No disrespect to Markov but he’s kind of old. He struggled a little 2 years ago...

Well if he's willing to be a 6th or 7th dman and sign 1 year at 1-1.5 millions to end his career here with 1000 games i don't see the problem. We are not winning anyway and Markov reaching 1000 games in Montreal would be cool.

If Markov had an agent 2 years ago instead of one now, he probably would've finished his career in Montreal.

Agreed. Chara took a base + performance bonus with the Bruins so Markov should of been OK with that too. Maybe Bergevin was a jerk in negioations but the strategy of offering Markov a base + performance bonus was something I support for the 38/39 year old.

Unlike Pleks, Markov can still be useful in a limited role, PP specialist, minimum ice time.
He's still a clear upgrade over Mete and Kulak and can mentor them at the same time. Wouldn't mind seeing him back for a couple of mil but he's not the #2 guy we're looking for to play with Weber full time, that's for sure.

Plekanec would've been useful last year as a 4th line C who could win faceoffs, kill penalties, help take some defensive assignments and chip in a few points.

Markov is definitely not an upgrade over Mete or Kulak, he'd basically be what Mark Streit was 2 years ago.

This is what Bergevin offered him last time but Markov turned it down. Bergevin had also said the bonuses were easily attainable.

I kept watching him in the KHL.

He's not a viable NHL defenceman anymore. Markov was/is my favourite Hab of all-time. I'd love to see him back next year for sure.

He's just not the same Markov. Even his shot and passing doesn't seem crisp, age has hit him hard.

Please sign him as a development coach though.

I'm a huge Markov fan, but even in his last few years in Montreal he couldn't keep up in the 2nd half of the season.
He may not need to, if he can give us a Gonchar-esque season it'd be more than worth. I'm just not sure if he can even give that

Signing him as a special teams consultant like Columbus did with Martin St. Louis would make a lot of sense.

I think both sides could of handled the negotiations better but that offer was the right strategy IMO. Lets hope Markov and his new agent are willing to take $1M base salary and lets say an extra $3M in performance bonus. He gets to play his 1000 games and we get to shelter his minutes and monitor what kind of game he has left. I think we could use him on our PP

If bergevin gave him 2 years contract instead of one, today markov were going back in russia after a nice career here. And nobody would talking about alzner

2 year deal is risky with the retirement factor of being stuck with the cap hit if they retire after the 1 year. You can't predict the future and a 2 year deal was risky

If we take Markov at his word during the press conference two years ago, he said he refused the one year deal because he was responsible for two boys who were starting school and he didn't want to move them to Canada for one year and then move back to Russia the next. Assuming he is still a passable NHLer why is he willing to do that to his sons today?

Maybe he wants to play out a Pleky contract or maybe he is looking for a Martin St Louis position with the Habs. Richardson has been a great D coach but I wouldn't mind having Markov as an offensive tactician. The question is can Markov do the job. He didn't like talking much and he didn't suffer fools very well.

Added this to the OP and updated the title with this info.

2 millions to Markov or 8 millions sleeping…..

Bergevin signed Steit, Hemsky, Semin and tons of other crap over the years that didn't worked out, that gave nothing to this team.
Worst case scenario, Markov becomes one of them…..not entirely sure i want that either but i would prefer to pay him to be in and out of the line-up than paying a guy like Peca or Folin.

AND….old or not, Done or not, i'm pretty sure Markov could still run a PP like he used to be. That could be a huge help.

Oh he has an agent now? If he did 2 years ago the negotiations may not have been botched since his personal feelings would have been detached an extra degree.

He would have been wearing the CH in 2017-2018 and then everyone could have seen he was basically done as a NHL player and we could have avoided 2 years of tedious discussions about how Bergevin messed up the left side D by disrespecting 40 year old Markov who would have magically fixed everything.

Waiting to see vids of his workouts on a Florida beach with his red lobster tan, before deciding. :sarcasm:
