Agree, for a pro like Ladd, it can't be easy riding the buses after riding the planes in the NHL. A buy out would only amount to 667K of cap savings. I do recognize Bellows mentioned his mentorship in the AHL. But you don't pay a guy 5.5 to mentor young players, his cap space would be welcomed on the Isles with Pulock, Barzal, and Toews to be signed as RFA's. Also Martin up.
If Ladd were a good team player he’d retire.:sarcasm:

The earliest Ladd would ever willingly retire (before the completion of his contract) would be after his final Salary Bonus to be paid out July 1st 2022. There would only be 1 million left on his actual deal. Even then that's a lot to walk away from.

Tom Gordon pitched for the Royals , Yankees , Phillies , and a few other teams from the late 80s until about 2010.

Gordon was also the pizza delivery guy on Two and a Half Men

Tom was also the cat that chased Jerry the mouse but never caught him .

Hope this helps . LGI

Tom's restaurant was the diner on Seinfeld.

George Costanza was Jerry's little buddy.

The Skipper's little buddy was Gilligan.

Mr. Howell was Gilligan's castaway friend.

Jim Backus (Mr. Howell) was the voice of Mr. Magoo.

And lastly, little known fact...

Garth Snow is Mr. Magoo's long lost identical twin brother.

Here’s a trade that might work this offseason:

Ladd to NJD for Schneider.

After his bonus, Ladd will be owed 9mil for three years and Schneider would be owed 12mil for two years of REAL salary.

You can buyout Schneider for a cap hit of 2mil for four years. Compared to carrying Ladd’s contract that would be a 3.5mil cap hit savings for three years an extra 2mil cap hit in year four.

NJD can actually buyout Ladd’s contract for a slightly less real salary cost then Schneider. Only difference is that depending on which offseason they finalize the buyout, they would have 2/3 years of (4.8mil) followed by 2/3 years of a minuscule hit (333k). That might fit NJDs compete window better anyway.

Isles would still add pick and prospects as enticement. But avoid giving a first or top prospect.

LTIR is our only relief. Question becomes, do you actually hope for someone to suffer that type of injury. Not sure my conscience would allow it. It's just one of those unmovable contracts.

I would be very surprised at Ladd outright retiring. It reminds me of the Redden situation. Riding the bus for how many millions? Some guys just do not want to give up that money or hope of making it back to the NHL.

Would you?

If it were me, I'd buy a pimped out bus for the team and rent/buy a nice house on the water in Milford or Fairfield (near Bridgeport).

To say that's a hardship is a bit of a stretch.

Me, personally? I would find it hard to turn down that amount of money while playing any type of professional hockey.

The hardship for Ladd is that he's a former captain, and 2x cup winner who likely still thinks he has a shot at making it back to the NHL even if it isn't with the Islanders. You go from being a cup winner to having an injury riddled body and riding a bus with an AHL team. That is the type of stuff that messes with pro athletes.

Selfishly I hope the guy pulls it together and gets healthy enough to help the team, but realistically his legs are pretty shot and he can't keep up with the speed of today's game.

They get accustomed to a certain lifestyle and the AHL isn't that. You get nice flights, cushy hotels, good cities, nice meals, great trainers, etc. in the NHL. The AHL has a drop off on all of that. He also has a family, so it becomes hard with the moving side of things. He needs to be in Bridgeport right now, so he moves the family to Bridgeport. Then he gets called up to Long Island, stays up for a while, do they move back to the Island? What if he gets traded to a different city, that's another move. The disruption to family life at this point I'd imagine is the bigger concern. Having the kids move around and change schools all the time must be difficult, as is being away from your family.

I know this won't happen and there may be some rule against circumventing the rules but in an ideal world, the front office would go to Ladd and tell him that they will pay him an amount like $1.5M a year for a number of years (somewhere between 5 to 8 maybe) in some player development/scouting cushy role if he retires. See if he would bite at the stability and getting paid most or all of the $12M he will still be owed over a longer period of time . Even if not reality, especially for a team like the Isles, one can dream. (there must be some rule against this or the teams with deep pockets would do this with other players in Ladd's situation in order to get more cap space).

Yeah, teams can't do that. The most they can do is agree to terminate a contract I think.

Ladd is going to have to go to Robidas island. With his litany of injuries, I am sure Lou can find a doctor to sign off on the diagnosis and get him to LTIR. Then Ladd can hang around as a coach, scout, front office adviser, etc. or just go fishing every day and help coordinate social activities for the Isles off seasons.

If they agree to terminate the contract/retire and take a role within the org I think it’s okay. It’s the equivalent of Snow becoming the GM.

This would be a viable option. If Lou can get a diagnosis on Ladd that even remotely passes the sniff test. The Isles may have a Robidas, Lupul, or Clarkson LTIR escape.

If we offered something like Bode Wilde and our 2nd round pick to SEA in exchange for them taking Ladd in the expansion draft, and then maybe traded Leddy for a 2nd round pick, we'd have all of our picks and $10M or so in cap relief.

Ladd's at a crossroad right now. He either has to play himself into game shape and back on to the team or play himself into a significant enough injury that would warrant LTIR for the rest of his contract. The situation he's in right now is unsustainable for the rest of his deal. He could play it out for the rest of the season but I can't imagine him hanging out in BP for the next 3 years. And that's what will happen if the team doesn't think he can contribute.

I could see Ladd taking over for MM and MM signing a 2-way and playing most of the season in bport.
