6th round pick, 63rd overall, the Puck Time Pilots select, Mr. Little Engine That Could himself...………………. RW- Martin St. Louis!!

MARTY COMPLETE.jpg

Accolades:
6-time All Star
2-time Art Ross Trophy Winner
1-time Hart Trophy Winner
1-time Ted Lindsay Winner
3-time Lady Byng Winner (hey, hockey STILL has room for gentlemen...or at least guys who mostly stay away from stupid penalties...hehe)
1-time Stanley Cup Champion with the Lightning

From a nobody player that the Calgary Flames didn't want, to the champion he became with the Lightning, to the valued veteran he finished his career as with the Rangers, I don't think many personify "perseverance, fortitude, skill, toughness, determination, and will" quite like Marty St. Louis.

He could have easily disappeared into the night after being told he'd never be NHL material, but not only did he become a viable NHL player, but became an elite one, raised the level of any of his linemates, and proved himself valuable 5 on 5, on special teams, and in the locker room.

Very fast, and despite his height of 5'8 (I think the hockey cards were being generous there!), quite strong, and surprisingly hard to knock off the puck, while he was capable of skating circles around anyone, and delivering some big hits himself if need be.

St.Louis was always a threat on the ice sheet, and he was smart enough to know, when he drew attention, he should find an equally skilled teammate for the score.

From castoff to one of the all time greats. Martin St. Louis is the model by which many of today's smaller players should look to for inspiration when people say, "You can't do it!"

6th round, 64 th overall

FREMEN select, 500+ goal scorer, Hall of Famer!

C, Dale Hawerchuk

Speaking of underrated players, Dale Hawerchuk, is definitely sometimes overlooked at time when speaking of great Centers in NHL history. Especially playing the same time line as the Great One.

In Juniors, as a 17 year old, Hawerchuk scored 183 points. So a lot was expected of him coming into the NHL the next season. And he did not disappoint.

Hawerchuk burst onto the NHL scene in the 81-82 season, as a fresh faced, 18 year old kid. He came in dropping bombs. Scoring 45 goals and 103 points as a rookie! That earned him the Calder. Hawerchuk would put up 5 more 100 or 100+ seasons in his next 6.

Hawerchuk finished his NHL career with 518 goals!

But it's easy to see why Hawerchuk can be a bit overlooked at times, as you see the names in front of him, in this excerpt of his Team Canada participation.

Throughout his career, Hawerchuk was the consummate Canadian, always answering the call to international play when asked upon. Following a disappointing first round exit from the playoffs during his first year in Winnipeg, he met up with Canada at the 1982 World Championships winning a bronze medal. He also joined Canada in 1986 and 1989, winning another bronze and a silver medal, respectively. While perhaps his biggest hockey disappointment was not being invited to the 1984 Canada Cup training camp, his greatest hockey thrill (along with the Memorial Cup wins) was playing for Team Canada at the 1987 tournament. Hawerchuk played a checking role on the team behind Gretzky, Lemieux, and Messier, yet was instrumental in their success, winning the face-off that led to Canada's second-most famous goal. He was again a key cog in Canada's 1991 victory, moving to centre following an injury to Wayne Gretzky.

Well, speaking of Russian wingers, I'll go with arguably the greatest Russian hockey player EVER . . .

Sergei Gonchar said 'I had a chance to see him play live, he's one of the best one-on-one players I've seen, could protect the puck like nobody else . . . not a big guy, but the way he did things out there, he's definitely a top-five Russian player ever, for me.'

This player 'was known as the Wayne Gretzky of Europe' in the early 80's: Sergei Makarov ‘was known as the Wayne Gretzky of Europe’ in early ’80s

Lanny McDonald said, '“He had the fastest side-to-side movements. He’d deke so many top defencemen at top speed. You’d think you had him lined up and he’d (go by). He would never lose the puck.”

One player, who I cannot explicitly name for draft reasons but who I can say was Nieuwendyk's winger on those late 80's flames teams and actually spent 2 playoffs with the Pens towards the end of his career (GOOGLE IT), said this player was the HARDEST TO KNOCK off the puck he ever played against aside from Jagr.

He also said, "There was nobody who could take the puck down the ice like . . . (him) . . . nobody. He didn't even seem to move. He had that way of swaying without really lifting his feet, and people would just sail past him.'

This player won the 1990 Calder Trophy as a 31 year old rookie, beating out the likes of Mike Modano and Jeremy Roenick with ease.

BUT, that's just how good he was at 30. How good was he relative to NHL players IN HIS PRIME?

Go watch the 1987 Canada Cup. Watch him light it up. Watch the likes of Mark Messier and Mike Gartner playing against him.

Or, just look at the threads HERE at HFBOARDS comparing him to other NHL and all time greats . . .

* Better than Stastny (Sergei Makarov vs Peter Stastny)

* EASILY better than Bure (Makarov or Bure)

* PERHAPS better than Kharlamov (Valeri Kharlamov vs. Sergei Makarov)

Ladies and gentlemen, THE SKATING JABRONIS are proud the select the winger voted in 2014 as the 6th greatest winger (and 2nd greatest Gretzky Draft eligible winger behind) OF ALL TIME as voted by the panelists in the History of Hockey Forum at HFBoards:

SERGEI MAKAROV - RW

The Gentlemen Bastards are going to keep their streak going an select, LW Keith Tkachuk

ept_sports_nhl_experts-439853070-1270694799.jpg

One of the elite power forwards of his era, Tkachuk was known for his aggressive, physical style while consistently scoring points. He had more than 100 penalty minutes in 10 of his 19 NHL seasons, including three seasons with over 200 penalty minutes. Tkachuk was known for his goal scoring prowess, scoring 30 goals eight times, including two 40-goal seasons and two back-to-back 50 goal seasons, the latter of which he led the NHL in goals, with 52.

It's always good to have some beef that can do the dirty work and get messy with Mario and Brett, but not be a drag on the skill of the line.

527 Assists

The Gentlemen Bastard select their first blueliner in 6-time Cup winner, D Kevin Lowe

4866-229Fr.jpg

Kevin isn't your sexy defensman in the vein of Coffey, Boruque, Lidstrom, but he was the defensive linchpin in the Oiler's dynasty. His defensive game and discipline allowed Gretz, Mess, Kurri, and those big guns to freely roam the ice in search of goals and offense. After a rough rookie year, Lowe ultimately turned into the stay-at-home conscience of the glory years Oilers, and was rewarded with five Stanley Cup rings over that stretch.

Former teammate, <redacted> said of Lowe, "He’s the classic defenseman. He’s one who didn’t put the points on the board but is an All-Star anyway, which says a lot about his defensive ability."

He'll be able to reprise the same role on the Bastard's team that will look to emulate the offensive might of the Oil's dynasty.

The KINKY KIRKS are very pleased to select one of the greatest American born scorers of all time and one of the most dominant big men of the 90s, John LeClair.

LeClair announced his presence to the hockey world in the ‘93 playoffs, becoming the first player to ever score back to back OT winning goals in the finals.

However, he reached his full potential after he was traded to the Flyers, where he used his size and hands to bank three consecutive 50 goal seasons, making him the first American born player to accomplish this impressive feat.
