I got this idea from the Canucks board. They have a thread stating "So you think you can draft" in which the forum posters give their picks for who the Canucks should have selected at that spot.

I think this would be a cool exercise to look back on and see. Especially with this draft being so controversial. The only rules are, the player had to be available at the pick. Example with the 19th overall pick you can't pick Thomas Harley because he was picked 18th. Also to make it more accurate you have to apply the draft day trades for picks as well. So when the Sens traded up in the second at the cost of third we are using that high second pick here. Also if the Sens picked a player at a certain spot and you like that pick you just keep it.

Original Picks
1-19 Lassi Thomson
2-32 Shane Pinto
2-37 Mads Sogaard
4-94 Viktor Lodin
5-125 Mark Kastelic
7-187 Maxence Guenette

My Picks
1-19 Samuel Poulin
2-32 Arthur Kaliyev
2-37 Raphael Lavoie
4-94 Jordan Spence
5-125 Judd Caulfield
7-187 Trent Miner

Safe to say I was not a fan of any of the picks.

I am curious to see who others would of picked and when we look back what the outcomes will be.

1 - 19 Lassi Thomson
2 - 32 Arthur Kaliyev
2 - 37 Egor Afanasyev
4 - 94 Michal Teply
5-125 Isaiah Saville
7 - 187 Dustin Wolf

I like Sogaard the prospect, but I definitely question the price paid to get him at 37. I'd rather double up on goalies late (like in this scenario) and go with the giant/skilled project forward in Afanasyev.

Great Idea for a thread! In retrospect I really think the way the first 18 picks broke down hurt the sens I really wanted a D man but all the best ones got picked before the sens had their chance. Despite the sens being heavy on the left side Heinola was the highest D man I had on my list at the time of the sens draft so thats who I would have taken as I believe in BPA and staying true to your list.

Original Picks
1-19 Lassi Thomson
2-32 Shane Pinto
2-37 Mads Sogaard

My Picks
1-19 Ville Heinola
2-32 Raphael Lavoie
2-37 Jamieson Rees
4-94 Mason Millman

I don’t like this as a fair assessment, because of the potential butterfly effect of an alternative selection, outside of round 1.

19. Tomasino
32. Lavoie
44. Rees
83. Honka
94. Keppen
125. Kastelic
187. Guenette

This scout no make trade

Thomson is not a bad pick ... And its a position of need. I think it was a bit of a reach there but still not bad.
Is anyone going to pick Pinto or Lodin?
I think Pinto would have been there at 44. I would pick Rees (44), Afanasyev(45) , M. Robertson(49) or Leason(56) over him.
Lodin would likely have gone undrafted.
I don't mind the Kastelic and Guenette picks at all. Decent late round value.

I end up with 3 very different top 6 potential forwards. 2 big bruising bottom 6ers with some scoring touch, and 2 RDs hoping 1 pans out. No goalie.. I didn't see the big rush.

19. Ville Heinola
32. Egor Afanasyev
44. Pavel Dorofeyev
83. Layton Ahac

(If I had to trade, which I wouldn’t have, for 37, then Raphael Lavoie instead of Dorofeyev + Ahac)

94. Ethan Phillips
125. Justin Bergeron
187. Jeremie Boucheler

Not drafting a goalie because I don’t know how to evaluate them, and feel we’d have a better draft without one.

4 D, all of different skill sets, 3 high potential forwards. Would have been thrilled with something like this.

If you’re a scout you’re dealt the hand you get so you should have to pick the exact same spots the Sens picked.
Agreed.

Also it's easy to pick Afanasyev or Kaliyev at 32 in hindsight, knowing Lavoie is waiting at 37. I wanted Lavoie at 32, a bunch of us would have drafted him at 19 if they ran the draft.

Also, as an outsider, we're picking straight for skill. That's certainly a lot easier when you don't have to worry about interviews

The butterfly effect is a real issue...

That said, I'm pretty sure I could have gotten the guys I wanted...

19: Lavoie or Tomasino, a bit of a toss up for me (I've actually grown to like Thomson, so I'm ok with him, he's just not who I was eyeing).
32: Kaliyev (no brainer at that point, I'd be tempted at 19 but I didn't really buy into him 100%
45: (I wouldn't have made a trade) Afanasyev, if he was gone, Leason
83: Honka (he was a guy I'd probably have considered at 45 if Afanasyev or Leason weren't on the board.

After that, I honestly don't know enough to have an opinion, but those 4 could easily have been ours, and I'd have been thrilled. I also really wanted Dorofeyev, but not enough to pass up on Afanssyev or Leason. Ideally I'd have pushed to trade up from 83 if I thought he was attainable, and would have probably been starting to make calls when he wasn't picked by the end of the 2nd.

I like our pick in the 5th, Kastelic, I'd stick with him I guess...

Speaking of butterfly effect, who knows, maybe we could have drafted a guy like Heinola with the first pick, and still been able to draft Lassi with the next pick, then Pinto, etc.

No trades for me. Like PD, I woudl have worked the phone looking to move up for Newhook, but obviously that wasn't doable so I stand pat at each pick.
19th Philip Tomasino
32nd Bobby Brink
44th: Nick Robertson**
83rd: Domenic Fensore
94th: Jordan Spence
125th: Marshall Warren
187th: Dustin Wolf

**At the time of the draft I was saying "either Robertson or Leeson" I think I would have taken Robertson.
