Are black jerseys a disadvantage?

I'm wondering if a team having a black jersey like the Anaheim home colors is ever a disadvantage? Has a player of a team that wears a dark jersey ever mentioned that he has lost sight of the puck because it blends in too much with the team's dark color?

What about for you as a fan? Does a dark jersey ever cause you to lose sight of the puck?

Wouldn't you be just as likely to lose sight of the puck if the opponent wears black sweaters?

They're seeing the puck against a plane of white ice, the jerseys are above that. I really don't think it would cause an issue.

Also, LA has black jerseys.

If you're talking about black stick tape, maybe I can see that being an advantage for a skater, disadvantage for a goalie. But yeah, the jerseys are too high to not differentiate between the equipment and a puck.

I thought forwards tended to get black stick tape to make it harder for goalies to read their shots and defenceman used white tape to blend their sticks into the ice a bit more.

The only time I could see it being significant would be during a scramble in the goal crease, where the ref might blow the play down if the puck blended in with a jersey.

And maybe since black uniforms correlate to more penalties, though there are nuances to that issue.

Wasn't there a study that showed teams with black jersey get less penalties? Probably not spot on and it was quite awhile ago but i remember reading it.

If anything, I'd be more concerned about the colors and referee psychology. I'm sure some social psychologist somewhere has done a study where they show two sets of volunteers a video tape of an ambiguously aggressive action (it could be sports, but doesn't have to be.) For one set of volunteers, the video tape has the aggressor in black, and the other person in white. Vice versa for the second set of volunteers - same video taped action, but in different colors. Volunteers then rate how aggressive the action was.

If anything, I know players complain about losing the puck in LA because the folks at STAPLES Center try to turn the hockey games into rock concerts, with all the fans being kept literally in the dark and the "spotlight" on the rink. Supposedly it's to keep focus on the players. I suppose that could be an LA problem, with Nicholson et al popping up at Lakers games and the like.

Considering where the puck is for the majority of the game, I'd say black tape and skates have more to do with hiding the puck than any jerseys/socks do.

Past research in social psychology has actually shown a correlation between wearing black and aggression. So I guess that's an advantage unless the penalties are excessive.

Sincerely, a psychology major
