Or state. Although I'm pretty sure Massachusetts and Minnesota are the only two states that you could actually make a team for. You probably have to mess around with positions when it comes to Quebec and Ontario.

Saskatchwan:

Sid Abel-Bryan Trottier-Gordie Howe
Doug Bentley-Max Bentley-Theo Fleury
Bert Olmstead-Elmer Lach-Brian Propp
Harry Watson-Bernie Federko-Clark Gillies

Eddie Shore-Brad Mccrimmon
Fern Flaman-Lyle Odelein
Bob Baun-Ron Greschner

Glenn Hall
Johnny Bower

Quite the top line and decent depth overall. That defense was tough to choose after Shore, Mccrimmon, and Flaman. Nice goaltending.

Lalonde and Potvin are from Ontario.

Quebec obviously has plenty of other options though.

Bernie Geoffrion, Pierre Pilote, Joe Malone, Sprague Cleghorn, etc could all be on the team.

Claude Lemieux? ;)

The Ontario team is easily superior to any other all time national team, and wouldn't be completely outclassed by an all time team from the rest of the provinces. The all time teams for the Atlantic provinces, even if you put them together, would hardly match up with any other province or major national team though.

i think team quebec could compete. team ontario obviously has the depth to field two, maybe three, elite teams, but team quebec has the high end talent to at least keep up. between beliveau, richard, lafleur, geoffrion, mario, bossy, dionne, plus harvey, bourque, and some other high end d-men, and two of the top five goalies ever, that's quite a team.

i don't have it in me to put together an entire BC team, part of it is because i'm unsure of the criteria. yzerman was born in BC but grew up near ottawa, so i wouldn't count him. meanwhile, rod brind'amour was born in ottawa and raised in BC and scott niedermayer was born in edmonton but raised in kamloops. hall of famer joe primeau was also born in ontario but raised in BC.

brett hull is greyer area. he was born in ontario and lived in chicago and winnipeg as a kid, but he moved to north vancouver in his early teens and played junior in penticton, BC before going to college in minnesota.

off the top of my head: sakic, neely, glenn anderson, recchi, kariya, the courtnalls. the best goalie i can think of is andy moog. not great. defensemen are also tough to come by. barry beck?

Quebec is definitely close. They do have an edge in net, but I wouldn't say the difference between Roy/Plante and Dryden is a game-changer. Ontario having Gretzky AND Orr is an edge that's hard to overcome, and Ontario's D has a clear edge IMO despite Quebec having a damn good D of their own. Forward talent is pretty close at the top ends, but Ontario has better depth IMO.

It's interesting that Ontario dominates this matchup at LW, while Quebec clearly has the edge at RW.

Man, they need to make a video game where you can play with every player in the Hall of Fame or something. I love this stuff.

Tiny Thompson was born BC but grew up in Calgary, so I think Moog might be the best tender who's actually from BC. Cesare Maniago was from BC as well by the looks of it. And Olaf Kolzig might have kinda grown up in BC or something? I've never really figured out his life story.

Like you were discussing earlier, I think it just makes sense to list where players grew up instead of where they happened to be born. It does get tough with a guy like Brett Hull, or now Duncan Keith (born in MB, grew up in Ontario until he was 14, and then moved to BC).

Jimmy and Joe Watson are a couple pretty good defensemen from BC. And Scott Niedermayer would count as BC since he grew up there. Along with Beck, that's a decent start. Guys like Scott Hannan and Willie Mitchell have had really solid careers. And Weber and Seabrook will probably be there someday, although it might be a little early yet (or maybe not).

The gap in defencemen is pretty large in Ontario's favour. Ontario's #6 defenceman (Park/Coffey) is quite a bit better than Quebec's #3 (Pilote I guess). Quebec definitely has a team that can compete, but I can't imagine them beating Ontario in a seven game series for instance. Give Quebec Saskatchewan's best players and you would have two pretty equal teams.
