What do the scouts look for when drafting a goaltender? Just taking a quick look back on junior stats for some very good NHL tenders, it seems that their numbers weren't that great at the time they were drafted. I know that size and being athletic matters, but what else?

Another goalie in the OHL is Justin Peters. Of all the 94's in the OHL, Justin has played the most minutes. In the top 10 for GAA and Save %. Looks like Coach Cameron is going with him as St Mikes # 1 goalie.

The best draft eligible goaltender in the OHL this year is David Shantz from the Mississauga Ice Dogs. He's been outstanding for the Ice Dogs this year and is one of the key reasons why the Ice Dogs currently lead the OHL's eastern conference. Shantz is currently 4th in the OHL with a .925 save percentage (behind 2 OA's and a 19 year-old) and he's 8th in the league in gaa. Peter's has played more minutes than Shantz because St.Mike's has played 16 games compared to Mississauga's 13. Peters is a good prospect but he doesn't possess the consistency that Shantz does.

What about Houle, he is finally getting some respect that he deserves being behind Fleury, I don't really like his style but it works.

1.98 GAA, .925 SV%, played 14.2 games and averages 26 shots per game.

Just to show it isn't helping playing on a good team here is backup François Proteau stats. 3.19 GAA, .882 SV%

alot of these goalies you guys are talking about are back-ups, who most of the time only get to play against the weaker teams so their stats should be good, I look for the kid who plays on weaker teams and is the starter and still holds his own.

Most scouts watch for the way a goalie plays and a little to do about their stats because some kids look great with a good D yet put them on another team with poor D and those big rebounds that were cleared buy the good D-men now end up in his net.

Martin Houle is the best goaltender in the Q right now.

Don't forget Alexandre Vincent from the Sags who has better stats than Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers. Cedrick Desjardins can also be a good goalie if he continues to play like he does.
