Here's our CapFriendly situation IF Marner made $4M less:

Fall 2019 Marner -4 - Copy.jpg
Again, that isn't how LTIR works. It isn't a pool of ununsed cap space to use. To get the full $13.6 million LTIR benefit, they need to be exactly at the cap ceiling on opening day.

If they are $4 million under the cap when the season starts like in your example, they will lose $4 million of LTIR benefit.

Ask Cap friendly directly.

Here is how cap relief is calculated.

Exceed value = ACSL + salary relief pool - league upper limit.

Now Marner at 6.9 million

Exceed value based on example shown = 77.4 (cap hit) + 13.6 - 81.5
= 9.5 million exceed value

They would be allowed to exceed the cap by $9.5 million, not $13.6 million.

There goes the mythical $4.1 cap space. It doesn't exist.

Having said that, they could have tried to get players which total that to add to the team, but it would have had to happen in preseason, which teams don't generally do.

At the end of the day, it's a moot point. There was no way that Marner is worth less than $9.5 million on his term.

You do understand that I used the cap calculator tool from the CapFriendly website?

Maybe Edmonton Oilers sold their soul to Old Nick for that other worldly team of superstars in the 1980's and these last two decades of teasing and pain are just the beginning of their eternal price for the 1980's dynasty. But what did Connor McDavid do to deserve this fate?

Nobody demanded that he signed an 8 year contract with them.

Where do you see that?

I think it will likely be Bo.

If you're referring to this tweet:

I doubt they go with a C and 4 alternates. One of the 4 will be the C.

They highlighted the As. It's definitely going to be EP.
