Talent Analysis from HF:

Talent Analysis

He is talented offensively, but he tends to shy away from physicality and is not particularly reliable defensively.

So JR threw Alt in on a deal for an AHL/ECHL bordernline non-physical, non-2way player? Alt may have never amounted to anything so it's not a huge deal, but still, seems odd. I hope there is more to this.

Pither is a center, 6' 186# and had a tremendous season, his last year in the OHL with 67games 36g 58a 94p 39+/- and 18ppgs.

Hasn't done anything since then though.

This makes no sense at all. An NHL backup and a C level prospect for a guy who is likely to never play in the NHL? Did Alt decide he wants to play football again or something?

So basically JR wanted to get rid of Boucher and had to include Alt to make somebody want to take him.

Oh my this is brutal. Alt may have been struggling this year but he was a rock for Minnesota last year. Just makes no sense.

Alt's the only player involved in this trade that's worth a damn thing IMO.

I thought of that, but Boucher is making $1M for 1 more year. It's not like Kaberle where it was a lot of money for a long time. Waive him if you have to.

Makes no sense. We give up two low-med. quality players for one low quality player. Unless JR is planning on signing someone right now and had to get rid of contracts, it makes no sense to me.

Are the Canes just bailing on Alt? It's not like Pither has proven anything.

Even that doesn't make sense though. They are going to have a back-up goalie no matter what so instead of Boucher, it's now Ellis. They took an AHL contract back in Pither and Alt isn't under contract.

Weird.

Alt is in college so he doesn't have a contract. I really don't know the rules though for having college prospects.

Well I read yesterday somewhere that Boucher's family was staying in Philly, so I'm assuming that is why he was traded there. With his injury proned history, maybe Philly wanted another player included in the deal. We didn't need Boucher, and Alt wasn't proving anything. I see this deal more as making room for other players (i.e. Ellis) on the 'Canes.

That was my initial reaction as well. Alt seems like an awful big piece to throw in to make that happen. I guess the organization was no longer high on him.

Yeah, for every great move JR makes, he makes a massive head-scratcher to counter it. Now, this isn't the same magnitude of screwing up as say the Corvo contract. But all in all, this trade make no sense. Trade a raw 21 year old defenseman prospect and an aging goalie for a 23 year old ECHL'er who put up less than .3 PPG in the AHL. :shakehead

JR hates prospects and back-up goalies, so this makes sense.

Hopefully this was the "trade that may look funny but it's not because I'm so smart" trade he was talking about.

Was just thinking about that quote. I just can't think of a reason to dump Alt.

Really not sure on Alt. He's been having a bad season with Minnesota but the talent is there. He's always been a project pick that was going to need all 4 years in college and a couple in the AHL before he was ready. Only thing that makes sense is if Canes brass didn't think he could do anything for us with the logjam we have on D and that it was time to bail.

Waiving him might mean he ends up in Edmonton or something.

The only way this deal makes a little sense is that JR wanted to do right by Boucher and get him to Philly. It took the Alt/Pither swap to get their buy-in.

Basically a minor-league trade combined with a waiver.

You had him until he graduated, so its not like they needed to do anything with him.

I wonder if the trade was really Pither for Alt, and Rutherford just said "you guys just want to take Boucher back, too? We don't want him"

I guess JR wanted to get rid of these American prospects without the speed skating mentality.

I think that Mcbain and Pitkanen are staying put.
