I always thought Ben Hutton rubbed people in the organization the wrong way. He started his career as a bit of a joker, didn't at least appear to take it all seriously. Of course, last off season he started training with Giroux and his fitness levels improved considerably. I would argue his play improved by a mile as well, but that doesn't mean he became more than a replaceable level player. I think there's a place for a guy like Hutton in the league, but not on this team that needed to make a few sweeping changes. He'd be a great depth piece on a contender, if he continues working as he had.

Deal doesn't even start until next year so they'll probably get a 50+ point season from him for his last ELC year ($1.22MM with bonuses).

Senators with a very shrewd long-term bet.
Oh damn, thats even better. And chabot isnt just a one trick pp specialist

17. Did Tyson Barrie think — on draft night — that he was getting traded to Vancouver?
“I did,” he said on a podcast taping. “I think everyone thought it was close to happening, and I’d heard that it was. It didn’t happen, so I thought maybe I was sticking around in Colorado…. Clearly not.”
He was laughing as he said the last part.

From 31 Thoughts.

Sounds like how they handled an immature (at the time) McCann. In the case of Hutton, they'll not likely end up losing much. In the case of McCann, they threw away a decent asset (made worse they traded him for significant negative value).

If that’s the case I don’t get why Jake is still on this team then. He’s probably the most immature player we’ve had on this team since Shane O’Brien. Only reason I can think of is because he was Jimbos first pick in the era of “change is coming”. Pretty shitty reason.

To be fair, that's not unlike how other GMs would react. They *seem* to give a longer leash to those they themselves had a hand in acquiring.

Were there any confirmed reports on what the offer/sticking point was?

Didn't see anything but I would think it would revolve around a 1st round pick (perhaps if a certain player wasn't available at 10) or a willingness have a contract extension in place beforehand.

It’s a bet. Ristolainen hasn’t developed the way he was expected in buffalo after his contract. Ekblad has stalled as well. ANd wennberg upfront hasn’t panned out yet.

If he were to have signed something similar to Provorov then in year 7&8 to make up the difference he needs a deal worth $11.75 per. That’s 7 years away.

Right now he’s tied for getting the 5th highest cap hit for a Dman. Behind UFA of EK at $11.5, Doughty at $11, (RFA) Subban at $9, and OEL at $8.25. Tied with Burns and Carlson at $8 mill.
With Jossi and Pietroangelo expected to pass him next season. So he’ll drop down to 7th highest.

Thought he could push for more as the agent could play the OS card given Melnyks financial situation and that teams would do the Aho thing and front load a SB heavy contract offer to test Melnyk. Could see the same $8.5 per over 5 year offer.

But this does take Chabot to age 31. But we just saw Spurgeon who turns 30 in Nov sign for 7 years at $7.5 per.

If you’re confident in him then it’s a solid gamble.

Alex Biega can't crack the Canucks roster and h'e probably a #2 in Winnipeg.

Would be surprised if one of Ehlers/Connor aren't dealt for a dman within the next month. That defense is horrendous.

As I said, their GM is a moron for at least signing Hutton as a sort of bandaid.

Once more Jim Benning moves up my rankings of NHL GMs without doing anything.;)

it is a little weird that they were counting on buff given his age and injury history. maybe the worst case scenario we are seeing is a surprise, but buff out for a big chunk of the season one way or another is not.

If anyone it should be Laine

I agree. Tough to fit in that salary elsewhere at this stage though, assuming he holds out until getting close to $10mil. Likely easier to find a fit with Ehlers at $6mil or Connor at similar money.

Gonna be interesting to see how things play out in Winnipeg. Cheveldayoff is just so patient and risk adverse that you can't help but wonder if he will sit on his hands too long and sink the Jets season. It's time for a couple bold moves in Winnipeg, not sure Kevin has it in him.

Jets still have a murder's row of talent up front. But man are they on a shaky foundation with that back end and goaltending.
