They've been playing for Kazakstan quite a bit more than a year. Last 3-4 or so. And from the people I know that grew up with Dawes and Boyd, there is zero regret. They love it absolutely in Astana and are proud to play for Kazakstan.

I believe the term is "for make benefit glorious nation of Kazakhstan".

Zbin signed for over 5 million. Ehlers is going to cost 6 million plus.

Agreed Ehlers is better, but not an exact comparison as Zibanejad is coming off a bridge deal while Ehlers will be coming off his ELC. I long term deal for Ehlers will buy more RFA years bringing down total cost.

Habs going full meltdown

Yeah I have no idea who's going to move the puck on theor back end. It's almost like their strategy is to build a defensive wall around price with all the big bruising dmen they are getting.

They will seriously regret trading Sergachev. Possibly as early as this coming season. Drouin is a great playmaker but I see some serious game in Sergachev.

Habs meltdown

Kinda similar to the Chris Chelios - Denis Savard swap years ago. Savard was beginning to decline, a great player who relied on speed. Chelios, a great defender had year to hit his peak and played extremely well for years. Although Drouin is much younger than Savard was at the time, I think Sergachev will be around and an elite player much longer than Drouin.

The odd thing is after goaltending the Habs strongest position is LW with Patches and Gally? I like Droiin but their two biggest needs were defenseman and a centre so you blow off your best young prospect/asset to aquire another skilled left winger????

Who is playing centre this season? The D core looks a bit scary too?

I guess MB just couldn't resist going after Drouin but it was a a bad move. He's done things he shouldn't have or didn't need to do but the big needs have been neglected. I think they are going to miss Markov and Radulov. I don't know if Price can continue to carry them into the playoffs.

This is sad. Losing Radulov was pretty bad in itself now we're out Markov.
To win games Price will have to go in beast mode

Be interesting to see how much lockout protection is included. Could be a template for a Trouba deal.

I would imagine a Trouba deal to look similiar but the market for number 1 centers in same poaition as Johansen is higher than dmen.

Man did we get a bargain with Scheif. He must be somewhat ticked that he's making 15 million less than a guy like RyJo.

15 million is an overstatement:

Scheifele: ELC -> 8 x $6.125M
age 20-23 ELC
age 23-27 (4 RFA years) and 27-31 (4 UFA years) $49M (= 8 x $6.125M)
hits UFA at age 31

Johansen: ELC -> 3 x $4M -> 8 x $8M
age 19-22 ELC
age 22-26 (4 RFA years) and 26-30 (4 UFA years) $52M (= 3 x $4M + 5 x $8M)
age 30-33: 3 x $8M = $24M guaranteed
hits UFA at age 33

So, essentially, Johansen only makes $3M more than Scheifele in the timespan of Scheifele's current contract, then he will be guaranteed $24M over the first 3 years of what would be Scheifele's next contract. He also had the advantage of making the league in his Draft+1, so he's a year younger in comparable years.

(and this is why you don't bridge good players)

Well this is the reason that Overherdt is popular with some players. While he is extreme and tends to cause issues between his clients and team management he gets excellent monetary results for his clients.

Poile is not to blame for that deal being a bit bloated. As many, including myself, have stated in previous threads, it wasn't a matter of if, but when Johansen and Overhardt would rip the Preds apart. They truly were in the power position regarding the negotiations - one year till UFA, undeniable 1C on a team with nothing after him down the middle, coming off a horrifying bridge deal with a high qualifying offer and strong playoff performance to end the season. If anything, Poile did well to get Johansen locked up for eight years - realistically, there's no way of avoiding overpaying him, so you might aswell save yourself from the trouble of negotiating again any sooner than you have to. He'll also spend the majority of his prime with the Preds, which is a plus as well.

Interesting no?

Yeah - you don't see many big deals like that these days.

I posted these cap-adjusted comparisons on the main trade board so people can get a handle on how this looks next to some other forwards who signed big deals in the Cap era:

Vanek @ $7.15M in 2007-08 - equivalent to $10.5M AAV in 2017-18.
Thornton @ $7.2M in 2008-09 - equivalent to $9.5M AAV in 2017-18.
Kopitar @ $6.8M in 2009-10 - equivalent to $9M AAV in 2017-18.
Marleau @ $6.9 in 2010-11 - equivalent to $8.75M AAV in 2017-18.
Koivu @ $6.75M in 2011-12 - equivalent to $8M AAV in 2017-18.
Toews @ $6.3M in 2010-11 - equivalent to $8M AAV in 2017-18.
Jordan Staal & Taylor Hall @ $6M in 2013-14 - equivalent to $7M AAV in 2017-18.

So Johansen lines up financially with Koivu's $6.75M deal and Toews first post-ELC contract.

It seems to me it was very important to Overhardt that the AAV was at least $8M. If he's willing to give up lockout protection for the same deal for Trouba next summer then there could be hope.

Yup

I think that part is telling and good for Poile to keep all the options open. He is that big talented #1 centre so they have to pay him, but there is something about RyJo that makes me feel uneasy. I know the Nashville fans I was sitting around loved Forsberg but thought RyJo was a bit lazy. One thing for sure though is right now he is a valuable piece for them precieved warts and all so full props to Poile for getting the deal done.

So there's a main board thread in the polls asking if Scheifele is a franchise center or not. Mostly it's a unanimous yes with a few maybes. But the no's are almost strictly coming from a certain fan base. Now that's a shocker! Lol

I don't know how much of it is owner meddling so I am going to lay the blame on both Dorion-Melnyk. Dorion-Melnyk is one of the worst GM-Owner combos in the league. Just a straight up disaster. Zib trade looks even worse now

Without even looking my guess is that other fan base is the Laughs?
