I could actually see this being Babcock's way of trying to motivate Matthews to PK duty. I could also see it blowing up on him in spectacular fashion.

Fans in Toronto seem impatient with their team and coach. If they get outted in the first round again this year by ANYONE I expect there to be torches and pitchforks in the streets.
I daresay Babcocks job could be on the line depending on how this April goes.

Not a good quote from someone they are considering to be their next Captain.

Why would he be considered captain over JT or Marner who are both more deserving leaders and better players? Because he was #1 overall? Talented guy in the right spot as the 3rd best forward on the team not having to put that franchise on his back but come on.

I'm not defending Matthews, but if Babcock will throw something like that out, he sure could change the context of the conversation as well...

6/33 M
5.5 per

I’d offer that to JD right now

Deals I offer before end of camp:

JDB- 8 years 40 M
Krug- 4 years 30 M(I go to 32 but I don't give him 5 years just keep it to 4 and the doors open for him to go to Detroit as a UFA in 4 years he'll be young enough.)
Griz- 1 year 3 M keep him an RFA during expansion draft
Halak 2 years 5 M

And Carlo 3 years 9 mil. I shorten it to 2 years 6 mil and tell him he can get a new deal for more money next summer if he hits 20 points. One more good season from Brandon and he can get 5 per 8/40 if he shows some offense and keeps improving in the transition game.

Also send a suitcase full of cash to Backes place to convince him to retire instead of riding busses in the AHL.

JT is a quiet guy and from what I've heard Trona fans are not to keen on giving him the C.
Marner is young and has not shown any indication he should be wearing an A let alone a C.

Your right on the nose on Matthews I think. Fans pencilled him in on draft day as their new #1C who would lead the team to the promised land. Most fans have probably had him down for the C for years now.

I'd consider Muzzin or Reilly before those 3. But I dontactually know these guys so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd agree with those, except probably the Halak extension.

Not that I don't rate him or think we need him or that I'd expect Keyer or whomever to be ready for back-up duty after this year, but we might need that cap space elsewhere and I think it'd be foolish to extend a non-essential veteran at this stage. Goalies are a crapshoot and I do agree with the idea of holding on to a guy that is obviously working out for us ahead of taking a gamble in UFA, but at the end of this season when all the dominoes have fallen (at least the big ones in DeBrusk, Coyle, Krug, Gryz, Chara to an extent) we might be in a situation where we need a cheaper option behind Rask. Keep in mind, we don't even know if the salary cap goes up next year. Besides, Halak may be on a slippery slope himself so I find it unwise to tie up $2.5M for two more years in him at this time.

if you can get those deals... I like them all for the team. might have to pass on one of grez/krug just because it makes sense to go with the cheaper guys vaakanainen/lauzon

im a little iffy to lock into halak... another year older and not the most consistent goalie in his career... but extending him 1 year would be fine with me

definitely agree to your strategy with krug though... overpay some to keep the term down

you missed one guy I want to bring back... coyle, but I think we are better off letting him get to ufa next year. I do think the cap will flatline since the players are so dead set against escrow. a stagnet cap is going to be nightmare for the teams to deal with and middle teir players like coyle are very likely going to get hammered.

I would say gardner fell victim to this, this year as the gossip started to reach the gm years... the vets who arent first liners are likely the guys going to get sacrificed... the hotshot kids will continue to get paid but their deals look to be leveling out some with smart gms… and then the premium first line vets will still be top of the feed list

is krug anyones idea of a top line guy? or is he going to be viewed as a middle pair pp specialist?

if jake gardiner got less than 5 will krug actually come in around 5 again himself? honestly I want to keep him... and want to keep coyle too. I was so worried that idiot kevin hayes deal set the market for coyle but maybe sanity will prevail and we will be able to keep everyone we wanted

Rask stated multiple times that the reduced workload was essential for his playing in the Playoffs. I happily pay a great backup that can take some of the burden of Rask 2.5-3 millions before taking a gamble on the Gustavssons, Svedbergs, Johnsons for 1-1.5 million a season. If Halak should be the one is another question. Think you should cut some costs elsewhere if you have squeeze under the cap.

Tremendous pass from Marner on that last goal. Put it right on Tristan Scherwey's stick all alone in the slot.

Only issue is that Tristan Scherwey plays for Ottawa.
. Nice I love it. Leafs for cup.................. of Tim Horton’s
