I think the Bruins were willing to take the risk of trading away an underperforming (at least compared to the prior season) player for the sake of dumping a contract and bringing a hopefully productive player in.

Was there a possibility in DS’s and the front office’s mind that they may get the better player in Hayes? I think so. Now, I admittedly didn’t watch Hayes really at all prior to him arriving in Boston, but given the fact that Reilly Smith had come out of nowhere and then regressed, the idea of Hayes being at least a comparable option wasn’t all that bad. If I recall correctly, Smith had an unreal first half of his first season in Boston and then had floated somewhat into the background for the remainder of his Boston stay. He proved he could be productive, but there was also a very real possibility he was going to be a half year wonder.

Overall, the Bruins still solved at least one of their issues with the trade, but they obviously got fleeced on Hayes/Smith straight swap. If we had held onto Smith and still retained Savard’s contract, there would have been an added 4.9 million to deal with on the cap plus the exposure issue in the expansion draft (the place where FLA lost Smith).

There are a lot of moving pieces and factors within that deal. And while it’s easy to say “hey we could have solved our problems last year if we hadn’t traded Smith”, there’s too many other things to weigh that would have therefore played out differently to really make that an honest statement.

The Rangers could be a really fun team this season. Not a lot of defense to speak off, but a really energetic, talented bunch of young forwards with some pace and flair who could cause a lot of teams some headaches. They'll face much sterner defensive challenges than the Jets, but I'm interested to see how they fare over the stretch.

I love that it took Milan Lucic like half a game in a Flames uniform to suckerpunch someone.

I miss him so much. I hope he has a rebirth out in Calgary and his on-the-edge style of play works for them (as long as they don't play the Bruins)

It’s time for the NHL Board of Governors to step in and make Melnyk sell.

That could have been said many times over the past few years, but the latest incident has to be the final one. Melnyk went to Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut in 2017 and claims he was winning so big that the casino wouldn’t cash out his chips. They “induced [the] defendant to continue to gamble,” according to his legal defense. Yup, his defense is the casino made him keep gambling. If that was a legit defense, the casino would be broke.

I’m with you.

I’m obviously in the dark ages. McKenzie was on TSN talking about whether Looch should get suspended!! I’m lost.

Yes it was a bit of a sucker punch but the guy rammed a player into boards and was NOT going to answer the bell. Lucic punch, to me, was not terribly out of line. Certainly not supplemental discipline out of line.

I’d be quite happy with that response if the guy had boarded Krejci and didn’t think he had to answer. Particularly in game one. Set the tone!
