He would be fine as a 3rd pairing D and I would be happy to see him back on the team. The problem is Bergevin has already stockpiled too many depth defensemen. Chiarot, Reilly, Kulak, Mete and Alzner are 5 NHL D for the left side, not to mention Olofsson, Leskinen and Ouellet. It would be ridiculous to add another guy right now, unless Alzner gets bought out somehow

Would love to see him hit 1000 but I don't think there's room for him in the lineup unless he's somehow found his prime at age 40.

Probably better than Chiarot.

So funny that the team was terrified of giving him that 2nd year so they gave Alzner 5 years instead and now had to give Chiarot 3 years.

Alzner was signed before Montreal and Markov parted ways. It wasn't they didn't want to give Markov that 2nd year and then they turned to Alzner. Their plan was to have both.

They had also traded for Schlemko before all of this. So their plan was to have an LD of Markov, Alzner, and Schlemko.

He was slow when we walked away the first time...but he was always a smart defenseman. I could see MB doing it though if only to garner some good vibes and get Marky to 1000. I mean...I'd rather have Markov on a 1 year deal than make a mistake on Gardiner for too long.

It's not much of a risk...feels very much like an MB move a la Semin, etc.

Not sure what respect has anything to do with it. Is respect calling the guy, listening to him and tell him no thank you. Or is respect not giving somebody's false hope? If we were done with Pleky, we are done with Marky.
Unlike Pleks, Markov can still be useful in a limited role, PP specialist, minimum ice time.
He's still a clear upgrade over Mete and Kulak and can mentor them at the same time. Wouldn't mind seeing him back for a couple of mil but he's not the #2 guy we're looking for to play with Weber full time, that's for sure.
