Any chance that McDavid could be the GOAT?

Gretzky is clearly the GOAT but watching McDavid's goal vs Vancouver looks like a cheat code.

Could McDavid still be the most skilled player to ever play in the NHL at the same time as not being close to the greatest player? Or would that make him the best?

Not more skilled than Mario. And he'd have to do something like win 7 straight scoring titles convincingly, and 8 consecutive Harts to start to be in consideration for the best player ever. Then we go from there.

Not even close to best ever. Not even close to best offensive ever either. Hed have to have a few cups and at least 10 scoring titles. Gretzky had NINE harts. Is Mcdavid really dominating his peers by all that much? He didn't even outscore his teamate last year. Even if he is the most skilled ever that doesn't make him the GOAT. There are players out there that have a ton of skill but aren't in the top 100.

Depends on the criteria. If we're talking stats, then there's no way in hell, no one will ever touch Gretzky. But it's pretty obvious that if you take McDavid and place him in his era, he would put up the same stats and perhaps even more. Go watch a vintage game and see how the goalies play and then watch a goalie today, it's pretty hilarious how terrible goalies were back then. I'm pretty sure Lucic today could score 50 in a season back then.

Not this again!!! What would Gretzky do if you take him as he was 1988 in place him the 50s? He would set records he himself wouldn't even touch. Its the worst way to 'compare' them as that scenario is unrealistic.

I really wish people would stop saying this stuff. You don't determine who is the Greatest of all time by using a criteria of placing players into other eras. Why don't we put Gretzky into the 1940s and watch him score 300 pts. This is silly. Or magically place an average player from 2040 into todays game and call them the GOAT because they destroy. How can any serious hockey person use this criteria to rate players? The game evolves and becomes more skilled every year so you can only determine the caliber of a player by comparing him to his peers of the time. And obviously Gretzky dominated his peers in a way nobody ever did BEFORE or since. And McDavid clearly has not come close to that kind of dominance.

Sorry, but this is such a weak position.

Your argument would have some weight if McDavid came out the gate and won every scoring title at the bare minimum. It completely falls apart because he doesn’t dominate his peers in any comparable way to any of the Big Four, let alone Gretzky.

Hope you have the same enthusiasm when players 30-40 years from now will be defined as half-cyborgs and the same tired stance is trotted out about how if you teleported them back to the 2010s-2020s, they would rip the league apart.

Or you might realize how pointless such an argument is.

May I ask you to make another sarcastic Crosby/Malkin jinx thread instead of this one?
They could use a point boost.

Make sure to include your previous "greatest leader" and other nonsensical drivel as well.
Don't worry, Ovechkin will be back from the Russian gulag in a few games for more of your usual nonsense.
