These playoffs are the first ones since 2009(!) when not only there wasn't any sweep in the first round of playoffs (8 series), but all the series would be 2-1 after 3 games!
Previous times it happened:
  • 1991
  • 1992
  • 2002
  • 20034
  • 200910
Only post-merger playoffs since 1980 have been examined. Note that the year is the playoffs year, not the "season" year which would be one less.

In 2003, the Devils was up 3-0 in the first round series against Boston.

Also in 2003, Anaheim was up 3-0 in the first round series against Detroit (and swept them, too).

Isn't the sweep criteria redundant here?

If every series is 2-1 then by definition there's no sweep.

Sweepless first rounds on their own happen all the time so on it's own isn't remarkable.

All series that start 2-1 are non-sweeps, but not all non-sweeps start 2-1 (they can start 3-0).

The thread starter is discussing the latter.

Yeah, but a sweep is irrelevant to the discussion is what I'm saying.

All series starting out 2-1 is the discussion. That negates any relevance a sweep has.

Yes, that’s why he said specifically “not only there wasn't any sweep in the first round of playoffs (8 series), but all the series would be 2-1 after 3 games!”.

I vividly recall the Habs got swept in 2009 first round though.

It brought about the biggest roster turnover in one summer that I have ever seen.
