Evgeni Malkin reportedly asked Penguins for trade if they planned to keep Phil Kessel

"Malkin declined to elaborate on how his on-ice relationship with Kessel fell apart. But it's clear he grew tired of feeling caught between the ongoing Sullivan-Kessel rift, according to multiple team and league sources. Those sources also say Malkin had come to believe Kessel was content with two titles and mostly interested in his statistics. Malkin was worried he'd be seen the same way if Kessel remained his winger.
Multiple team sources say Malkin requested a trade if Kessel was to return."

Mitch Marner and his helicopter father turned down an 11 million long term deal. So much for the boy next door who just loves Toronto image.

Report: Mitch Marner rejected Maple Leafs' $11M AAV offer

IDK what Dubas thought was going to happen here. Marner was very clearly the Leafs best player last season - yes better than Tavares and Matthews. Dubas pretty much let Matthews write his own contract - why would Marner take anything less? If I were him I wouldn't take less than 10.5 x5 - I guess maybe you chop off a million based on goals and Matthews having a better playoffs (although Marner was better last year). Why would he sign less than Matthews for 7 or 8 years? So he can watch Matthews sign for like 17 million in 5 years while he is still sitting pretty at 11?

Now to clarify - I don't think either Matthews or Marner are worth anything near what they got/have been offered but Dubas made his bed with Matthews (Tavares really) and now he has to lie in it.

It's just been a constant trend since signing Tavares. You gave Tavares 11, so now Matthews needed that. Then you went and gave Matthews 5 years. Now Marner wants a 5 year deal.

You look at Tampa and Boston. The top players took less and it continues with each next one. You look at Toronto and which core piece took a discount to help them? Now you expect one of your best players to take a worse deal than one you signed months ago? Good Luck.

Love watching the fan base call him greedy. Trading Marner would be a massive win for Boston.

Watching their mental gymnastics is unreal. When Nylander was holding out they were all calling him greedy and saying the Leafs didn't need him since he couldn't hold Marner's jockstrap. Then when the Matthews signing came out they were all pissed and didn't understand how Matthews could earn so much and he isn't even their best player - Marner is. Now Marner sucks, is greedy and can't hold Matthew's jockstrap and they don't need him because they have Nylander.

Lots of dough but 3 guys could get 100 points each

$11 million a year

How do you even afford that? Leafs are going to have to sell off everyone next summer and it'll be him, Tavares, Matthews, and 17 traffic cones. And their fans will still claim they're Stanley Cup Favorites

Marner is a martyr again in Toronto.

Toronto is now paying 4 players almost half of their overall cap space.

Will be interesting to see the Kessel dynamic develop here in AZ. It's pretty much all excitement right now.

$ 33 million for 3 players, not one of them a defenseman. That leaves what, $50 odd million for the other 17 guys??? And they still have no goaltender to speak of. Guess they plan to win 9-6 every time.
