The NHL is a pyramid scheme
Change my mind
Make me.
Do you think the ads will be on the fan versions? I don't think so.
If they're not on
any of the jerseys available to fans (just on the stuff made for the players) then I'm at least open to the concept. To the shock of nobody, I'm sure, what I'd be okay with would be ridiculously limited and my asking price would be 10x what the teams are inevitably going to take for larger ads in more visible area. I absolutely expect jerseys with ads to be sold to fans as an inevitability, though. Even if the league won't sell them at first, there's going to be demand from fans who want 'the real thing' and the league simply won't be in a position to say no to a potential revenue source.
The only soccer jersey in my closet is a USWNT jersey. No ads. Beautiful. The Galaxy sash broken up by a pyramid scheme? I mean...if anything was going to make me change allegiances, it's having to see (and hear if you're at the games) Herbalife non-stop for 2 hours whenever they play. Problem there is LAFC is sponsored by YouTube so f*** them too, I guess. Most British teams seem to have online betting sites on theirs and I absolutely see a future of that in North America being the inevitable course taken. Teams sell their dignity for the cost of a bench player just to do
something to compete with the huge market/marketable teams that get the multinational sponsorships that destroy any hope of balance. The cap may prevent teams from gaining an unfair advantage in terms of what they can spend on their roster, but it's also going to raise the floor for the teams almost certainly making the least on their ads. When we're talking a difference of a couple thousand dollars the damage will be negligible, but when Toronto is inevitably selling their ad space for 10 times what the average team is...it's going to create inefficiencies. If you want super teams you want those inefficiencies. I vehemently despise super teams. Hell, the Chicago Bulls made me hate basketball as a child; I'm hardwired to root for the small guy. I've veered off into incoherent rant territory so I'm just gonna step back now. I just worry that a quick fix could easily snowball out of control down the road.
