Is there not a bigger problem to sign him again? He is the best player on the ice, night after night. THIS season.

Not overly worried because he's an RFA, so we'll figure it out one way or another. I guess he'd be a good offer sheet target, but somehow I'm just not too worried. He's gotta come in under Point, and that feels workable.

ya'll remember about a year ago when people were arguing that Cirelli wasn't as good as Point defensively, and would never win the Selke?

Selke is a dumb reputation award. He has no business winning it yet no matter how good he is. Maybe in a few years when he's built a solid reputation around the league.

Or when Bergeron finally retires... but in any case everyone is gonna learn who Cirelli is real soon. Seems every week we hear "I don't think (player) realizes how fast Cirelli really is" from Engblom

Yes, the Selke is a "reputation" award and it usually given for a body of work over years, but it is hardly a "dumb" award. It's the award given for how hockey is supposed to be played so I don't know how that could be dumb.

The reputation part of it is dumb.

You could say this for every award that's voted on

Point is a defensive monster too though. We just haven't seen him in that role in a while. I think it'd be pretty hard to judge which one is better if they were both in that role at the same time... Although, just for fun, imagine Palat - Cirelli - Point up against, well, anybody.

A couple. Selke is the biggest, Norris to a lesser extent. I think most other awards have year by year criteria though, even if sometimes it's not the best.

I know this will not be a popular take but it is what it is. Since Feb 1st Cirelli has had 2 goals and 4 asst's in the 14 games. These are not numbers that are impressive especially when you consider the number of wins in the period. Your best players must be at their best in the crunch time going into the post season. He is below expectations for this period.

Now have at it.

Will GLADLY take him, always looking for a solid defensive forward to shut down top lines, and PK specialist. Was he not injured a few weeks ago and missed some time?

This is why those saying Cirelli is getting 5M+ on a bridge are crazy. Cirelli is a great defensive forward with good offensive skills, he's just not a 60 point player. But a 50 point shutdown center is still great to have. To me Cirelli should be getting no more than 4M max on a bridge because we need to see if he can produce at a 50 or so point pace for an extended time.

If he’s getting 4 on a bridge, what would he be worth to you if we didn’t have to bridge him?

edit: I see you did say “max” so he could get less in your scenario. I was just curious about what you think his value would be on a longer deal at this point in his career

Right now he makes 728k a year, I would give him 5x that on his bridge which would be 3.64M for 2 or 3 years depending on how many years Sergachev gets. Can't have them being due long term contracts at the same time. His agent probably asks for what Johnson got on his bridge, not money but % of the cap, which was 4.84%. At the 81.5 current cap that's 3.94M which I would be fine with but no more. If they go by an 84M cap it puts it over 4M but at the time to me Johnson was more important to the team than Cirelli is so I wouldn't do that.

On a long term deal it's hard to say just yet. For his career he's a 0.56ppg player which averages out to 46 points a season. If you go with the 100k per point rule 4.6M which on a 7 year deal for him I would be ok with. His current season ppg is 0.66 which is 54 a season. So anything between 4.6 and 5.4 on a 7 or 8 year deal I would do. I expect his point totals to be in the 45-55 range each season so the value for money is great, kinda like Killorn, then you get the defensive play. I'm not sure how you put a $ on that towards a contract.

To be honest we now have Coleman to be that shutdown center, If Cirelli is to have a home he needs to produce at the 2C level. My expectations for the 2C on this team will be 22 to 25G and 55 to 60 points. This should be totally doable considering the amount of attention the 1st line gets from opponents defensive lines. I am not sure Cirelli is the guy that can get that done. So bridge him at 2.5 to 3 allow Stephens a couple more years to see if he will be a 2C.
