TBN: Asplund, Pilut and Wilson sent to Rochester for All Star Break

Rasmus Asplund, Lawrence Pilut, Scott Wilson assigned to Rochester

All three were assigned to the Rochester Americans on Sunday, giving them an opportunity to play American Hockey League games during the Sabres' bye week and All-Star break. The Amerks play three games this week, beginning Wednesday night in Cleveland.

Makes perfect sense.

It'll be interesting to see if Asplund is recalled after the break. He hasn't been logging a ton of ice time, so I wonder if they leave him in rochester to get minutes and give someone a little more veteran the sparse minutes


And Pilut better be back.

I think they see him as their mid to long term 3rd pairing Left Defenseman. Someone that fits the system, has a well rounded skill set, and can move up the lineup to cover an injury for some time without a huge drop off. I do not think they see him as a top four high minute guy that can stand up to playoff level hockey. They have a logjam of decent defensemen on the Sabres until they make a trade or get to the offseason. From a numbers standpoint then either Joker or Pilut need to stay in the AHL. It wont be Joker, so I am betting Pilut stays down, until a trade or the deadline passes. They will keep him AHL playoff eligible.

Asplund should stay down as well. He got a taste of the NHL so that he knows what to work on. If the Sabres are not really in the hunt after the deadline then bring him up for a bit to get him ready for next year and back down to Rochester for the final few games and playoffs.
