AMC Networks today announced that it has greenlit a new series set in The Walking Dead Universe, starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Isle of the Dead envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror. Set to premiere on AMC+ and AMC in 2023, the first season will consist of six episodes. Eli Jorné, who has been a writer and co-executive producer on The Walking Dead for multiple seasons and has an overall deal with AMC Studios, will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series, which is overseen by Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of The Walking Dead Universe. Cohan and Morgan will also serve as executive producers.

"This is a very big day for the expanding universe we are building around The Walking Dead," said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. "It not only adds another compelling series to this collection, it extends our storytelling around two unforgettable characters fans have grown to love, hate or hate and then love in Maggie and Negan, brilliantly inhabited by Lauren and Jeffrey. It also lets us explore a corner of this universe located on the island of Manhattan, with an iconic skyline that takes on a very different meaning when viewed through the lens of a zombie apocalypse."

"Eli has created a chaotic, beautiful, grimy madhouse of the dead for Negan, Maggie, and fans of the show eager to discover an unseen and insane world of the TWD Universe," said Gimple. "Lauren and Jeffrey have always been fantastic collaborators and now, we bring that collaboration to the next level with a series that will take these characters to their limits with the world -- and each other. All of us are thrilled to take you on an all new, all different TWD epic for the ages."

Barring some parallel universe magic (because it means she lives), this news is actually quite terrible. Maggie has been the worst character on the show for many many season now.

I thought it was really strange to announce this news now - it means that anytime Maggie and/or Negan are in danger we already know that they're going to survive. :thumbd:

Yep. I would’ve assumed Maggie was surviving already anyway, but this reinforces that. Negan i was on the fence about for this final season

Yes x 1000.

And there's already an amazing thread for the Walking Dead Universe...

The final season actually has about 12 more episodes. They've divided the season up into three 8 episode parts with the middle section ending in April and the final section starting and ending later this year.

Nope. Maggie still "hates" him and Negan got away from the group because he thought she'd end up killing him eventually - which makes announcing this series now very very dumb, but nothing you wouldn't expect at that point.

Lost interest long ago. Watched I think the first 6 or so seasons of the original show and 4-5 episodes of the one that starts in LA and nothing else. Become redundant and crazy.

Just what we were all hoping for.

TBH, if Angela Kang is the show runner, there's some hope. I have liked what she's done with the main TWD, given what she took over.

milking even more money out of a show that had 1.5 good seasons

TWD feels like a wasted franchise. It could have very easily been as genre-defining as Star Wars or Bond. Early on, it actually looked to be on track for that.

Maybe I'm just not invested enough to see the upside, but at this point the spinoffs feel like Fast & Furious sequels. Not only am I not going to watch, but I actively wish they would stop making them.

And yet another spinoff announced by AMC. Won't be long before we get The Walking Dead network.

from thefutoncritic.com:

AMC Networks today announced that Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will reunite for a new series in the expanding universe around The Walking Dead. The series will continue the journey and love story of the Rick Grimes and Michonne characters. Lincoln and Gurira, who have been actively involved in conceiving the creative and the continuation of their characters' story, made the surprise announcement while appearing onstage as part of the final panel for The Walking Dead at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, will serve as showrunner on the series, which will begin with six episodes in 2023. Lincoln and Gurira are both executive producers.

"This is a moment fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in the helicopter early in season nine, and Michonne journeyed away on a quest to find him the following season," said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. "What a great surprise for the fans at this final Comic-Con for the series that launched this universe and made television history. We couldn't be more excited for a truly epic series finale later this year and to see Andy and Danai return in a new series they helped create, one of three new series coming in 2023 that continue the stories of so many iconic and fan-favorite TWD characters."

"Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite people and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people," Gimple said. "Working with all of them continues to be a dream come true. The three of us, along with a terrific team of TWD all stars and incredible new voices, are crafting an insane love epic worth the long, long wait"
