Would it be worth having a pinned thread dedicated to alumni talk?

Mark Parrish has been great on the podcast with Staple. His stories about Bates, Jonson and Peca are great. I could see him taking Butchie’s spot one day.

Peca is among my favoite all time Islanders. Was sorry to hear he got financially fleeced in a scam. Seems like he bounced back nicely.

You can certainly have a thread but I don't think we'll pin it. We prefer to keep the amount of pinned threads on the lower side if possible.

Classic episode of No Sleep Til Belmont in the bonus this week. Staple tells a story about getting a call from Capuano who came after him for writing that the team was playing like they were trying to get him fired. Said he was trading F bombs with Capuano (who was told to call Staple by Snow) and that he got into it with Tavares and some of the other players at another point. Parrish talked about how Alan Hahn got into it with a teammate, but didn’t get into details as it sounded kind of messy.

Parrish also talked a bit about when he said the fans should stay home if they were going to boo. They made excuses for that, but said the fans have the right to complain.

On this week's subscriber-only No Sleep to Belmont, Parrish talked about when Webb, Cairns and Bates told Parrish they were becoming roommates (told, not asked.)

Talked about how friendly the team was, how Cerkawski tried and failed to cook eggs on a George Foreman grill, how they bought Taco Bell at a drive-through and the worker thought it was a prank because of how much they ordered. It was essentially a frat house.

He also talked about finding out that Brad Isbister was traded before Isbister knew, and that Isbister found out from a TV report before the team told him (all happened in a matter of a minute or two.) Said the team was dead quiet.

Also said that Rick DiPietro cried when Parrish was traded to LA and that the flight to LA was the worst experience because it was so lonely.

Reminded me. Was in bookstore the other day. Saw book by CuJo.

Whole chapter dedicated to the series back in 02. Man...they hated us as much as we hated them. Spoke about webb a lot...but also admitted "we weren't Angels either" or something to that effect

That was one of the nastiest... I didn't like Toronto ever, even though I'm 50 miles away. Being around so many arrogant Leaf's fans is a challenge, but those times... I was walking around with a grin.

I listened to the Athletic's Penguins podcast with Sean Gentile and Rob Rossi because they were covering Fight Night from back in 2011. The whining and homerism is insane. To their partial credit, they admit that Lemieux was on questionable ground criticizing the violence when cutting a paycheck to Matt Cooke, but man is their take weak. Watch the highlights on YouTube while listening, and you can see how of their remembrances are.

Fantastic oral history of Fight Night on the Athletic. Most of the big players from both sides comment on what happened.
'Nobody was concerned where the puck was that night':...

Joe Vitale, Penguins forward: I got called up. My first game ever was against the Kings in Pittsburgh. My second game is here (at the Coliseum) against the Islanders. So I’m in the minors, I’m not really paying full attention to what’s been going on here. We get to New York, I’m getting ready, my second game and (Penguins coach) Dan Bylsma comes into the room and says, “Hey guys, whatever happens tonight, we stick together.”

And I remember thinking, “That’s a weird thing to say. Why would he say that?”

Caught a magazine in the bookstore the other day -- 10 best games or something like that. Easter Epic was one of them.

Anyone know that Mason had a broken skate for the Trottier goal which tied the game up and throughout the balance of the 3rd period? He said Trotts may not have even scored that tying goal if he didnt have a broken skate. Had no idea.

the Refs were in horrible shape -- as they had no break -- they were lying down on the floor between periods and nursing their feet back to health. Caps ordered Pizza in throughout the evening cuz they were hungry. Isles locker room was much less serious than Caps.

Last bit Ill share is that Smitty was the backup here-- After the game ended, where he would typically hightail it back to the lockerroom during the handshake, he found Mason, and told him something like "that was the best goaltended game I've ever seen" (paraphrasing here).

You forget about that, but that's right - they go non-stop. They skated over 2 games straight.

On the Fight Night story, you can tell that those guys reliving that game still hold it in some real high place in their heart. I'll always consider Michael Haley a true Islander for life....even if he's tainted by the Rags stank these days.

As for all the guys seeing MAF laughing after the DiPietro fight, I would love to see what he looked like after the second game.

Also telling, someone mentioned that they wanted to stay in the game as they had Tavares on the bench. He would never even think of getting involved. Guys like Sidney Crosby, OTOH, have dropped the gloves when they needed to. But not John the Dainty. His programmers have strict instructions to disable the fight function in the circuit boards.

Long post, so you can't say I didn't warn you ahead of time....
I always like the 'where are they now?' threads, instead of former Isles that are still playing I thought I'd try something a little different, retired Islanders involved in the game. As always, corrections and additions are appreciated.

I actually really liked Muller up to the trade, he was pretty good in New Jersey and his first years in Montreal. I've forgiven Muller but I still wish he handled things better yet I understand his views on the state of our franchise. Too bad he didn't channel his energy towards playing and giving it a shot here instead of being a distraction all around. Letting Ferraro go was a real bummer, he was the perfect 2C here. Was happy to see him sign with the Rangers and thought he would do well there...he did in his brief stay before the Rangers shipped him to the Kings in that stenchy trade.

I was probably around 14 years old when that trade happened, I remember being disgusted how this adult was acting like a baby.
