Anderson/Nilsson/Gustavsson/Hogberg/Daccord

Which, isn't really a problem. We are going to lose a valuable piece in the expansion draft regardless. We can protect the best or most valuable goalie.

Anderson and Nilsson are both UFAs before the draft. So that's something to consider.

I would sign and keep Nillson plus one of Gistavsson and Hogberg.

First off, goalies are voodoo - let's establish that right away. ;-). Having said that, it's not unheard of for a goalie to only start coming into his own in his late 20s. Hasek was 28 when he became the full time starter in Buffalo, and of course Tim Thomas was 31 when he finally made the league, and 32 when he took over as Boston's starter.

Bottom line - when a goalie is hot, don't mess with it. Keep playing him. As we saw last night, when you're getting goaltending you have a chance to win every time out. That's an amazingly confident feeling as a player. Conversely, when you don't trust your goaltending, it just kills the energy on your bench...

Same thing with lines and scoring: when a line is hot and scoring, "Let it be" as Paul wrote! Don't FXXX it up by being a smart coach.

For Immediate Release

Ottawa Senators goaltender Anders Nilsson, Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews and Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Nov. 10.

Nilsson stopped 96 of the 101 shots he faced, compiling a 3-0-0 record, 1.64 goals-against average and .950 save percentage to backstop the Ottawa Senators (6-9-1, 13 points) to wins in each of his three starts. Nilsson turned aside 32 shots in a 6-2 triumph over the New York Rangers Nov. 4. He then made 26 saves in a 3-2 overtime win over the Los Angeles Kings Nov. 7 and capped his week with 38 stops in a 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Nov. 9. The 29-year-old Lulea, Sweden, native has played in eight total games this season with a 4-3-1 record and ranks tied for sixth in the NHL with a .930 save percentage.

1. Anderson is a UFA this yr & 38 yrs old & should be moved by the trade deadline IMO & get whatever assets they can for him. They could always bring him back during the summer as a backup or as their new goalie coach.

2. Nilsson has another yr on his contract & his situation can be looked at next season leading up to next yr's trade deadline to see if he can be a legitimate #1 goalie in the NHL or whether to trade him too.

3. If Anderson is traded then Hogberg most likely would be the goalie who is promoted to Ottawa & his play can be assessed whether he can be the backup goalie during the remainder of the season & then next season whether he has #1 potential or backup potential or not.

4. If Anderson is traded & Hogberg is promoted, than Gustavsson becomes the #1 goalie in Belleville & Daccord is promoted to Belleville & fights with Gustavsson for the #1 job. Next yr Mandolese could be sent back to junior or sent to Brampton (ECHL) to start his pro career & Sogaard likely returns to junior for another yr.

5. If Ottawa is lucky enough to draft either Lafreniere or Byfield, then IMO they should target Askorov with their SJ 1st rd pick & FINALLY acquire an elite goaltender for the future of this franchise. I understand that most don't agree & would prefer a forward, but IMO great goaltending can carry a team deep into the playoffs. Lots of goaltenders have been Conn Smyth winners in the playoffs.

You forgot the most obvious one: Craig Anderson.

Anderson talks about how sports psychology changed things for him. Hopefully Nilsson can learn from him. Nilsson obviously has the physical tools.

Sounds like it had a ‘game changing’ effect in Paul as well. Mind over matter.

So that was a good trade to acquire him?

I assume you mean Nilsson. But you could have meant Anderson. :)

Yes it was a good idea to get a better player like Nilsson. WE could always trade him for the right picks and prospects. However, we need to have a longer term plan for building the roster via acquisition of players. The draft is where you get the top prospects, not from signing UFAs nor via trades usually. I would like to see 2 or 3 years of tanking to get the benefits of high draft picks and a lottery win or 2 that would set up this team for FYOUS. I do not trust Dorion and Melnyk to do that.

His next start he'll be amazing, then the start after that he gets pulled. It's pretty much guaranteed. It's like Anderson's good year, bad year. I guess it's the reason he's not a full fledged starter yet, although he looks good most of the time.

Is it too premature to think he could possibly be our #1 for the next few seasons?

He’s a year younger than Andy was when he joined the Sens. We also don’t really have anyone in the pipeline standing out at the moment.

He looks pretty solid with a penchant for the odd weak goal. We've got him this year and next which is plenty of time to evaluate. He's getting an opportunity and running with it and i suspect would be interested in staying here if things are working out
