At first glance, I thought that was a lot of players for the St. Louis Blues!

Last season 4 players went into arbitration

Kulak, Trouba, Ceci and Gemel Smith.
Only Smith stayed with his team (played 17 games), all others were traded.

Smith was let go earlier than Ceci or Trouba . Well not traded he was waived by the Stars midseason and the Bruins picked him up. Trouba and Ceci stayed the whole season with their teams before they got traded.

It's funny how trouba is back in arbitration again. Talk about ungrateful and greedy.

How many cups did he help his previous team win ? 0 This is the problem with the nhl , overpaid , and awful contracts handed out.

Can someone confirm how the second buy out window works? Does the player have to go through arbitration for a team to utilize that window? Troy Brower got bought out in the second window, but Calgary had Kulak receive an arb contract

It's only been a few weeks and Trouba already wants out of NY?
He did the holdout two years back and we had tremendous fun daily calculating how much money he lost. Last year he was wiser and chose Arbitration because that guarantees you get signed by August on a ~fair contract.

Looks like he again wants to get signed for sure to a ~fair contract. Maybe they weren't on the same page with NYR over a long-term contract.

No, the Arbitration means that the team can't be certain of their cap situation due to it, and so they get the (another) chance to become cap compliant through a buyout of a player. The player getting bought out doesn't need to be the Arbitrated one.

That's not what I'm saying. Look at the Calgary example for instance. Could they have used that second buy out window if they had not gone through an arbitration hearing with any of their players? Kulak received the arbitration award, Brower got bought out.

Thought they were about to agree on a 7 year, $7+ contract with Trouba?
Then they signed panarin and need cap a bit more now and maybe the buyout .

They could use arbitration and then sign him for eight after Christmas or whenever you're allowed to extend him if it helps the cap as someone in the other thread suggested

Oh. SPC 13 (c) on buyouts:

The notice of termination shall be effective if given in the form attached as CBA Exhibit 20, with a copy to the NHLPA and Central Registry as follows:

-snip-

(ii) For Clubs who have Club or Player elected Salary Arbitration filings pursuant to Article 12, within the forty-eight (48) hour period beginning on the third day following the later of: (i) the Club's receipt of its last salary arbitration award; or (ii) settlement of its last case (provided such award was received or such settlement occurred prior to 7:00 p.m. New York time; awards or settlements that occurred or were received at or after 7:00 p.m. New York time will be deemed to have occurred or received the following business day for purposes of this provision).

Apparently if they go far enough with the Arbitration but end up settling in the end, that is enough to trigger using the 13 on a player's SPC.

The wording would suggest that it's enough if someone elects to go to Arbitration, and then they settle it (apparently in practice by signing a SPC in mid-process).

copied from CapFriendly

Buyouts Outside of the Regular Period

Clubs whom have 1 or more arbitration filings may be permitted to perform a buyout outside of the regular window. This gives teams another opportunity to become cap compliant following an arbitration case.

Clubs are permitted to perform a buyout outside the regular period during the 48 hour period beginning on the third day after the final of [CBA 13(c)ii]:
  1. Settlement of the Club's final arbitration case, or
  2. Receipt of the Club's last arbitration award

Requirements:
  1. A buyout can only be performed on a player who was on the clubs reserve list at 3:00pm on the most recent trade deadline
  2. The player must have a cap hit of at least $3,455,438 for the 2019 offseason

There is an exception to this buyout period (CBA Reference: Section 11.18; 12.3) if the arbitation was Club-elected (as opposed to player-elected) and the player did not receive a qualifying offer. In this case, a minimum of two arbitration cases are necessary to trigger the buy-out period outside the regular window.

The number of arbitration filings required to open the buy-out window outside the regular period are as follows:

Mininum Number of Arbitration Cases Required to Trigger a Buyout Window Outside of the Regular Period
Arbitration CaseMin. Number of Arbitration Cases
Player-Elected1
Club-Elected [Player received a Qualifying Offer]1
Club-Elected [Player did not receive a Qualifying Offer]2

it seems like you're correct. Vermette was an example of this in 2016. Stone elected for arbitration but they didn't go with the ruling therefore were able to buy-out Vermette.

Thanks for clarification

NYR pretty much traded for Trouba at rental price so not a big deal they can probably get back the equivalent of what they sent the jets at the tdl if they have to
