Recent years have seen goalies Spencer Knight and Yaroslav Askarov be picked just outside the top 10 of the NHL Draft. In 2021, Swedish goalie Jesper Wallstedt hopes to become the first top-10 pick since Carey Price in 2005. Wallstedt has spent the season with Lulea HF in the SHL. Playing against men, he put up a 12-10-0 record, .908 save percentage, 2.23 goals-against average, and 2 shutouts in 22 games.

Wallstedt also played two games for Sweden at the World Juniors putting up an 0-1-0 record with a .923 save percentage, and 2.40 goals-against average. Wallstedt also helped Sweden to a bronze medal at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup with a .936 save percentage in three games.

Last season, Wallstedt had just one SHL game. Despite a .944 save percentage, he took the loss. He went 16-11-0, with a .923 save percentage and 2.53 goals-against average in 28 games in the Under-20 league. His older brother, Jacob Wallstedt, is another goalie who has played NCAA Hockey in Division as well as lower-level pro hockey in Sweden.

I’m of the mindset you can always find value goalies that become decent or better starters. Facing a scenario over 4 years where you need ELCs to perform and perform early, not a fan of using high picks on goalies.

Philosophically, not really in favor of 1st round goalies.

But, getting the 8th-11th ranked player at 20 is something, I guess.

Not going to pout over losing a 3rd and it would've been tougher to take if Lucius or Svechkov was picked behind Wallstedt.

Not a given we can hold onto Kahkonen after this season, so timing might be alright.

If he's good, he's good, and it'll be fine.

Not a fan. First round goalie bust rate is huge, they take forever to develop generally, and like half that do develop are on their second team before they do.

Take a goalie every year in the mid rounds and you'll have better luck finding a starter than a first round one.

Hope he proves me wrong.

Minnesota has been in the running for a goalie for a while; they wanted Askarov last season, but couldn't snag him.

Gotta take a gamble every once in a while. This could be a trade that we look back at and say, ‘it only cost us a 3rd’

Don't much care about the third, if your player is there, make the move.

Just don't like the philosophy of it.

Apparently he is the first swede goalie ever taken in first round. Kind of shocking to me
