Qualifying him would have come with a built-in raise, and depending on some CBA factors, it might have to be a 1-way contract. Dineen is an 2016 3rd round pick who has done OK in the AHL and hasn't firmly grabbed an NHL roster spot, even with the Coyotes. Not qualifying Dineen meant other teams could have swooped in and signed him, but when none did, it gave both Dineen and the Coyotes flexibility to sign the right type of contract.
