Kopitar

For

Erik Karlsson

Kings fans, imagine having two Norris-winning dmen on the blue line again. That's the path to another cup for you guys. Remember when you had the mobility and skill of Doughty and Voynob together? Remember the havoc Niedermayer and Pronger wreaked.

I'm only semi-joking with this post.

First team I thought of as well. Setting aside the obvious (salary issues, roster issues), if it happens it's going to have to be a team in that "window is closing" tier: Boston, Pens, Capitals, Nashville. Maybe you could throw in the teams that are at the height of their powers right now: Dallas, St Louis, Vegas.

Clearly most of those wouldnt work. But Boston, yeah I could see him winding up there and giving them a few more kicks at the can before Krejci, Marchand and Bergeron really start to drop off.
If the Boston is going after him then they should be going after Kane.....just saying

Kopitar at 40% retained to Colorado for Byram and Compher, plus another contract if needed.

Colorado would cement themselves as the lead contender in the West for the next few years with an elite defensive center capable of 60-70 points, while dropping Kadri down to maximize their 3rd line. Very similar to the Kings deal for Richards that put them over the top.

The Kings gain the most glaring absence in their prospect pool, a top pairing offensive left shot defender. The $4 million or so retained for three years won't impact their ability to spend big money.

Literally the best trade option for LA to trade Kopitar to is...themselves. Even at 50% retained Kopitar is a cap breaker for almost every team in the league unless the Kings are willing to take back equally undesirable contracts in return. Add to that the flat cap environment likely to persist into next season (at least) and the odds of any team taking a chance on Kopitar is pretty remote.

Pass.

I still think Kopitar is a great player, but not worth giving Byram up for.

He had to give the Kings a list of 7 teams last year that he would accept a trade to. Curious who is on his list...

Solid 60+ point player and two time Champ, two things that you could use in any locker room. Not what he used to be but still elite and a real piece of the puzzle for a contender. 10m isn’t crazy for his output except this is a flat cap era...

Best approach is for a contender trying to go all the way to get him @retention for prospects/picks. Otherwise why leave LA?

The kings hung onto him too long when they were clearly rebuilding. They could have got a blue chip prospect if they had traded him earlier.

Kadri, Girard, 1st for Kopitar + 40% retained or Donskoi dump.

See the problem with this situation is it’s one where the GM’s interests are at odds with/diverge from the team’s interests.

As GM, Blake is on the clock and under pressure to make the playoffs ASAP. But the team is in the middle of a major rebuild and while it’s nice to make the playoffs they’ll have no chance at getting past Round 1. All a small playoff run (or attempt to get there) will do is create a brief moment of happiness while screwing the team out of top picks and wasting the last bits of Kopitar/Doughty’s primes.

How is Blake under pressure to make the playoffs ASAP when he was the GM when the organization finally gave up and started the major rebuild, and has allowed him to make all of the major rebuilding moves so far? Blake's job is safe for now. If the team doesn't show improvement next year, and isn't in a legitimate playoff race in 22-23, that's when he's on the clock.

The kings hung onto him too long when they were clearly rebuilding. They could have got a blue chip prospect if they had traded him earlier.

He's had a full NMC up until this year. There was never a good time to trade Kopitar.

They probably could have convinced him when they were competing with detroit to see who was worse, or at least tried.

If he was available I am sure the Rangers would be the first in line for any trade.

I do wonder what they would be able to offer though.

kravtsov,+ Kreider+Georgiev +1st round pick?
Overpayment. Rangers are in pretty much the same window as the Kings, maybe a year or two ahead. Getting out of the Kreider contract balances the deal a bit.....but still too much.

Kopitar isn't chasing anything. He's got his Cups. He's got his money. He's got his family. He's exceedingly comfortable in LA and with the Kings. Possibly too comfortable, but it is what it is.

If the kings decide to trade Kopitar it would bring back a young offensive defenseman in the 21 - 24 ish range with upside, first and a contract with less the 3 years on it.

This might be even worse than trading Byram. Upgrading from Kadri to Kopitar is not worth that hole.

The Avs are not thirsty for a 2nd line center. They have a good one in Kadri who was super clutch in the playoffs and is on a team friendly deal that expires right before he gets "old", leaving us with tons of flexibility and an ideal in-house replacement who will be cheap in Newhook.

Kick the tires on PLD because a 25 year-old who is the foundation of somebody else's offense rarely becomes available but Sakic has constructed a dream defense and he's not about to trade one of the most important pieces away to upgrade at second line center while having the privilege of paying Kopitar thru 2024 (even with retention).

Kopi is a legend and still a great player and some team who really does need to upgrade at 1/2 C should absolutely look at him if he's willing to move...which he may very well not want to. For the price the Kings will want/deserve, the Avs are definitely not one of those teams.

I think it makes more sense all around to trade FOR someone who will play WITH Kopitar now (and in the future the other young centers we have coming up) rather than try to force a trade away of Kopitar.
