Kinda makes me sad that everyone is piling it on Alzner.

He was an effective player in Washington for a long time and never ever took a game off. Blocked a lot of shots, won a lot of board battles and paid a heavy price for it.

He is not an effective NHL player and was not one in his final season+ with the Caps. I don't know why Montreal offered him that contract. What was he supposed to do, turn it down?

I hope he transitions into coaching. Players who had to work extra hard for every dollar and minute of ice time make good coaches.
Pretty much this. Alzner was once-upon-a-time a really good Dman for the Caps. Always looked steady, made safe plays, wasn’t easily beat wide because he kept good gaps. In many ways he was like a younger, more effective Orpik without the physicality. It seems injury and the pace of the modern game have left Karl behind. I too hope he finds a position in hockey after unseruptitiously being ushered aside in Mtl.

I think his main problem is decision making. You can overcome being slow with hockey IQ. But Alzner has zero hockey IQ. The decisions he takes on the ice are mind boggling. The other day he felt behind the net and after getting up his reaction to him being behind the play was to get one foot in front of his goalie and try to block a one timer shot doing a ninja move à la Karate Kid Crane Kick. Of course he screened his goalie and the puck went in. Any decent dmen would have let his goalie do the save and then try to clear the font of the net. Never try to correct a mistake by doing a 2nd one.

This has to be false and made up as Alzner wasn't on the ice for any of the goals against Boston or Buffalo and did not play for ? 5 games before?

But whatever suits your scenario. Feel free to make it up.

I love people who resort to baseless accusations as the main point of their argument.

I said it happened the other day never said it was against Boston.

Here's the goal :

Ok i thought it was not that many days ago but still not a reason to throw accusations without any proof.

Do do you even watch the Montreal's games ? he has Zero IQ and hockey sense.
All the games he played this season and last season were terrible.

Alzner for Lucic. Both players need to get the hell outta where they're at. Lucic has played well before under Julien and Alzner ... welp he can't be worse than the other options on the Oilers bottom pairing.

EDM could technically pick him up as they have Sekera on LTIR and have only used 500k of the savings. So in theory they could slide him in there with a demotion. It would be another “bold” move.....

has anyone in this thread outside of fellow hab fans actually watched alzner? he has the lucic syndrome. i won't say he's done, but he's not equipped for new NHL. He's slow and his decision making is worse because of the speed of the game.no question his confidence is shot. Is he done>? Maybe he's a solid 3rd pairing PK specialist on a team with a deep D that has lots of mobility. Not in montreal where julien is coaching a speed game that requires mobile puck movers. habs have too many alzner-type dmen. he just doesn't fit here. it was a terrible contract and i blame habs pro scouting dept for this... mellanby?

Much like your "alzner is always getting tripped" non-sense.
It's true. Alzner doesn't fall for no reason. Just to provide one of many examples. You can check it out yourself on NHL Live Games NHL Live Games Video & Streaming Schedule | NHL.com

I'm not able to do a screen grab but in the Boston vs Montreal game Nov. 24, 2018 see the 1st period with 1 minute 40 seconds remaining. Pastrnak #74 sweeps Alzner's leg out from under him. Alzner still moves the puck forward.

There are other examples like that if you choose to look. Someone who's skated for 25 years doesn't just fall for no reason. It's how the opposition plays him. Sticks in skates. A little trip here or there.

Alzner is just Montreal's current favourite whipping boy until he's gone and then it's on to hen peck the next or back to Bergevin. Rinse repeat

This is a really good example of Alzner alone battling two Golden Knights behind the net on a penalty kill. Look where the rest of the team is? Three of them standing still on the right side. Totally not even in the play. Alzner at least gives it his all. Niemi got sucked in too, already down on his knees and unable to make any stop.

When you have that little to give, it's easy to give it all.

Yes, I watch the games. As well as other teams. I've probably watched over 2,000 games in the last 20+ years. So I think I can see what is happening. Thank you for asking.
Last year the entire Montreal team was a dumpster fire. Team systems when you are trying to tank in order to obtain a high draft pick can do that.

This year Alzner has hardly played so in and out of games is not truely telling the real story. No consistent partner and playing both the left and the right side. It's easy to make someone look not as good as they are. I think he's done a great job in a difficult situation.

Alzner's hockey IQ has always been something that he's been known for. Hockey IQ is probably the last thing to go for a hockey player.

Huh?

He only played two games in that series.
Good point.

Something else that no one mentions about Alzner is his durability proven by his Iron man streak of 622 consecutive games.

Out with injury for Montreal defence this short in the season has had Weber, Schlemko, Mete and Juulsen still out.

Also Alzner rarely takes penalties.

Oh I got what you were going for. But when you're killing a penalty you can't just send bodies behind the goal. Shouldn't blindly do it 5-on-5 either.

So what's your point?

Alzner was doing his job against 2 Golden Knights. The other three Canadians were standing still to the right of Niemi.

What were they thinking? Karl's got this?
