Arizona Coyotes upset with flagship radio personality scheduled before games

Article also does a great job of describing the Cronkite school of sports journalism; students have opportunities to cover 4 major leagues, and get lots of experience. Many MSM outlets have hired graduates.

But related to thread title, the radio station selected to broadcast Coyotes games has hired a many-fired shock jock scheduled from 4-7p, leading up to games. The team is upset at his schtick with the inclusive environment they want.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Might there be a breach of contract on one side or the other to follow?

I seriously doubt that any team would have approval rights for lead in talent, as after dark radio(especially AM) has a minimal impact on income for stations.

Included in the article was a statement to The Athletic from the Coyotes:

“When we became aware that Fox Sports 910 had hired Dan Sileo, we immediately reached out to the station’s management to express our deep concern regarding Mr. Sileo’s abhorrent comments. Our promotion of inclusivity is deeply rooted into the fabric of who we are as an organization and we have no tolerance for racism, sexism, anti-Semitism or any other discriminatory behavior.”

Article also states a source from the Coyotes has said the Coyotes will not allow any of their players or coaches to appear on Sileo's show in the forseeable future.

I get all of that and the Coyotes are well within their rights to not have their staff be on this clown’s show, they just can’t dictate on air hires for inventory that’s not theirs.

Sure they can...they're providing a product. They can negotiate the terms of future availability of their product. It's as simple as "We will not be renewing our contract with Fox Sports 910 to be our flagship station if Sileo remains the lead-in to our games; we're willing to take less money for our broadcast rights elsewhere in order to have a more-inclusive lead-in."

Christ, this isn't even new. The Whalers exercised their demand 30 years ago that local sports-broadcast legend Arnold Dean and his sports-talk call-in show have the slot before their pre-game show on WTIC 1080 in Hartford. Dean would have preferred to retire (He was about 80 at the time. Even after retiring as sports director, he continued to do SportsTalk1080 P/T and only before Whalers games) and WTIC would have preferred to lead-in with signed on-air talent they were trying to boost the visability of. (Specifically, liberal on-air political satirist Colin McEnroe, who also occasionally covered sports for both WTIC and The Hartford Courant newspaper.) Eventually, some compromise was reached that WTIC's UConn basketball play-by-play announcer Joe D'Ambrosio could also host ST1080 before Whalers games...but McEnroe could not.

30 years ago is 30 years ago, might as well be 100 years ago. Things changed 20 years ago and have only gotten worse.

They just signed the deal, they’re on a distant #2 sports station, after dark ad rates to buy an hour in the Phoenix market can’t be more than $100/hr

Don't agree with the guy either but from what I can read the Coyotes can't do that much here only be upset.

It was smart of them to at least say something, though. Now their position is known, and there’s no guilt by association.

From what I’ve been hearing.... Sileo was an iHeart Media hire and the station management wasn’t involved with it.

Going to be interesting how this plays out.

I can’t imagine it had entirely to do with coyotes.
All we know is that the Coyotes, very publicly, and very strongly objected to Dan Sileo being on the air in the slot prior to Coyotes games. 910 has1 team, the Coyotes, and the Coyotes announced to the public that they would let no players or staff appear on that show.

It is a strange fact of nature that for no reason at all, a company might shoot itself in the foot. 910 did it. The Raiders did it. The Coyotes did it under prior ownership.

Called three black NFL players monkeys.
Told Erin Andrews to go make him some cake and women belong in porn, not sports.
Among other things.

Christ is it any wonder why Coyotes are mad.

Why would anyone hire him?

Disgusting. 100% with the coyotes on this one.

I REALLY need to get on with my business idea of being a "This is a bad idea" consultant.

And I'll be a hindsight consultant and be like "Your should have listened to Warden"

But agree with the yotes here, and hopefully he is turfed.

Why would anyone hire him.

Because Sileo was popular enough to be syndicated earlier in his career and iHeartMedia is a terrible company, by all indications. Probably thought it could fly under the radar, and they almost got away with it. As far as I can tell it was only the Athletic that covered this, no other mentions in other local publications.

MSM doesn't seem to be following the story.

That's not to say that the Coyotes' complaints led their sponsors into threatening to pull advertising on the radio station. Nor that non-affiliated advertisers also threatened to pull their advertising. That can be a lot of pressure.

It's going to come down to what's in their contract.
I'm sure some sports teams have outs clauses to protect them in case their flagship station turns into KKK radio.

iHeart is going to keep the whole affair as quiet as possible.

The fact the only one local journalist caught on to it isn’t really surprising.
