Two great nicknames for a pair of tough guys from the Birmingham Bulls of the WHA:

Frank "Seldom" Beaton (614 PIMS in 153 games)

Gilles "Bad News" Bilodeau (570 PIMS in 143 games)

Birmingham was the "Bullies" not Philadelphia. In 77-78 the Bulls racked up 2177 PIM in 80 games. The Flyers never cracked 2000.

i like this recent nickname

i guess Robert Esch got a big bundle of sticks that came in with the REsch a little too close together, hence, his teammates began referring to him as "Chico"

But that's not too original. "Chico" Glenn Resch's nickname. It is funny that the players call him that, but it's not a great nickname alone.

doug "killer" gilmour

my personal fave
Neither is that. Dave "Killer" Hanson played in the NAHL (a forerunner to the ECHL,) the AHL, IHL, WHA and NHL in the 1970's and 80's. There was also the the "Killer" Carlson character in Slap Shot, which was based on Hanson.

Here is a good list of Hall of Fame members with good nicknames:
Frederick "Cyclone" Taylor - my favorite
"The Dominator" Dominik Hasek
Lorne "Gump" Worsley - I agree, a great nickname
Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion
Harry "Rat" Westwick
Harry "Punch" Broadbent - a classic
Hector "Toe" Blake - a classic
Francis "King" Clancy - a classic
Yvan "Roadrunner" Cournoyer - a classic
Cecil "Tiny" Thompson - I didn't even know his real first name
Bobby "The Maggot" Clarke - makes Bertuzzi look a Lady Bynd winner.
Maurice "Rocket" Richard - so good that others have taken variations:
Henri "Pocket Rocket" Richard - The Rocket's brother
Pavel "Russian Rocket" Bure - Russia's answer to the Rocket
