You be the GM. You have to work with the Jets contracts, deciding who stays, who leaves, and most importantly, what will the Jets total cap hit be? If you have time, make your own projections. No criticism, no comments. Just try to be the GM.

My effort at assembling the 2018-19 Jets payroll

Scheifele 6,125,000
Ehlers 6,000,000
Wheeler 5,600,000
Little 5,291,666
Perreault 4,125,000
Lowry 2,500,000
Armia 1,500,000
Tanev 1,250,000

Copp 1,000,000
Connor 925,000* (6,000,000 starting 2019)
Laine 925,000* (8,000,000 starting 2019)
Vesalainen 925,000* ELC

Roslovic 894,000* ELC
Lemieux 863,333* ELC
Appleton 741,667* ELC

TOTAL 37,540,666

Byfuglien 7,600,000
Trouba 7,000,000
Morrissey 5,500,000

Kulikov 4,333,333
Poolman 1,500,000
Chiarot 1,400,000
UFA RHD Signing 800,000
Niku 775,000* ELC
*Stuart buyout 583,333

TOTAL 29,491,000

Hellebuyck 5,500,000
Mason 4,100,000
Comrie 800,000* (2 year contract)

TOTAL: 10,400,000

Winnipeg Jets 2018-19 Payroll: $77,306,666

Released/traded/etc:

Enstrom 5,700,000
Myers 5,500,000
Matthias 2,125,000
Hutchinson 1,150,000
Dano 925,000
Hendricks 700,000
Morrow 650,000

*Mason is the big question mark. Not sure if any team would pick him up at his salary. May have to keep him, since buying him out then acquiring a backup goalie for $1,000,000+ makes little sense.

Myers missing?

Yes, he was. Corrected it.

We have to try and deal Myers if and when Trouba is signed. No way we have cap room for 3 RHD to each be making over $5,000,000. Myers performance this year was better than last, and he did have a good playoff round. Best advice would be to sell high.

As for Perrreault. We either trade him, give up or someone else. Again, we do not have the cap room to keep him. Unless we want to trade away Wheeler, Connor, Laine, or Ehlers.

I would go:

Connor - 925K + 850K in bonus = $1,775,000
Scheif - $6,125,000
Wheeler - $5,600,000
Ehlers - $6,000,000
Stasney - 1 by $6,000,000 - one more shot at a cup, a full year with Ehlers and Laine and PP1 time means his counting stats will again be high going into UFA again.
Laine - $925,000 + $2,650,000 in bonus = $3,575,000
Perrault - $4,125,000
Roslovic - $894,116 + $212,500 in bonus = $1,106,616
Little - $5,261,666
Copp - $1,000,000
Lowry - $2,500,000
Tanev - $1,000,000
Armia - $1,500,000

Trade Dano & Petan

Trouba - 6 by $6,000,000
Morrissey - 6 by $5,000,000
Buff - $7,600,000
Niku - $775,000 + $182,500 in bonus = $957,500
Poolman - $1,000,000
Kulikov - $4,333,333
Chiarot - $1,400,000
Morrow - $1,000,000

Myers traded

Helle - 1 by $3,500,000 - another show me deal. Same amount as Vasielvski ($3.5) and Gibson ($3.3 in cash. $2.3 in hit)
Mason - $4,100,000

Total of $79,559,115 with bonus money in.

Hopefully package Myers, Petan and Dano to the Oilers for 10th overall at the draft and pick up a RHD to replace Buff down the road.

The following year Helle needs a big time deal but essentially Mason's money goes to him and having Comrie at $1,000,000 NHL deal as the backup. (only pick up about $600,000).
Stasney walks ($6,000,000 savings) and is replaced by Vesalainen at $1,100,000 including bonus money for $4.9 million in savings.

Essentially all this money goes to Laine ($8,400,000). Connor has to eat a bridge deal at $4.5, which is a $2,725,000 increase. If the cap rises by another $5,000,000 next year that leaves $2,275,000 to give Copp and Wheeler modest raises.

I think 2018 looks very much like this season, except Roslovic makes the big club and Enstrom is replaced at LD by Morrow or maybe Poolman.

Connor-Scheifele-Laine
Ehlers-Little-Wheeler
Perreault-Roslovic-Armia
Copp-Lowry-Tanev

Morrissey-Trouba
Morrow-Buff
Kulikov-Myers

Hellebuyck / Mason

PB - Petan, Lemieux, Chiarot

That would not surprise me, but I'm thinking it's Morrow who is in the press box, and that they try to trade Petan.

Reading about the Bombers brings things nicely back to Earth. Just signed a free agent former player of the year for 170 grand for 1 year. Meanwhile we're debating whether a 20 year old Laine would possibly take less than 9 fkn million dollars a year for 8 fkn years. Crazy.

This is what I would do, not all of this I actually expect will happen:

Draft:
  • Trade Perrault and Lemieux (Chirelli type) to Edmonton at the draft for the 10th overall and Bensen.
  • Draft Noah Dobson with the 10th pick (RD to replace Buff in 3 years)
  • Trade Chariot for a 3rd or 4th round pick
  • Trade Dano for a 3rd round pick (He deserves to play, the org should do the right thing here)
Signings:
  • Sign Morrissey to a 7 year contract worth an AAV of $5.25 million
  • Sign Trouba to a 5 year contract with an AAV of $6.5 million
  • Sign Helle to a 5 year contract with an AAV of $5.25 million
  • Sign Armia to a 3 year deal with an an AAV of $2 million
  • Sign Lowry to a 4 year deal with an AAV of $3 million
  • Sign Laine to an 8 year deal with an AAV of $8.5 million
  • Sign Tanev to a 2 year deal with an AAC of $1 million
  • Sign Morrow to a 1 year deal worth $1 million
  • Sign Poolman to a 2 year deal with an AAV of $1 million

The Edmonton trade is unrealistic. Other two are ok.

Morrissey, Trouba, Armia and Laine deals are all serious hometown discounts which I don't think we can bank on.

Hellebyuck 7.5 mill, Laine 4.5, max 5 mill.
I think you have these backwards. Loved Helly's step forward this year, but he hasn't put himself in a spot to have the 3rd highest cap hit among all goalies, especially still being an RFA. More likely a 3-4 year deal at around $4.5 M. At that point if he has put together a string of years where he is among the best in the league and can hit the open market, you pay him top dollar.

For Laine, if the Jets low balled him like that someone would offer sheet him and we would then pay through the nose or lose him.

If i'm Vezina candidate Helly or Helly's agent , no way i'm signing anything under 5 million a season , as much as i would like him to sign as cheap as possible , i don't see it happening .

Agreed but there is a little bit more revenue involved with the NHL compared to the Comedy Football League .

I don't believe any of those deals to be home town discounts.

In the Trouba thread I showed that similar players coming off their bridge deals got a max of 8% of the cap. That puts Trouba at 6.4 million based on an 80 million cap. So I gave him top of market value. If he wants more his agent doesn't have much of an argument.

Go look up the comps for Morrissey:

Hamilton 5.8 x 6 (7.9%)
Parayko 5.5 x 6 (7.3)
Slavin 5.3 × 7 (7.1%)
Reilly 5 ×6 (7.0%)
Matheson 4.9 × 8 (6.5%)
Jones 5.4 × 6 (7.4%)
Lindholm 5.2 × 6 (7.2%)
Pesche 4.0 × 6 (5.4 %)
Klefbom 4.2 X 7 (5.2%)
Larsson 4.2 x 6 (5.8%)

Gives us an average cap hit % of 6.7 which would put his AAV around 5.36 million so a slight discount but he also hasn't produced near the same offense as the top players on that list so I deem the 5.25 million to be fair.

I've worked over tons of different scenarios on Cap Friendly's arm chair GM feature.

There really isn't one where keeping Stastny long term works out to well for us. It also may be a bit premature to move Perreault.

My best case scenario was this.

Salary Cap is $80,000,000

Trades
Tyler Myers to Toronto for 25th overall + Andrew Nielsen
-Big savings on the cap and gets us back into the 1st round of the draft. Nielsen is a bit of a long shot but gives us someone on the Moose depth chart.

Buyout
Steve Mason - will cost us $1,366,667 for 18/19 and 19/20. Saves us $2,733,333 in the short term. Costs us the original amount in the following year but we can handle that.

Signings
Jacob Trouba - $6,500,000 x 8 years - Modified NTC (14 team no trade list)
- long term deal locked up as our 1RD for the next 8 years.

Josh Morrissey - $4,500,000 x 3 years
-bridge contract takes him to one year before UFA. Gives us some short term saving but could bite us down the road

Connor Hellebuyck - $6,000,000 x 7 years Modified NTC (10 team no trade list)
-After a Vezina calibre season Helle will be looking to get paid. We'd be wise to get him at 7 or more.

Anton Khudobin - $1,750,000 x 1 years
- Khudobin had a really solid season as a back up, has proven he can be an NHL backup and can be had for cheap. Give him a year and see how it plays out.

Adam Lowry - $2,500,000 x 4 years
Joel Armia - $1,125,000 x 2 years
Eric Comrie - $950,000 x 2 years
Kristian Vesalainen - $950,000 x 3 years (ELC)
Marko Dano - $892,500 x 1 year (QO)
Nic Petan - $874,125 x 1 year (QO)
Tuck Poolman - $874,125 x 1 year (QO)
Skyler McKenzie - $850,000 x 3 years (ELC)
Jordan Stallard - $850,000 x 3 years (ELC)
J.C Lipon - $715,000 x 1 year (QO)
Jamie Phillips - $715,000 x 1 year (QO)
Joe Morrow - $715,000 x 1 year (QO)
Chase De Leo - $708,750 x 1 year (QO)

This gives us $6,575,085 in cap space to play with heading into the season. We will likely have to find out what to do with Petan/Dano/Morrow/Poolman/Chiarot as some could be waiver wire pickups.

This also gives us $20,364,168 heading into the 18/19 season. Where we have to get deals done with Laine, Connor, Wheeler. It's not going to be easy but this is likely where we look at moving Perreault out to keep Wheeler as he gets a slight raise.

Moving Perreault out gives us $24,489,168 in 19/20.

Laine - $9,500,000 x 8 years
Connor - $6,000,000 x 7 years
Wheeler - $6,000,000 x 3 years
= $21,500,000

Which leaves us with $2,989,168 in cap space heading into 19/20.

Not to bad. I think you have far too much cap space allocated to wingers. With Ehlers, Laine and Wheeler signed to big dollar deals I don't think we can go long term with Connor as well. I also think you sign Morrissey long term over Connor as he is the more important piece.

With individual contracts, I think you are at least a million low on Wheeler (Don't see any way he only accepts 6 million). I also think Laine is still too flawed a player to give over 9 million to, but it may come to that. If we only get a savings of roughly 1 million on a Morrissey bridge (His max is likely 5.5 on a 6 to 7 year deal) is it even worth it to bridge him. That million could be made up by down grading Chariot to a 800 k replacement. Ditto with Armia.

Yeah I did have another one where I gave 8 year deals to Trouba, Morrissey and Hellebuyck. Wheeler could likely end up not being on this team. He has played to many season being well underpaid so it might be in his best interest to pursue FA. We could also move out Little to keep Wheeler. A lot depends on the continued development of Vesalainen and Roslovic as they are his likely replacements. We can definitely afford to go long term with Connor though and we should. Bridge him and he's likely going to ask for a big raise. We'll regret that I think.

So much depends on unforeseen development and decline right now.
