The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed defenseman Andrew MacDonald to a multi-year contract extension today, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

MacDonald was acquired by the Flyers around this year's trade deadline on March 4 from the NY Islanders, and since joining the team, has four assists in 19 games and recorded over 20 minutes of ice-time in 14 of those games, including a Flyers-high of 28:49 at Pittsburgh on Apr. 12.

The 6-1, 190-pound defenseman led all NHL players in blocked shots this season with 242 and was one of three players in the NHL with over 200 blocks.

I honestly think they might have something going on with the league about the Pronger contract. If they remove that from the books this isn't a bad deal in terms of space in the summer. I don't see why the league wouldn't cut us a break when the Devils just got the biggest one this year.....

would have assumed if it's 6years it would be 4.5m, and if 3-4years it would be 5m.

i guess 0.5m wasn't gonna stop them.

Yea. Not the best contract. I dont dislike MacD and I think he is a solid #4 defender but Homer just paid him to be our top pairing defender.

I couldn't care less about the hit. It's a bit high, but whatever. But 6 years? That's a long time to commit to a bottom four defenseman. That's the kind of length you give to pair or top line guys, not your number four.

I want to see how this deal looks when the cap is up to 75 million next year and 80 the next lol. Every player on a contract at those times are going to look like bargains.

Oh and remember we all thought the Streit deal was terrible, he only was our best defenseman this year. MacDonald has been good with the Flyers this year, the only worry is he needs to produce offensively to make this contract work, which he really hasn't done in his short time here.

Wow. Don't like the length but the cap-hit is fine. Figured it would be around $5 million. Was hoping for four years or less.

Seems Homer doesn't want to retool his D through Free Agency again and come up short.
Whatever, just get rid of Grossman now.

Gotta get rid of Grossman, its an absolute must now.

Or L. Schenn. Neither can be here.

Why?

I'm not concerned at all about the term. It isn't like he'll be in his late 30s at the end of the contract.

Obviously something like $4.75 would have been a bit better--but he would have easily been the best D available in free agency, so I don't think this is above market value.

6.5 million now to re-sign Schenn, a back up goalie, and bring in another 4th liner if Raffl is on the third line. Another defenseman seems to be needed as well. I think we will see some fireworks at the draft.
