A little earlier in the year than normal, but with the Skinner trade just occurring, this is of topic of discussion right now. The roster is probably fairly well set (barring a Faulk move), at least for the key forwards and D. Using the roster currently on the Canes website, predict each players goal totals. I also put a "total goals" poll in the thread. Keep in mind, that there will be other callups and what not, so the team total goals does not need to exactly equal each of the players listed.

For reference, the Canes as a team scored: 17/18: 225, 16/17: 212, 15/16: 196 goals.

Also, TB scored 290 goals last year to lead the league and the Sabres scored a league's worst 198. The median for team goals was about 240 goals last year.

Mine assumes no major injuries causing significant loss of playing time, which won't happen, and that Faulk is on the team, but here goes. The total is 231. With injuries to some of these guys and callups getting a few, I think it will be close to 230, maybe just a bit over. Will vote the 231-240 range, but expect it to be closer to 231.

I have to believe they’ll eventually trade Faulk for a forward, which will change the dynamics a bit. But here goes:

= 220

Throw in some goals from callups and I’d call it ~230

I think our powerplay will be much better this year based off drinking the non-Bill Peters Kinetico filtered kool-aid. (Yes I realize Brindy ran our powerplay but Pastor Bill always had the last say). Svech, Aho and Teuvo will score at least 30 a piece and at least 10 will hit double digits. And since we won't be chasing the puck around our own end quite as much as last year, we'll be even more of a Corsi darling than we were before.

Just for reference, last year the board's most popular choice was 240-249 and the Canes came in at 225 (I predicted 240), so it looks like right now, it's coming lower than last year's projections. Only @Novacane and @wastedtime got it right by picking 220-229.

Skinner (24 vs. 31), Stempniak partly due to injury (3 vs. 11), and Faulk (8 vs. 21) were my biggest misses on the negative side last year.

Hopefully Novacane isn't right with his zero prediction this year.

Makes 235 total I believe. Although they will lose some to injury and some of those goals (Williams, Ferland, Faulk, etc.) could come with new teams after the TDL.

Svechnikov feels to me like he'll either get 11 goals or 25+. all the tools are there and he's got the right play style to adjust for higher competition pretty quickly. it's just a matter of can he play 70+ games and avoid injuries as he starts bouncing around with 30 year old veteran players instead of teenagers.

I'll go super negative and say 182. This happens after Aho gets a season-ending injury in late November, causing TT's goal totals to drop as well. With the only other scoring threat out of commission, teams are free to focus on Svech, causing him to put up only 13 goals himself.

The season will be notable, because the Canes will break an NHL (and possibly sports) record by not scoring a single goal in the month of January. That will change in February, after we trade for bits and pieces at the deadline, when one of the new acquisitions will break the 20-game shutout streak.

Waddell will commonly be found around the halls of the PNC, handing out little strips of paper with his "I don't believe scoring will be an issue" quote, allowing fans to choke him with it if they so choose. This idea will bring fans in droves, despite the losing season.

I know you are being saracastic (although I do think you probably are that negative), but if Aho goes down with a season ending injury in November, it won't matter if we have Skinner or not. Skinner scored 37 goals 2 years ago and the team scored 13 LESS goals that season than they did this past season when Skinner scored 24. Take Aho out of are line-up and we are f***ed no matter who we have.

So you're saying that calling up Andrew Poturalski wouldn't overcome that situation.

I don't know why you brought up Skinner. I already said I have no issue trading Skinner. I didn't like the return (not just the pieces, but rather getting nothing that helps the team immediately), but dealing Skinner was fine. He was starting to half-ass it, so they moved him before they had to pay him $7 million to half-ass it.

The post was just fluff. If I had to make a serious prediction, it'd probably end up looking similar to Tarheel's. Maybe a bit lower totals with regards to some of our new acquisitions, but around that same number.

I'd love to see Saarela play so well in training camp/pre-season to make it impossible to send him down. I think he has a big league shot. As a 19 and 20 year old, he was the leading scorer on his team in SM-liiga playing against men. He scored as many goals as Aho did in their draft+1 years (although he played 6 more games).

Really? Because 1) most of this board has been talking about how will we replace Skinner's goal scoring now that he's gone. 2) I assumed, correctly, what you wrote in bold and 3) Waddell's statement about goal scoring was one he said in response to the Skinner trade. Why would I not bring up Skinner in that light?

Well I'm also a Saarela fan, but I have some question as to where he'd play in the line up....unless, of course, Roddy truly rolls 4 scoring lines. Right now, one option for our lines today looks like:

Zykov/Aho/Teravainen
McGinn or Ferland/Staal/Svechnikov
Ferland or McGinn/Necas/Williams
Foegele or DiGiuseppe/Rask/Martinook

I'm not sure where Saarela fits unless he pushes one of McGinn or Ferland to the 4th line. It would be interesting to slot him into that 1st line as a "Finnish Invasion" line, again pushing McGinn or Ferland down to the 4th line and slotting Zykov next to Necas. As you can tell, I'm pretty high on Valentin (and think the org, at this point, is as well). Regardless, I do believe he's the guy they are hoping will chip in some of the missing Skinner goals.
