I think this team’s biggest mistake was not taking the 4 1sts for Vanek. They weren’t going to be good again and that was an instant rebuild we threw away. But given what had just happened losing the co captains, not sure anyone would’ve survived that ordeal.

Marner drives the play though. He’s worth it as long as you believe his addition is going to prevent you from getting a top-10 pick.

I would hate to see Toronto get a whole bunch of 1sts though. Their team is in worse shape if they try to keep him. They knew all along they’d rather have Tavares than Marner/Nylander. I’m surprised they just didn’t trade Nylander and keep Marner happy. Instead they are going to burn some bridges and ruin their locker room.

I am expecting them to sign Marner and then trade Nylander after all the talk that came out over the past 24 hours like this:

Question for the CAP specialists out there....

How do teams leverage LTIR like Detroit? Does the NHL follow up with doctors or the players to test if they really cannot play in the NHL anymore? It just seems like a backdoor move to create CAP space by having players "retire". This is not to suggest all players that have this status are "faking" or are not dealing with a crippling injury...but in some cases I do wonder what the process is to determine if they are LTIR eligible or not.

If the player was able to play and wasn't showing up, the team would move to void the contract ala Berglund.

If the player was healthy enough, but overpaid, they would show up and collect their paycheck. Exhibit A: Matt Moulson.

I think that's typically how it works, but I remember there being some issues with Lupul a few years back. They said he wasn't physically able to play and he claimed he was, of course nothing ever came of it.

If I recall correctly the league had a 3rd party look at him and determined his LTIR was acceptable. Obviously if you believe in Robidas island, this won't make much difference.

One article on it.

I believe they did the same with Hossa, and probably other players as well.

Yeah there's a little too much smoke with some of these situations for there not to be fire. The Lupul one just stuck with me because he seemed like he was going to fight it, but I'm sure people got to him and told him it wasn't a fight worth taking on. I'm also sure teams pressure these doctors to exaggerate medical issues to their benefit. I find it hard to believe a guy has to retire because of a skin allergy.

Yeah, Lupul was healthy enough to be snowboarding while on IR so that one definitely seemed super sketchy to me. Next day he totally changes his story and says he can't play and was just kidding around, one wonders what the leafs threatened/ promised him to flip his story like that.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Tom Wilson is pretty popular in the Caps locker room.

Cole has that coming for cheap hits just about every game. Just so happens the Caps have someone to actually address the problem
