(Mods - I know I'm posting a lot of data, but I pre-approved this with Bear of Bad News).

Here are nine tables with data about NHL playoff statistics. To my knowledge, none of this has ever been published before (aside from a few samples that I've leaked over the past few months).

Tables 1-3 show the number of times a player has led their team in goals, assists or points.

Tables 4-6 show the number of times a player has finished in the top five (playoffs-wide) in goals, assists or points.

Tables 7-9 show which players have scored the highest percentage of their teams' goals, assists or points.

An important disclaimer - this looks at offensive statistics only. It doesn't consider defensive play, it doesn't look at who stepped up and scored/assisted on crucial goals, etc. I think it's better to have this data than to have nothing - but context needs to be considered.

All data is compiled in "good faith". This means that I've taken reasonable steps to make sure that both the source data and formulas are correct - but this is a hobby, not a job, and it's possible that some errors have crept in. If anything looks wrong, let me know.

I've accounted for ties. For example, in 1981, Bossy is in sole possession of first in scoring. Trottier and Payne both get credit for 2nd, Smith and Potvin both get credit for 4th, etc.

I have data from 1917-18 (the inception of the NHL) up to and including the 2016-17 playoffs. Tables 1-3 and 7-9 cover the entire history of the NHL. For tables 4-6, I've shown data from 1926-27 onwards (when the NHL was consolidated with its rival leagues - otherwise a couple of assists can translate into a top five finish and that feels wrong).

Some comments on a few recent greats:

Crosby looks great across the board. He led his team in scoring four times, he's finished 1st, 2nd, and 2nd in playoff scoring, and only 7 players have contributed a higher percentage of their teams' offense. The biggest weakness? Out of the five times his team made it to the Eastern Conference Finals (or beyond), he was their top scorer only once.

Malkin's numbers are a bit worse than Crosby's, but still excellent. It's impressive that he was the Pens' leading scorer on three of their five longest runs. Still, as I said in the first post, we need to look deeper than just the offensive statistics. Crosby generally faced tougher match-ups, and was a better defensive player, and this pushes him ahead.

Kane's numbers also look great. He's the only player not already in the Hall of Fame who has four seasons in the top five in playoff scoring (3rd in 2010, 2nd in 2013, 5th in 2014, 1st in 2015). Obviously he'll get there one day.

Ovechkin's performance is hard to read. He's already among the all-time leaders when it comes to leading his team in goals (T-9th) and points (T-11th). He contributed a historic percentage of his teams' offense when looking at goals (behind only Neely, Drillon and Lemieux) and points (behind only Gretzky, Lemieux and Hull senior). Of course, his team never escaped the second round. Still, taking into account his importance to his team, I think it's generally been a case of the Capitals letting Ovechkin down, not the other way around. (Yes, he was bad in 2017 - no argument there).

Note in the last set of tables that a player's numbers can be hurt by long stretches of play before or after their prime (the average I present covers their entire career). Jagr is a good example. Over the course of his long career, he contributed to 30.2% of his teams' offense - good but a bit underwhelming. If you focus on 1994 to 2008, his contribution skyrockets to 42.5% - behind only Gretzky and Lemieux all-time. It`s true that Jagr never had a signature playoff run, but he was scoring at a historic pace in the playoffs all throughout his prime.

The biggest surprise? Zach Parise led his team in playoff goal-scoring six times, as much as Lemieux, Gretzky and Bossy.

This thread has been updated for 2018. A few observations:

Marleau has now led his teams in goals in the playoffs nine times - tied with Brett Hull for the most ever.

Ovechkin has led his teams in goals in the playoffs seven times - tied for fifth all time, along with Howe, Beliveau, Yzerman and Sakic.

Getzlaf has led his teams in scoring in the playoffs nine times - tied for third all time (behind only Gretzky and Howe, tied with Yzerman and Oates).

Crosby tied for 5th in scoring. He's now been in the top five in playoff scoring four times in his career (on par with Esposito, Bossy, Kurri, Gilmour and Kane, among others).

Crosby and Ovechkin have now contributed the 5th and 7th largest percentages of their teams' offense, respectively. (The only played who have contributed more than Crosby, over 50 games, are Gretzky, Lemieux, Bobby Hull and Sakic - while Federko finishes just above Ovechkin). Crosby increased his performance in this category in 2018, while Ovechkin slightly decreased his career average - but obviously he's happy with how his season turned out.

This is Kucherov's first inclusion on the list (he didn't meet the games played threshold before). His numbers - and obviously this is early in his career - are in the same ballpark as Forsberg, Bure, Iginla and Malkin.

Here's one all-time playoff statistic I've collected: most playoff series played while scoring atleast a point-per-game during the series.

First here's the statistic when point-per-game pace is calculated by the games played by individual (if player played just one game in a four game series while scoring a point in that game, he's being credited with a PPG series). Every player with atleast eight such PPG series is listed:

Code:
39/42 - Wayne Gretzky
36/47 - Mark Messier
27/40 - Jari Kurri
23/40 - Steve Yzerman
21/32 - Jean Beliveau

Seeing Patrick Marleau of all players on top of the first table you posted is kind of hilarious. Zach Parise being up there is funny too. He's only scored more than 4 goals in a playoff twice.

It's an indictment of the teams they played for that they lacked other scorers to help out (New Jersey, Minnesota, San Jose and Toronto, where a 38-year-old Marleau scored more than any young star Leaf).

Note: Marleau has the most playoff goals among active NHLers, having played longer but also on less successful teams: Marleau has more playoff goals than Crosby and Ovechkin despite having waaaay less team success. His 72 goals is significantly more than Parise's 35 (though no other non-cup-winning player has scored more than either of them.

In the 2006 playoffs Marleau scored 9 goals and 14 points in 11 games (losing in the 2nd round to Pronger's Oilers) when no other Shark had more than 4 goals (yet the captain was blamed wrongly for the loss by people who really couldn't have cared less about California teams).

This entire thread has been updated for 2020.

Ovechkin led the Capitals in goals this postseason. He's accomplished that feat eight times - only Brett Hull and Marleau have done that more.

Kane led the Blackhawks in points. He's done that eight times. He's tied with a bunch of great players (Ovechkin, Sakic, Fedorov, Gilmour). Only five players (Gretzky, Howe, Yzerman, Oates and, surprisingly, Ryan Getzlaf) have done that more often. Crosby, maybe surprisingly, has only done this six times (yes, injuries and Malkin).

The middle three tables (showing any players with 3+ years in the top five in goals, assists and points) are tough to crack. Kucherov very nearly makes it (he's now finished 1st, 3rd, and 6th in scoring - so he doesn't qualify).

Speaking of Kucherov - look at where he ranks on the last table. He's scored or assisted on 36.8% of his team's goals. Only four players in playoff history (minimum 50 games) have done better - Gretzky, Lemieux, Bobby Hull, and Sakic. That's pretty good company. Obviously Kucherov is early in his career and this number will almost surely decrease, but it's a great start. (I didn't post Draisaitl's numbers, as he didn't meet the 50 game threshold, but he's over 40%, meaning that only Gretzky and Lemieux have contributed to a greater percentage of their teams' offense).

(In terms of the question of how I dealt with the qualifying rounds - the NHL has decided, in its infinite wisdom, to count these as playoff stats. So I've taken the published stats as is, even though I don't think it makes sense to include a one-time qualification round with the rest of the postseason stats).

I was wondering how you would treat that. I went with elimination round statistics only (so I treat Tampa Bay, Dallas, and the New York Islanders as 4-round teams, and Vegas and Vancouver as 3-round teams), which means my Kucherov and Vasilevskiy statistics were depressed a little.

This thread has been updated for 2021. A few observations:

Ovechkin led the Capitals in goals and points this postseason (tied in both categories). He's now led his team in goals 9 times - tied for the most in NHL history (with Brett Hull and Marleau). He's also led his team in points 9 times - tied with Yzerman, Oates and Getzlaf, and behind only Gretzky (14x) and Howe (10x).

Kucherov has now led the playoffs in scoring in consecutive seasons, and also has a 3rd place finish from 2015. That matches (and in fact slightly exceeds) the top five finishes for Forsberg, Malkin and Fedorov.

This is obviously an arbitrary statistic, but Kucherov now has four seasons in the top six in playoff scoring. Only 21 players in NHL history have more than this. Only a small number played most/all of their career after 1980 (Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Sakic, Bossy, Crosby).

Nathan MacKinnon has scored or assisted on 41.1% of his team's goals over the course of his career. Among players with a minimum of 50 games played, only Gretzky and Lemieux have participated more in their team's offense. Kucherov is 5th in this category, Ovechkin is 7th, and Crosby 9th.

This thread has been updated for 2022. A few observations:

Ovechkin led his team in playoff goals for the 9th time in his career. This ties Brett Hull and Patrick Marleau for the all-time record. He also led his team in playoff points for the 9th time (something only topped by Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe).

I didn't notice this until now, but last year, Zach Parise led his team in playoff goals for the 8th time. Believe it or not, that tied him for 4th all-time (with Bobby Hull and Maurice Richard). Pretty good company for Parise.

Here's an arbitrary stat - Nikita Kucherov has finished in the top six in playoff scoring fives times. From NHL consolidation (1927) to today, only 22 players have done this. From expansion (1968) onwards, this has only been done by eight players - Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Lafleur, Bossy, Sakic, Crosby, and now Kucherov.

Another surprising stat - Jake Guentzel has scored 19.1% of his team's goals over the course of his career. With a minimum of 50 games played, that actually ranks him ahead of Hull, Ovechkin and Richard, and he's immediately behind Lemieux. Obviously that will decrease as he plays more games, but it's still an amazing bit of trivia.

Connor McDavid doesn't qualify for the last three tables (because he hasn't reached 50 playoff games). But, 37 games in, he's assisted on 27.4% of the Oilers' goals (which would rank him 2nd, only behind Gretzky). And in terms of overall point production, McDavid scored or assisted on 44.4% of the Oilers' goals, which would rank him right between Gretzky and Lemieux. Truly remarkable.

Nikita Kucherov has scored or assisted on 38.5% of his team's goals over the span of his career (which ranks him behind only Gretzky, Lemieux and Hull - and ahead of Sakic, Crosby, Howe and many others).
