Don't say anything at all
My next candidates for new varsity D1 programs are Rutgers and the 7 FBS schools in California.

For Rutgers, they are my top candidate for the next new hockey team at a Big Ten school, due to its location in the largest media market in the US. My proposal of building their home arena on the site of the Meadowlands Arena is apparently out since the land is gonna be used for a hotel.

The FBS schools in California would mainly be driven to launch varsity teams by the rise of the sport's popularity in the state after two Stanley Cup wins by the Kings. All seven schools could use existing facilities:

California: Oracle Arena
Stanford: Cow Palace
UCLA: The Forum
USC: Long Beach Arena
Fresno State: Save Mart Center
San Diego State: Valley View Casino Center
San Jose State: HP Pavilion (would have to work out scheduling with Sharks and Barracudas)

The California schools could possibly form their own conference for hockey, which would become the second D1 conference in the sport consisting entirely of FBS schools (the other being the Big Ten, which is an all-sports conference that plays football at the FBS level).

With these 8 schools joining D1, the new all-CA conference could start a challenge series with the Big Ten being the only all-FBS school conferences in D1 hockey.

As to where Arizona State lands, I think the WCHA will add them. They only have one full member of D1 at the moment in the men's side, Bowling Green. They lost all the other men's D1 schools in the recent realignment, so all their other men's members are full D2 schools.

Arizona State could very well become a D1 power if they can replicate their club level success early on. I think they are actually more popular than the Coyotes are at the moment.

Intriguing ideas, but you're still talking about a lot of parties needing to put a lot of capital to fund two varsity programs (for Title IX reasons). I'm willing to accept that there could be a surprise addition or two in the near future, like Arizona State coming out of the blue, but the idea of an entire new conference forming suddenly seems very unlikely to me, especially without a lot of leaks about it getting out.

And while I agree that Rutgers makes sense, they also have a relatively underfunded athletic department comparatively and as such I'd highlight them as in the same camp as Northwestern. Makes sense, but not realistic. Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska seem to be the more likely options for the next Big Ten school to me, but they all have massive barriers that makes me think none will happen in the near immediate future.

Interesting points Big Z Man, I think you're on to something but not sure the specifics work out. I don't see the non-Pac12 california schools adding hockey. It's an expensive sport and often comes with title IX issues that have to be solved by adding another women's sport.

If ASU joins a conference, it's a temporary home. ASU is pushing other Pac-12 schools to add the sport. Really only need 3 more Pac-12 members + ASU to form a conference with Denver and CC as affiliates to create a 6-team conference.

ASU is way ahead of schedule and switched from playing a hybrid ACHA-NCAA schedule this season to playing a majority NCAA schedule. Staying independent is an option for ASU because there's no shortage of NCAA teams willing to travel to sunny AZ from their cold/snowy homes in Nov-Feb.

You have to figure that Arizona is watching ASU's progress closely from Tuscon. They already play at the ACHA level in the Tuscon Convention Center, so an arena is taken care of already. And they would have ASU as their in state rival.

Outside of the desert I think one school we will see add hockey as a varsity sport is Liberty University in Virginia. They have recently completed an entire renovation of their on campus LaHaye Ice Center. They are already an NCAA D1 sports school (they play FCS football) and they have a very supportive fan base of their ACHA D1 Men's and Women's hockey teams.

Here's the link to the article about their arena expansion
