So? That doesn't mean he should be given a max contract. Nobody really deserves that, and even so there are a few players I would give a max contract to before Toews.

i agree with what you're saying

but IF salaries are going up, in 2019-2020 10.8 million will not be out of the realm of normal

Kings are going to own the Western Conference and the NHL when Kane and Toews new contracts kick in.

Sure as **** can't expect any team from the EC to stop them.

All of their best players are locked up long term, with the exception of Kopitar.

They are set up to be strong contenders for the next five years.

Careful, now. That's how upsets start.

kings are set pretty well for next couple of years but there are things that could go wrong for them, thus making their window little shorter, or not at least as good position as they seem to be now for couple of years.

People are overestimating the Kane/Toews/Saad deals impact on Hawks going forward

The Hawks also have a very good prospect pool that will start getting NHL chances in coming years

Reminds me of 2010 + 2011 when Hawks were on decline and done contending because of all the cap purges according to HF. People were wrong then and will be wrong again IMO

Seriously the organization already has dealt with cap purges 3 different summers and survived. They will survive 2015 as well

2010
Traded Ladd + Byfuglien + Versteeg and lost Niemi via arbitration due to cap

2011
Traded Campbell + Brouwer due to cap

2013
Traded Bolland + Frolik due to cap

well it depends how much they end up being, no?

if they can't get the duo much under 11 mil.

bowman has been very patient, not trading lot of picks for rentals or useless/bad players (though some might turn out like that, like rundblad).

so i think hawks can swallow the losses of sharp/oduya. but they obviously would be in better shape than keeping them.

could bowman really go for it next year if kane and toews get really big contracts?

you guys could really use ladd, though. it also took while to recover from loss of soupy and his puck moving abilities.

I would only call one a "purge."

Besides, it was easier to cycle in guys because you weren't paying your two top stars 21 million. Won't be as easy, now.

Really not a big deal IMO. Two of the best and most successful players in the league deserve that kind of money. Being way overblown IMO.

It is fair.

It's still going to be a pain in the ass to try and build around though.

Chicago had to pay them. Trying to get them to a discount at this point would be an insult. Although for cup rivals around the league, this is good news because most teams have their stars locked in at 7-8M already, which basically allows for another 5M impact player. At least in the short term. Obviously other teams will deal out 9M+ cap hits soon enough.

Has to be a good feeling for Kopitar knowing he's 2 years away from an 80 million dollar payday.
