As a specific single player note, Hitchcock trusting Jesse Puljujarvi to be on the ice for the last minute of [the previous] game seems to be made a big thing by the commentators. Looks like he's bent to dig up the Laine, Aho type of guy out of him. Working on his PK to make him a "top class third liner" for starters and see it from there.
The "buy low" window for JP may be closing.
There was a sound byte of Hitchcock out yesterday where he was really pumping poolparty’s tires saying he’s noticed great detail in his game and has been working hard to make him a pk’er which will bring his minutes up. Watching the game it was clear the player is buying in, which is great.
He is as gangly and awkward looking as the day is long. He may be a top six guy with the work ethic and size but I don’t see a first liner in there. Struggling to see a scoring second liner but who knows, he still has time.
He’s obviously good friends with Rantanen. They were both on the ice late in warmups and looked across the ice at each other for a nod, and Rantanen lofted a puck towards him that he deflected in his net, then they both separately left the ice without saying anything. Game faces. It was a cute bruh moment.
Sam Girard is Krug at his best with a pulp fiction style adrenaline shot to the chest applied with a stabbing downward motion. If that guy can find a way to put more oomph in his shot he’s an all star. Defining the smaller dman role of unlimited escapability in the face of high tempo forechecking and starting or leading the play out of the zone. Picks good times to pinch and is very deceptive and poised with the puck. Great one timer release even, just not quite enough on it to beat guys yet. Really fun to watch.
Mcdavid is just playing a different game. He’s so explosive his moves aren’t complicated he just makes you choose a direction and goes the other way once you choose. They need another big talent to play with him. Drai looks like he is regressing and is becoming the guy he’s accused to be on the main boards sometimes, completely dependent on Mcdavid. I’ve seen enough highlights to believe otherwise but last night the second he got the puck his eyes went straight for Mcdavid no matter where he was. He deferred to him constantly. They all do except maybe Nuge, who’s got a nasty release to his snap shot.
Fun game to watch. 29 and 96 are amazing in person too. 29 plays so fast it’s hard to believe his hands keep up with his feet, but they do. 96 is on fire. Every pass on target, every shot at a good place on net, sees the play ahead of everyone. He’s about to get paid. That pick turned out amazing.
