Why? Were they just trying to keep their monopoly on being the only team in town?
Even then, moving forward -- they allowed the Crew to use Ohio Stadium as their home field for three seasons before renovations made it impossible. I don't see what the hangup would be about allowing the Jackets to use the stadium one time. It would be money in their pocket. What's the problem?
From what I remember, there was talk in the city in the mid-90s of building a new, professional arena that sat 18,000+. The city could support one, but probably not two - sporting events, concerts, etc. I don't remember the specifics, but OSU wasn't exactly the most forthright in their proposal or something like that.

6 NHL franchises have not played in an outdoor regular season game and freaking CAROLINA is getting selected for next season. Absurd.

Exclusive: Former Wild coach Bruce Boudreau opens up about...

Nice piece on Boudreau firing.

They broke down video, came up with a practice plan, pre-scouted the San Jose Sharks and decided on a lineup for Saturday’s game before Boudreau left the coach’s room to return to his office. It was 9:30 a.m.
“It was funny because Bill came in and he shut the door, and as soon as he shut the door, I knew,” Boudreau said. “You just know, right? And he says, ‘I’m going to make a change,’ and I instantly said, ‘Are you firing me?!’ — just like that.
“And he goes, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Are you f***ing kidding me?’”
Guerin said it was something he was thinking about for awhile and began to praise Boudreau for the type of coach and person he was, but Boudreau was in no mood to hear any of that. Boudreau uttered a few choice words and walked out of the room.

No, I think that's a good thing. They're recognizing that they need to spread these things around, and not have the same five or six teams get them all. And since they're not going to have all six of those franchises involved in the same season, I don't see a problem here.

I think we'll get there. Soon.

OH... and with regard to Stadium Series games... I wonder if Arizona could host one of these things in the stadium the Cardinals play in. No one ever said it had to be an outdoor stadium.

Sheesh. The injury bug here is getting so bad even ex-Jackets are being hit by it.
I've always had a soft spot for the Avs as a Western Conference team, so I'll point out that Rantanen is our for "weeks" too.

It's fine, almost assured it's going to be the Pens in Carolina. Just wanting the Jackets to finally get one. They're going out of style, fast. Used to be cool/novel, but of course, the league sucks at this.

Cue up the "we made a mistake trading him" train

Markus was a real nice guy. A lot of people in Cleveland really liked him. Unfortunately he didn't make the most of his chances. Sad he's gone, but it wasn't working here.

Letter from the editor: Our favorite stories as The Athletic...

As The Athletic Cleveland celebrates its third anniversary this week, I have plenty of stories like that about our formative years. Instead, now seems like the perfect time to let our terrific storytellers tell their best stories. I asked all of our writers and editors on staff to select their favorite piece or two from their time at The Athletic and then explain what makes them so special. Below are the 20 selected pieces, most of which are free and unlocked this week for non-subscribers to get a taste of what they’ve been missing

Just thought I'd post this link to 20 free stories including the piece by Portzine about Jarmo-which I think is his best writing that I've ever read.

The journey to understand Jarmo Kekalainen begins in Finland...

Kole's brother is on waivers today.

Porty has a theory about why:

I say we put in a claim and rescue him from the cheapskates.

The Stars and Ducks now have tried sending players to the AHL (presumably to save, what, $100k tops?) since the NHL and AHL suspended their seasons.

The NHL needed to put in a roster freeze. What a joke.

Pretty shitty move. Some are going to argue that players are still better off than service industry workers and yeah of course. It's just an issue of fairness, in context.

I'm bored. Who wants to take a shot at this?

Puck Soup released an episode this week about building a cap compliant team with players who are 30+ years old. The rules were that the players had to be over 29 right now and the contract, if signed in the players 20s, extend so that more than 50% of the contract into the 30s. Their team is...kind of not good?

Marchand-Crosby-Bergeron
Giroux-Stamkos-Jumbo Joe
Alex Killorn-Eric Staal-Kovalchuk
Pat Maroon-Spezza-Justin Williams
Giordano-Chara
Keith-Shattenkirk
Nick Holden-Alec Martinez
Bishop
Khudobin
Scratches: Tyler Ennis, Matt Irwin, Alex Stalock

Who wants to take a crack at building a better 30+ year old roster?

Who wants to take a crack at building a better 30+ year old roster?

Marchand (6.125) – Crosby (8.7) – Kane (10.5)
Nyquist (5.5) – Stamkos (8.5) – Perron (4)
Kovalchuk (0.7) – E. Staal (3.25) – Williams (0.7)
Maroon (0.9) – Eller (3.5) – Calvert (2.85)
Giordano (6.75) – Petry (5.5)
Hainsey (3.5) – Shattenkirk (1.75)
Holden (2.2) – Borowiecki (1.2)
Khudobin (2.5)
Stalock (.785)
Scratches: Spezza (0.7), Marleau (0.7), Irwin (0.675)
Total cap hit: $81.485m
Cap room: $15,000

A little CBJ-bias including Nyquist, but I think he's a good middle 6 winger and his cap hit isn't terrible. It's really hard to find much on D. There are A LOT of bad contracts of 30+ year old blue liners (Burns, Doughty, etc.). Went for a little bit of high end with Kane at 10.5 and then filled in with depth after that. Could have maybe had better goaltending, but Khudobin has the best save % in the league of any goalie with 15+ starts this season and Stalock has nearly identical #s to Korpisalo.
