Interesting news on the Coyotes. I don't really know how well connected Shannon is anymore.

Mereulo will not hand the team over. His casino license in AZ depends on owning the Coyotes. The league will have to do some work to get it out of his hands.

Friedman implying the Flames are a bit dysfunctional after the Muzzin puck flip in his 31 Thoughts podcast. If I remember right he said they had a meeting after the game and Tkachuk came away from it thinking some of the team wanted him to stop starting stuff every game. Friedman said Tkachuk is confused, because his game is all about causing chaos and getting his team involved.
Also said that Calgary is shopping a lot more than just Sam Bennett.

My prediction is that the Flames management probably backs Tkachuk's game over whoever wants him to change. He probably needs to start sticking up for himself more though, he can't be causing that chaos and then turtling behind the refs or teammates all the time. Teammates probably don't appreciate having to answer for Tkachuk's antics.

Friedman's take seemed to have a positive spin for Tkachuk though, I wonder what the other side would have to say.

I think Calgary might need to make a decision between trying to optimize this line-up vs. a full rebuild. They just don't seem to have a line-up that can challenge for a championship.

They've been pretty actively doing the move one piece, move in another piece dance for a few seasons now back to Dougie Hamilton, Hamonic, Hanifin, goalie dance. Personally think they need to look at GM and coach. The talent isn't there and the GM seems to spend more time feuding with agents than doing his job to develop his team.

Muzzin hurt, per Johnston

I heard he was day-to-day ... with a broken bone in his face!

Reminds of when Gregory Campbell broke his leg blocking that shot in the playoffs and still finished his shift

They're in a similar place as the 14-15 Jets with better goaltending in my opinion. I'm not sure they've ever been fully sold on their core though, there's been rumours of Gaudreau being shopped for years. I'd be surprised if they haven't put feelers out for trade value already in previous offseasons. Maybe this is what finally pushes them to take the best they can get and try again?

I don't necessarily think they'd commit to a full scorched Earth rebuild by selling off a young core player like Tkachuk, but the list of untouchables would only be 2-3 names. Young enough that the incoming draft picks wouldn't be separated too far in age.

You'd think that the only guys they wouldn't move are Tkachuk, Andersson and Markstrom. I think Giordano is probably not moving unless he asks to be as well. The funny thing is that if I'm rebuilding that team, I'm keeping Sam Bennett. He's the right age and has more to offer, I think, than he's been given the opportunity to show. Elias Lindholm is a good one too, but everyone else can go. Gaudreau and Monahan should have been traded last summer. But as a Jets fan, I hope they do nothing and mire in mediocrity forever.

You'd need to sell Bennett on more opportunities during a rebuild, but I don't think the effort has been lacking from him. I just don't view Bennett as untouchable because I don't think he's a good player.

It's tough to say who should stay and who should go though because we don't really know who in that room thinks Tkachuk needs to change his game. If it came down to it you trade anyone not named Tkachuk or Valimaki for the right price in my opinion. Markstrom sounds like he's more on Tkachuk's side in thinking that the Flames aren't playing hard enough. Friedman's speculation that he did those aggressive charging saves because of that.

And yeah, the Flames imploding creates a clear divide in the North division standings with Calgary, Vancouver, and Ottawa at the bottom. Good for the Oilers and Jets who seem to struggle to find consistency.

Or Tkachuk could chill out and realize that losing his mind over a puck flip is not something a team leader does...

It sounds like that was more the straw that broke the camel's back, not necessarily the sole cause. Probably an overreaction from both Tkachuk and whichever player(s) want him to tone his game down.

This drama combined with an existing appetite for change and management also (probably) siding with Tkachuk that other guys need to step up rather than him stepping down could mean there's change coming over there :dunno:

Or they settle their differences, come back and knock one of the current playoff teams in this division down and people forget about everything. They're probably going to have to change some things either way though.

It sounds like Jeff Skinner's going to be a healthy scratch tomorrow. The Sabres are a mess.
I wonder what's going on behind the scenes there, you don't just play a guy making 9 million a season on the 4th line and then healthy scratch them without some drama.

There's no need for drama. If the $750K player is better than Skinner then the $750k player plays. Skinner gets paid. It's not the Sabres fault he didn't live up to the expectations. So he is benched to the popcorn box in the sky and you look at the Sabres as a $72 million Cap team.

and we complain about our team... sometimes we need a reminder how solid Chevy and co are

Chevy came off as zen like to all the other GMs. I think it was from not answering his non-existent phone service when he's aboard his yacht at LotW all summer. "Why won't he make a deal with me"? was the old NHL cry. Now it's, "Why did I call him"?
