You know what? Surprised nobody tried Lemieux on Gretzky's wing - they were fantastic together in the Canada Cup. It also lets you bring Beliveau. Screw those aliens ********:

I love the chemistry on the 2nd line - Messier is basically a better version of Sid Abel. Both the 2nd and 4th lines can be used in shutdown roles. The only line with chemistry I don't like is the 3rd line, but I had to include all 3 players somehow.

Mario Lemieux - Wayne Gretzky - Jari Kurri
Ted Lindsay - Mark Messier - Gordie Howe
Bobby Hull - Jean Beliveau - Maurice Richard
Frank Nighbor - Bobby Clarke - Bill Cook

Doug Harvey - Bobby Orr
Nicklas Lidstrom - Raymond Bourque
Denis Potvin - Eddie Shore

Patrick Roy
Dominik Hasek

Spares: Jaromir Jagr (can play on the 1st line for the ultimate skill line, dropping Kurri to the 4th for an ultimate shutdown line. I like the balance of the current lines though), Red Kelly (can play any position or any role if need be). Edit: If it's a "big game," I would probably prefer Lafleur to Jagr, but Jagr does have the chemistry with Mario.

I would say it is not bad to have in the team Hart T. winner who could play center or wing or defense (on Norris Trophy level) with excelent skating ability providing high-end offense and defense at same time. Perfect fit to any team. Every coach´s dream.

I think you're talking about Fedorov, and the assessment of his play as a defenceman is way off. Fedorov always gets overrated when people are discussing "all around" players because people think he was an elite defenceman when Bowman used him that way. Fedorov was certainly passable as a defenceman and possibly could have been elite had he been trained as a defenceman for a few years, but he was definitely not Norris level.

Wouldn't Bure & Gretzky get in each other's way at center ice when the other team had the puck in their zone?

I don't like Bure with Gretzky either. I in fact wouldn't have Bure at all, he just doesn't work on a team of all-time greats. He almost needs to be the offensive leader which he would not be here.

I would probably have Gretzky with Kurri and Howe.

To put Tretiak in goal you would have to think he's among the top-2 goalies ever. I see no argument to support that.

To put Fetisov in, you'd have to believe he was better than Potvin and/or Bourque and Lidstrom. I think he is the next-best after them.

To put Kharlamov in, you'd either have to sacrifice defense and toughness on the 3rd/4th line and put him in a role he can't fill, or you'd have to think he's better than Lindsay. I do not.

I appreciate the Soviets just fine, it's just that this is one single all-time team.

I was just throwing a name out there...again I don't claim to be knowledgeable enough to do this.

That being said I have trouble believing that a team that was virtually universally recognized as the best hockey team in the World for several years didn't have one single player who would crack the top 20.

We played the aliens already. We won. Henderson scored the winner.

If the aliens are coming here, I guess that would make us the home team. Good. Because I'd be nervous about sending Roy to another galaxy to play a game seven on the road.

Trying to build lines with good chemistry make it kind of tough to include both Bobby Hull and Maurice Richard on the same team...

Bobby Hull - Wayne Gretzky - Cyclone Taylor
Ted Lindsay - Mario Lemieux - Gordie Howe
Mark Messier - Jean Beliveau - Maurice Richard
Bryan Trottier - Bobby Clarke - Stan Mikita

Doug Harvey - Bobby Orr
Ray Bourque - Eddie Shore
Denis Potvin - Nicklas Lidstrom

Dominik Hasek
Patrick Roy

Lemieux - Gretzky - Howe - THE line
Bobby Hull - Beliveau - Rocket - 2nd scoring line
Messier - Trottier - Bossy - 3rd scoring line
Mikita - Clarke - Lindros - Checking line

Orr Lidstrom
Bourque Coffey
Harvey Potvin

Hasek
Roy

PP Mario Gretzky Howe Orr Coffey
PK Trottier-Clarke Lidstrom Bourque :naughty:

The first line is astounding. Howe adds physicality and defensive presence.
Second line is a scoring machine.
Third line has chemistry and grit with Trottier and Messier
Fourth line I add Lindros for the sheer intimidation. He'll be the ultimate enforcer and needs to be with Clarke on his line!

Defence would be astounding offensively. Defence has Lidstrom to cover for Orr. Bourque to back up Coffey and Harvey to cover for Potvin. So some perhaps the best offensive D ever get an astounding partner to cover for them if they get caught up the ice.

Hasek in net, Roy to back up if Hasek loses his marbles.
