Android Text Alerts?

So my phone does this thing where if I send a text, set my phone down without locking it and the text app is still the active window it will not play a notification sound when I receive a new text in that active thread.
Maybe it's normal I've never had any Android before until this one.

But it's driving me crazy lol.

Basically I want it to play a notification sound for every single text is every circumstance, is there some setting I'm missing or some setting I screwed up?

Which messaging app is it? Most carriers include their own messaging apps. Go into that app's settings and look for notification settings.

Regardless, I recommend going to the Play Store and downloading and using Google's own Messages app, instead. I doubt that you'd have the same issue with that, but, even if so (and if you just happen to be using that already), there are lots of notifications settings in its settings, including one called "Minimum time between notification sounds."
