#33 Marty McSorley,D/RW-6'2"235
Mr illegal stick is a good defenceman who plays a blue colar game.He is a gamer who never allows the opposition plant themselves in front of the goal crease. He adds some muscle and some versatility by selecting at defense and right wing
Since debuting in the NHL in 1983-84, defenceman Marty McSorley has developed into one of the toughest customers in the game. His ability to rush with the puck and utilize a quick shot from the point has made him a prominent member of several NHL clubs.

In 1985, he was picked up by the Edmonton Oilers and was an important physical deterrent when the club dominated the NHL through the regular season. The next year, he experienced the euphoria of a Stanley Cup win and contributed four playoff goals in addition to muscle. In 87-88, McSorley scored 9 goals and played in a variety of situations for the Oilers when they repeated as Cup Champs.

McSorley was part of the monumental trade of Wayne Gretzky to the L.A. Kings in Aug 88. He spent 5 yrs providing offense, grit, and a winning attitude on his new club. In 93, he was a key factor with ten points as the Kings reached the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in franchise history

Over the years, he reached the 20-goal mark eight times and was valuable team leader who often played his best hockey in the post-season. He came by his love of the game honestly as his father, Ralph, was the executive producer of "Hockey Night In Canada" for 19 years.Plays a consistently rugged brand of hockey. He is a ferociously competitive warrior with good skills.Always leads by example, plays with a spirited hustle, battles for the puck alongst the boards, drives to the net scores big goals when it counts most and can play any role.

His best years came with the St. Louis Blues in the 1980s.Rick played exemplary two-way game while becoming one of the top penalty killers in the league. His excellent work helped the Blues come within a game of reaching the Stanley Cup finals in 1986. In 1990, Meagher's value was recognized when he won the Frank J. #27 Gilles Meloche,G-X4B-5'8"170
A goalie often hailed as the "most technically sound goaltender in the league"Gilles Meloche was a talented netminder who appeared in nearly 800 games during the 1970s and '80s. He was a true workhorse who saw action in at least 40 games 13 times in his career. His best years came with the strong Minnesota North Stars clubs in the early '80s.

The young backstopper welcomed the trade that brought him to the defensively weak California Golden Seals. During the 1971-72 season, he created a stir by registering four shutouts and a 3.33 goals against average. He continued to provide goaltending heroics for the next few years including the franchise's two-year relocation to Cleveland.

Following the Barons' merge with the Minnesota North Stars, Meloche started to experience winning. In 1979-80, he backstopped the club to 27 wins and led them to a quarterfinals victory over the Montreal Canadiens which ended their four-Cup dynasty. The next year, he combined with youngster Don Beaupre to form one of the best goalkeeping tandems in the league. Meloche took part in the NHL All-Star Game and won eight playoff games during Minnesota's run to the finals.

Meloche continued to work his share of games for the North Stars through the 84-85 season. In 82, he won a bronze medal when he represented Canada at the World Championships and helped Minnesota reach the semi-finals in 1984.
- Legends of Hockey Bio

"One night at the Oakland Alemeda County Coliseum the Canadiens were bombarding Seals goaltender Gilles Meloche, who must have faced 50 shots, but didn't score on him until the 3rd period when Cournoyer got a breakaway. The fans saluted Meloche with a long, emotional standing ovation. It was the only time I saw a home-team goalie cheered after he had just been scored on. The game ended 2-2. I'm sorry Meloche didn't win." - Dick Irvin, My 26 Stanley Cups

#11 Mark Messier,C/LW-6'1" 205
Mark Messier's nickname, "the Moose," is a tribute to his size, strength and determination. A player renowned for his leadership abilities and one of the all-time leading NHL scorers, Messier emerged from the great Edmonton Oilers teams of the 1980s to become a hockey superstar. He was a powerful skater who combined playmaking skill and a goal-scoring touch with the toughness necessary to survive and thrive in the corners. Six times his teams sipped from the Stanley Cup and on two occasions Messier took home the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player.

Like Gordie Howe, Messier is credited with being the most complete player of his generation. He was a power forward, a two-way left winger and sometime center with talent and overwhelming power and size and an unpredictable mean streak. Messier acquired his multidimensional game during a childhood filled with hockey in his home town of Edmonton as he grew upwatching his dad play in the minor leagues.

He was a very intimidating force on the ice who made his opponents freeze on eye contact like deers caught in headlights. He was a goal scorer a playmaker a checker a fighter a leader on and off the ice. What he is best known for is as a winner. He made the oilers win and he was always expected to score the winning goals in tight games in hostile arenas

We have the best player in the world out. said sather once while gretzky was hurt, "and the second best plays like he is the best"

Edmonton provided a stage to to establish messiers reputation as awinner but NY would immortalize it.

Mikhailov was surprisingly "Canadian" in his approach to hockey. The Soviets prided themselves on being the opposite of North American hockey, yet Mikhailov is remember as a guy who loved to mix it up and go to the corners, digging for loose pucks. He had a knack for scoring important and clinching goals, more often than not they were by banging for loose pucks and scoring "garbage goals." He was the leader of many great Soviet squads and always gave 110%.

#21 Stan Mikita,C – 5’9â€, 169:
Stan was a slick playmaker with a gifted scoring touch, and although he wasn’t the smoothest skater around, he was good at finding and exploiting holes in the enemy defense. Apart from his all-world offensive abilities, he was also a diligent and untiring defensive force, who also used lightning-quick reflexes to cement a reputation as master of the draw. “Stosh†was one of the most clever and successful forwards in league history, and his longevity and consistency were nearly as impressive as his raw talent. Doug was not your average hockey player. He made seamless switches from defense to forward and vice versa, with no drop in performance. "Diesel" was an exceptional skater, always one of the games fastest. His mobility, puckhandling skills, superior speed, and heart for the physical game, gave him a versatility that earned him multiple all-star game spots at both defense and left wing. Not only did he possess a booming shot but also his strength was extraordinary. He was strong on his feet and quick with his hands. He never looked for fights but could handle himself when challenged. He was never one to shy away from the rough play and was actually motivated by it.BM67

He was Jean Beliveau's choice to take the "C" after Richard retired and Moore often filled in all forward positions playing for injured team-mates. Moore had passion, could hit, could fight, was a solid skater and a sure stick-handler, and had a beautiful way of making touch-passes on the fly. A hustling, courageous player whose robust style of play earned him the nickname "Digging Dickie." #7 Howie Morenz,C-5'9"165
There were great players before, but Howie Morenz is generally regarded as hockey`s first bonafide superstar. He was billed as "the Babe Ruth of Hockey" and fans in all cities filled the arenas when he came to town. His trademark was his blinding speed and skillful stickhandling which were without equal at the time. In the late 70s when Guy Lafleur was in his prime, several oldtime fans said that he was the closest style-wise to Morenz that hockey had ever seen.
His accomplishments are impressive: 3 MVPs, 2 scoring titles, 3 Stanley Cups; but his true legacy was his connection with the fans. When he passed away in 1937 from coronary embolism (many called it a broken heart over his career being over) over 20,000 fans filled the Forum and the streets outside the building to pay their final respects. With the exception of Rocket Richard, no player was as beloved by his fans as Howie Morenz. In 1950, the Canadian Press voted Morenz the best player of the first half of the 20th century.

#6 Ken Morrow,D-X4B-6'4"205
The first player to win the Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal in the same year. After Morrow started playing with the Islanders, he quickly proved he was an NHL-caliber player. The team's front office felt so confident with him in the lineup that they traded veterans Bill Harrison and Dave Lewis to the L.A. Kings for Butch Goring, the last player the Isles needed to put together a Cup-winning team.

Morrow was never a great goal scorer. In his best season with the Islanders, he accumulated only 19 points from one goal and 18 assists, but he made a significant contribution to the game in many other ways. In the 1983-84 playoffs, for example, he registered only three points, but two of them were crucial to the team's success. One was the winning goal in overtime that eliminated the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs; the other was an assist on the game-winning goal by Mike Bossy in the fourth game of the semifinals against Montreal.

In all, Morrow played 10 yrs in the NHL and was a member of the New York Islanders dynasty teams of 80-83 that won the Cup four straight times. Plagued by knee problems late in his career, ken was forced into early retirement.

#5 Vaclav Nedomansky,RW-6'1"210
One of the top international players of the 70s who scored a stunning 369 goals in 419 Czechoslovakian league games in "Big Ned"

"He was the ideal goalscorer to be found. Awareded 4x as league's best scorer. He remains the best sniper of the National team's history with with 163 goals scored. Three nominees to the World Championships all star teams, he was also awarded as the best forward of the WC 1974. His professional supreme career lasted the whole 20 years, including a dozen in Slovan Bratislava. For years he proved himself as an excellent forward with outstanding physical skills and dreaded shots. This brought him the nick "Big Nedo" from journalists in Canada. Although he didn't play professionally until 30, he caught up to make himself a very high credit in the world of hockey." - Slovak Hockey Hall Of Fame
Scouts and managers in the NHL were drooling over the 6'2" and 210 Ibs Slovak. He had all the tools necessary to become a star in the NHL. He not only had the size but he also possessed the best wrist shot in the world at that time. On a couple of occasions his wristshot was clocked at 90 + MPH, which was harder than most players slap shots.

A marvellous career that had spanned for over three decades came to an end which saw "Big Ned" score close to 800 goals. Had he been able to play in North America during his prime then he could very well have challenged Esposito's then record 76 goals in a season.
- Summit 72
That level of intensity made Nedomansky a success in North America, where he wasn’t afraid to mix it up. "Defensemen around the league have just been given a king-sized headache," New York Rangers GM John Ferguson said when Nedomansky signed as a free agent with the Wings in 1977.

"Big Ned is an outstanding acquisition," noted Wings legend Gordie Howe, who played against Nedomansky in the WHA. "He does what Phil Esposito does in the slot – takes up space, gets the puck and snaps shots on goal.

#15 Jim Neilson,D-X4B-6'2"205
A 2nd team all-star defenseman in 1968. Defenceman Jim Neilson played the body well and moved the puck up ice to his forwards with consistency. He played over 1,000 games and was an underrated member of the fine New York Rangers teams of the early 1970s.

Neilson looked solid as a rookie paired with Doug Harvey in 1962-63 and became a fixture on the New York defence for a dozen seasons. In 1967-68 he played superior defence and scored 35 points, which earned him selection to the NHL second all-star team. "Chief" scored a career-high ten goals and 44 points the next year then helped the Blueshirts become one of the league's elite clubs. In 1968-69, he was paired with rookie Brad Park and was credited with making a huge difference in the youngster's game

#6 Frank Nighbor,C-X3-5'9"160
Perhaps the best all-around player of his day, Frank Nighbor skated and passed well, had a great shot, could stick handled through entire teams, take face-offs with the best, and checked back. An outstanding two-way center throughout his career, Frank Nighbor played a vital part on some of Canada's mightiest professional teams and his exemplary conduct on the ice earned him the respect of fans and players across the country. Nighbor was considered the master of the "poke-check," which he used to full advantage against the game's most dangerous scorers. A smooth skater, he worked superbly with his wingers as a crafty and unselfish playmaker. By the time Nighbor gained his fifth etch on the Cup, one with Vancouver and four with Ottawa, he had already won the Lady Byng Trophy twice, the Hart Trophy once, and was named to the PCHA First All-Star squad way back in 1915. He had led the NHA in goal scoring and total points in 1916-17 and led the NHL in assists twice. Nighbor even had an eleven-game goal scoring steak in 1917. He had used the poke-check so effectively that despite his brilliant offensive skills, many fans believed he was an even better defensive player. Nighbor spent few minutes in the penalty box throughout his career, attesting to the gentlemanly manner in which he played the game while still performing at a high level on a yearly basis.

#14 Ulf Nilsson,C-X4B-5'11"175
A slick playmaking center a 3-time WHA all-star and the MVP of the 76 AVCO Cup playoffs
Nilsson was one of the players who introduced Swedish hockey to Canada when in 1974 he made his debut with the WHA's Winnipeg Jets, where his partner in offense was another great Swedish forward, Anders Hedberg. Both were often among the league's best scorers and, thanks to the Swedish duo's excellent performance, the Winnipeg Jets twice won the Avco Cup.

The legendary Bobby Hull, partnered with Hedberg and Nilsson, was able once again to demonstrate his extraordinary ability and set his amazing scoring record of 1,000 goals. The very fact that such a unique international trio existed deserves mention in any hockey encyclopedia.

Nilsson made his debut with the Swedish national team at the 1972 Izvestia Cup Tournament in Moscow. The next year, again in Moscow, he took part in his first World Championship along with Swedish aces Ulf Sterner and Stig Goran Johansson.

At the 1976 Canada Cup, he played exceptionally well for Tre Kronor and in a game against the USSR scored the decisive goal against Vladislav Tretiak. Nilsson was also included on the NHL All-Star Team pitted against the USSR at the 1979 Challenge Cup tournament.

The most memorable game for Nilsson was the one between the Winnipeg Jets and the USSR in 1978 in Winnipeg, which the Canadian team won 5-3. In that game, Hull scored three goals, Nilsson scored two, and the Nilsson-Hull-Hedberg trio won their own game against one of the world's best lineups, the Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov trio

Reg was a winner at both the amateur and professional levels throughout his career. His consistent scoring and natural skill granted him status as one of the game's top left wings. Despite his free spirit, he was a brilliant stickhandler who played hard and earned the favor of fans everywhere. Reg formed one of hockey's great early lines with right winger Cecil "Babe" Dye and center Corb Denneny. Noble was a crowd favorite at the old Mutual Street Arena and one loyal fan used to wind up a siren whenever Noble stole the puck from an opposing attacker, sending the rest of the crowd into a frenzy. Noble's poke-check to thwart the enemy became nearly as famous as his goal-scoring exploits.
Jack Adams knew of Noble’s leadership qualities, having teamed with him for four seasons in Toronto. Adams was a rookie in 1917-18 when Noble led the Toronto Arenas to the Stanley Cup, scoring 30 goals in 18 games. Noble won a pair of Cups in Toronto, serving as both player-coach and captain and added a third with the Montreal Maroons in 1925-26, where his experience helped settle a young squad. A gritty competitor, Noble suffered a fractured skull when clipped by the stick of Ottawa’s Hooley Smith in a 1925-26 game, but was back in the Maroons lineup after missing just four contests.
He was A fireplug of a player at 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds, Noble made the switch from left wing to defense with the Maroons and was a stabilizing influence on the back end. His ability to lend a helping hand was also evidenced on the scoresheet. He at one time was nhl career assists leader. He was the last original NHLer to be an active player in the league

Right-winger Terry O'Reilly epitomized the "lunch bucket" crew of the Boston Bruins in the 1970s and '80s. A hard-nosed grinder who fought for every square inch of ice, he scored 204 career goals and was an emotional leader of his team.

The tenacious winger hit the 20-goal mark four times and helped the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup final and semi-finals three times each. He often formed an effective team with centre Peter McNab and various left-wingers such as John Wensink and Al Secord

#12 Adam Oates,C-5'11"190
The old adage about hockey being more mental than physical is proven by the career of Adam Oates. He started as a slow skater who didn`t use his size much, that may explain why he was undrafted, but he had vision, creativity and the gift of natural hockey smarts. His one physical strength was a pair of soft, fast hands; he was excellent on faceoffs, but far better at setting up plays. If you were on his line and got open, he`d get you the puck. If you couldn`t get open, he`d draw the defenders away to get you open. His style was very subtle, which may explain why he was always so underrated. As Jacques Demers said "You don`t notice him, and then - boom - the puck`s in the net."
Oates became an elite player when he was traded to St. Louis, playing on a line with Brett Hull. The two close friends were opposite personalties: Hull was flashy and charismatic while Oates was quiet and modest. As a result, Hull received all the media attention and awards while Oates was usually an afterthought in the fans eyes. He was traded to Boston and promptly made Cam Neely the beneficiary of his playmaking. His hockey sense enabled him to still be an effective player into his late-30s and early-40s. In 2001-02, he became the oldest player (39) to ever lead the league in assists. He was twice the veteran leader on teams which made improbable runs to the Stanley Cup Final (Washington in `98, Anaheim in `03).
He is 6th all-time on the NHL assists list, but many claim he is in reality second only to Wayne Gretzky among the greatest passers of all-time. He is the only player in NHL history to centre two different players to 50 goals in under 50 games.

Ogrodnick played seven and a half seasons with Detroit, where he was an NHL First Team All-Star in 1985, after he finished fourth in league goal scoring with 55 behind only future Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri and Mike Bossy and went on to represent the Red Wings at the NHL All-Star Game on five separate occasions (1981, 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1986).

Driven by his intensely competitive nature, “Dirty Bertie†became one of hockey’s best left wingers with a reputation as one the game’s best physical players. He was a bashing kind of player who dove into the corner with a zing, and was one of the best along the boards. Bert was also a fine defender, and had the regular duty of shadowing Gordie Howe and other stars. Although he wasn't known as a scorer or point-getter, Olmstead twice led the NHL in assists, did set an NHL record for most assists in a season with 56 in 1955-1956, a record that wasn't broken until Jean Beliveau collected 58 five years later. He also scored eight points in a game, tying a league record, but most of all he was known for his leadership qualities, for getting the most out of his teammates and inspiring those around him to play better. Bert was a 2 time all-star, and a key contributor on 5 Cup winners.

He was the 1st rushing defenceman. He had unprecedented speed and balance on his skates, masterly control of the puck, and a deadly accurate shot. He revolutionized the sport with his scoring ability and playmaking from the blue line. Other defenders had been offensive threats, but Orr dominated with explosive energy and on-ice genius. More than just statistics, Orr had the ability to control the game, to take over. He had the speed to float away from defenders and also to recover should he lose possession or get caught on a rush. Often, odd-man rushes in the other team's favour were reversed by his effortless strides. Not only did he score and pass, he fought when needed, defeating his opponent more often than not, and could play a physical game. Orr also impressed with his defensive abilities. He blocked shots, made checks and moved opposing players away from the net. BM67NHL Totals 657 270 645 915 953 Playoff Totals 74 26 66 92 107

#29 Mike Palmateer,G-X4B-5'9"170
Made headlines in Toronto and became an instant fan favorite when he said "your hunt for a goaltender is over" to Maple Leafs general manager Jim Gregory upon his call-up to the parent team in 1976.Won his first NHL start, which was also his first NHL game
Mike Palmateer tended goal from the pee-wees to the Toronto Marlboros, right under the noses of Maple Leaf management but It wasn't until early in the 1976-77 campaign that he was brought to Maple Leaf Gardens for an extended stay. Suddenly, fans, analysts, and the club's management were all struck by the little fireball between the Leafs' pipes.
Some described him as a leprechaun in goal pads while others claimed he was brash and overrated and carried a chip on his shoulder. But whether people liked him or not, they couldn't help but be entertained by his dynamic exploits in the crease. He could make saves like a vaudeville dancer falling to the ice and then in an instant, be right back on his feet, ready for the next attack. He was colourful, cantankerous, and cocky while playing his daring game close to the edge.

From 77 to 79, with Palmateer in goal, the Leafs fortunes began to rise up from the depths of ineptitude. During the playoffs of 1978, he was a standout as the Leafs ousted the up-and-coming Islanders from the playoffs. But in 80, Mike engaged in a contract dispute with the Leafs. He wanted a three-year deal while the club would offer only two. As a result, he was traded to the Washington Capitals.
In his first season as a Cap, Palmateer was slowed by a series of nagging injuries that included a pulled hamstring, ankle ligament damage, and bone chips in his wrist. Year two got even worse as his action-worn knees began to give way
His career was indecline because of bad knees and as a result, he was forced to hang up his pads at age 30 in 84.
Nicknamed "The Popcorn Kid" because he ate popcorn before every game.Set NHL record (since broken) for assists by a goaltender in one season with eight in 80-81. Was forced to give up coaching in 01 when his troubled knee began giving him problems again and required surgery. Named Toronto amateur scout on June 27,02.

# Lester Patrick,D-X2 D - 6’1â€,180 :
Lester was a perfectionist. He worked long and hard to become a great defenseman. He was the game’s first rushing defenseman and a dangerous scorer. His exceptional passes benefited the powerful Montreal Wanderers as they captured the Stanley Cup in 1905-06 and defended their title in 1906-07. He was a perennial all-star rover and defender and a team leader for 21 seasons. He came out of retirement twice, including one legendary appearance as a goalie that helped the Rangers win their first Stanley Cup. BM67
As a player, he was one of the top rushing defensemen of his day and a team leader. He was the first defenseman credited with scoring a goal

He returned to Montreal to play a year with the Westmount club before joining the powerful Montreal Wanderers in 1905-06. He was an instant success and helped his new club dethrone the Senators as Cup holders that same season. Patrick helped the Wanderers repeat as champions the next year. His exceptional passes benefited the likes of Ernie Russell and Cecil Blanchford. - HHoF Bio

If anyone did more to advance the game of hockey than Lester Patrick, he must be hiding somewhere. And that is precisely why The Silver Fox and his contributions as a player have been overlooked by many talent appraisers.

It is fascinating to note that a number of Patrick's most glorious moments as a player occurred at a time when most observers figured him for washed-up. He decided to retire and concentrate on frnot office duties in Victoria in 1921, but a year later two defensemen on his Cougars' club were seriously injured so Lester retrieved his skates and took his position on right defense.

"From the start," one of his opponents commented, "he was a sensation."

The Cougars, who had not won a game in seven starts, won 19-5 and Patrick was never better. He personally won two games, scoring a goal to win an overtime game against the Saskatoon Sheiks and scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Maroons. - The All-New Hockey's 100

"He was a perennial All-star rover and defender for 21 seasons. He played in 205 top-level games during a career that spanned from 1904 to 28. He captained eight clubs and was on the Cup-winning side as a player, coach, or GM six times." - Ultimate Hockey

"Born in Drummondville, Quebec, Patrick was one of the first true superstars of the game. As a rushing defenceman, he won Stanley Cups in 1906 and 1907 with the Montreal Wanderers. He was a pioneer—before Patrick, no defenceman ever regularly joined the offensive rushes and attempted to become a threat to the oppositions goalie. He grandfathered the role of offensive defenceman that would make the likes of Bobby Orr and Paul Coffey famous." - Oilers Heritage

was one of the classier figures in hockey history, and one of the sport’s most prolific builders. Under Patrick, smooth and precise pattern passing became the Rangers trademark and the foundation of the team’s winning system. With hard, clean play and innovative tactics, the Rangers became known as "the classiest team in hockey". Babe Pratt said, “Lester was the greatest coach a team ever had when you were losing. #11 Marty Pavelich,LW-5'11" 170
If the Selke Trophy for best defensive forward had existed in the 1950s, it`s a safe bet that Marty Pavelich would`ve won it at least 4 or 5 times. He wasn`t much of a skater or a shooter, but more than made up for it with his worth as a checker and penalty killer. He was always assigned the task of shutting down the top scorers of the day like Richard, Bentley and Mosienko, and was better at it than anyone at the time. Pavelich attributed his success to studying those players, recognizing their habits and using that knowledge to anticipate their next move and prevent it before they made it.
His point totals were nothing to get excited about, but the other Wings never took his contributions for granted. Gordie Howe called Pavelich the heart and soul of Detroit`s 1950s Cup-winning teams. Jack Adams absolutely loved Pavelich as a player and claimed his line was in fact the real reason for Detroit`s success. Unfortunately, Adams affection for Marty disappeared due to Pavelich`s close friendship with Ted Lindsay, who Adams despised for starting the NHLPA. Rather than being faced with a trade or banishment to the minors, Pavelich retired at the age of 29 and never regretted it. He is currently a member of the Hockey Hall Of Fame selection committee.

#11 Gilbert Perreault,C-6'1"180
One of the most naturally gifted forwards in NHL history, Gilbert Perreault dazzled fans and the opposition defenses with his famed end-to-end rushes. He was the first building block in place when Punch Imlach began assembling the Buffalo Sabres in 1970. Throughout his nearly 17-year career that was spent entirely with Buffalo, Perreault was consistently one of the game's most entertaining figures. His laid-back and shy personality kept him from gaining the fame of some of the other stars of his era.

The Buffalo Sabres acquired the first pick in the 1970 Amateur Draft when coach and general manager Imlach won a spin of the wheel over expansion cousin Vancouver. Perreault was the obvious choice, and he lived up to his advance billing by establishing rookie scoring records of 38 goals and 72 points in 1970-71. He easily outdistanced runner-up Jude Drouin of the Minnesota North Stars in the Calder Trophy voting. In his sophomore year, he scored 26 goals and 74 points while being chosen to play for Canada in the 1972 Summit Series against the USSR.

Although he was in the latter stages of his career in the 1980s, Perreault turned in four straight 30-goal seasons between 1981 and 1985. He starred as Wayne Gretzky's linemate at the 1981 Canada Cup, and he was playing some of the best hockey of his career with nine points in four games when he was forced out of the tournament with a broken ankle.

Following the trade of Danny Gare to Detroit on December 2, 1981, Perreault was named Buffalo's team captain, a position he held until his retirement in 1986-87. On April 3, 1982, he became the 16th player to register 1,000 points. Perreault scored his 500th goal against Alain Chevrier on March 9, 1986. After playing 20 games the following season, he retired with 512 goals and 1,326 points to his credit. Perreault was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.

On the contrary from most Soviet players, Petrov wasn't a good skater. He didn't have that fluid skating style that many of his teammates had. He was a vital playmaker of the legendary Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov line in Team USSR and Red Army Club. Petrov established himself as a sound 2-way forward. He was a very fine powerplay and penalty killing player. His skill set included slick playmaking, incredible chemistry with his wings, top level 1-on-1 mastery and an extremely powerful and accurate slapshot that led Petrov to many scoring titles. In defense, he was known for outstanding physical play equal to the level of the best Soviet blueliners. Petrov won the scoring title in the World Championships four times. Petrov still holds the record for most goals, assists and points in one tournament (1973). He was also a four time All-Star in the World Championships. Petrov also won the Soviet league scoring title 5 times. He's the last Soviet player to have scored over 50 goals in a season.

His book, The Art of Goaltending, was the first of its kind and solidified his place in the game as not just a great stopper but also a man who truly understood hockey and wanted to have an influence on how the game would be played in the future. He was a reflex goalie with a lightning-quick glove-hand, and he perfected a stand-up style of goaltending that emphasized positional play and staying square to the shooter. He was also an exceptional skater - the best on the Canadiens, in fact. Such speed allowed him to roam out of his nets to stop errant passes or to fire the puck up-ice to a forward.
He was a 7 time all-star, and won the Hart Trophy in 1962. His 6 Stanley Cup wins, 10 Finals appearances, and 7 Vezina Trophies are all records for goaltenders. Yet, when Plante was asked to cite his career highlight, he chose an exhibition game. On December 15, 1975, at the age of forty-seven and out of hockey for a year, Jacques Plante was chosen to play for the Montreal Juniors of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in an exhibition contest against the Soviet Union. After only a week’s training, Jacques shut the door on the Soviets and earned his exuberant junior team a 2-1 win against a clearly frustrated Soviet squad, the first time the Soviet Union had been defeated by a junior team
In 1981, Plante was asked what his most satisfying experience in hockey, and he said that it was an exhibition game against the Russian national team in 1965. In the first year of a temporary three-year retirement (a decade after his dominant string of Vezinas), Plante played brilliantly for the Montreal Junior Canadiens, leading the club to a 2-1 upset victory. "During the game I said to myself, 'What am I doing here? I could get slaughtered," Plante chuckled. "It was a game in which I had more pressure than any other game. It wasn't an ordinary game - it was a country against a country, and the Russians were the best team in the world at the time. After the game, (Russian coach Anatoli) Tarasov said, 'Jacques Plante is the best goaltender I've ever seen.'"

#5 Denis Potvin,D-6'0" 205
He surpassed all expectations and became the first NHL defenseman to score 1,000 career points, all while functioning as the cornerstone of the franchise's four consecutive Stanley Cup championships from 1980 to 1983. Potvin's wealth of natural talent allowed him to jump into the offensive rush while serving as a tough physical presence in his own end of the rink. He was one of the most complete blueliners to ever step onto the ice. A less discussed facet of Potvin's game was his mean streak. Opposing forwards learned quickly that they were better served avoiding confrontations with one of the NHL's lesser-known tough guys. The leadership qualities demonstrated by Potvin, along with his exceptional talent at both ends of the ice, placed him in a category reserved for only a handful of NHL defensemen

In his prime.Felix was confident cunning and incredibly quick across his goal crease. His reactions were excellant and he had the poise of a 10 year vet. Often compared to Patrick roy and for good reason Felix is a butterfly goalie who snaps his legs closed on five whole shots. He remains in the and relies on his cat like reflexes.Very strong on first shots - seems to smother rebounds. Excellent on low shots.
In his early years with the Leafs, Potvin was a workhorse who, in his first big-league campaign, carried his club to the semi-finals where they eventually lost to Wayne Gretzky and his Los Angeles Kings. By the time he'd completed his six-year run with the Blue and White, Potvin had more games played and wins than all other Leafs stoppers except for Turk Broda and Johnny Bower. He set a club record, leading the league in games played with 74 during the 1996-97 season. During that campaign, he faced more shots than any goaltender in league history. #2 Walter 'Babe' Pratt,D-6'2"190
Hart winning defenseman in "Walter "Babe" Pratt who was a funny and outgoing man off the ice, keen on jokes and always good for a laugh, but he was considerably tougher with his hockey equipment on. Over a long career in leagues across North America, he proved consistently that the best defense is often a good offense. He was a defenseman who kept the puck deep in the other team's zone, sometimes deep in their net, and goalies on his squads could be sure their goals-against averages would drop when he was at his best. His leadership and ability are backed up by his remarkable winning record, from the National Hockey League to junior, as his teams won 15 championships over his 26 years in the game." - Hall of Fame Bio

"Pratt was a defenseman who could rush the puck and score goals in the manner of latter-day blueliners such as Bobby Orr and Denis Potvin. He had a flair for the dramatic and the ability to satisfactorily conclude a project he had begun." - The All-New Hockey's 100

Pratt would hop freight trains in Winnipeg to play for the famous Kenora (Ont.) Thistles. He nailed down a defense job on the New York Rangers' 1940 Stanley Cup winner and, teamed with defenseman Ott Heller, the two were on the ice for only 17 goals against over a 48-game schedule.

A Hart Trophy winner with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1944, Pratt set a new standard for defensemen with 57 points in 50 games, a record that stood for 16 years. - The Top 100 NHL Players Of All Time

"In 1943-44, he led all defensemen with 57 points in 50 games - the best total ever by a defender and a mark that would stay in the books for 21 seasons. When Pierre Pilote broke the record with 59 points, he had played in 20 more games than Pratt." - Hall of Fame Bio

"Walter (Babe) Pratt, a fellow that almost defies discription, a laughing man of six-feet-four who was a wonderful puck-carrier and excellent passer. He didn't hit hard but he had an unusual knack of sticking out his rear end, sort of sideways, and tipping the attacker off his feet." - When The Rangers Were Young, Frank Boucher

#10 Joe Primeau,C-X3-5'11"153
During the 1929-30 season, Primeau's pro career finally took flight when Leafs coach Conn Smythe put the 23-year-old centre on a line with a pair of 18-year-old rookies, Charlie Conacher and Harvey "Busher" Jackson. The Kid Line was born. The three young players - all superstars, Stanley Cup winners and Hall of Famers in the making - complemented each other's style perfectly.- HHOF

A testament to Primeau's playmaking ability was the fact that Jackson won a scoring title while Conacher twice led the league. But as Joe revealed, it was chemistry as much as talent that made the line work. In 31 the Leafs moved into a new rink, leaving the Mutual Street Arena for the palatial Maple Leaf Gardens. That first season, the team won the Stanley Cup, led by the Kid Line.- HHOF

Is very intimidating because of his combination of size and skating ability. Has a good touch from in close and sound two-way skills. A big man up the middle in one of the league's best forwards who is not necessarily the best at any one thing in particular
In Harford, Primeau was finally free to become more of a front-line warrior. By the time the Whalers transferred to Carolina, he had established himself as a strong skating giant with soft hands. In more recent years, he has been characterized as one of the league's best forwards who is not necessarily the best at any one thing in particular.

After three seasons in the Hartford/Carolina organization, Primeau was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyres in the summer of 1999. Prior to joining the Flyers, Primeau suited up Canada's Olympic Team at the 1998 Nagano Games. Upon his arrival in Philly, Primeau has fit in nicely, playing the tough, well-balanced brand of hockey that Flyers fans have come to appreciate.

During the 03-04 season, Primeau was instrumental in leading the Flyers to the Est Conf Final, while reaching the 900-game and the 600-point plateau

Using a hunched over skating style, this winger would score big goals and make plays while playing a dogged two way game. His tireless work ethic and ability to get open are his greatest assets offensively. He also receives high marks for a clean but tough physical game. Provonost's work in the corners, backchecking, and play in traffic are the intagibles that make his star shine brighter. His leadership qualities on and off of the ice are also very good.

#3 Marcel Pronovost,D-5'11" 180 -
Pronovost could skate, score, make plays, check and defend his end of the ice as well as any NHLer. A forward as a youngster, Pronovost displayed his selflessness by switching to his club’s blueline brigade. He turned pro in 1949 and his big break came when Gordie Howe’s near-fatal head injury in the 1950 playoffs forced Detroit coach Tommy Ivan to move Red Kelly up to the forward line. Pronovost was called up to fill the void on defense. He played so well in Detroit’s Stanley Cup win that veteran Jack Stewart was dealt to Chicago in the summer. With his skill, Pronovost easily might have attained more points, but chose to play within Detroit’s defense-first team concept. Pronovost played in 11 all-star games, was a 4 time all-star, and a 5 time Stanley Cup winner.

#11 Bill Quackenbush,D-5'11" 180
He excelled at both offensive and defensive aspects of the game. During 14 seasons, he was among the NHL's elite rushing blueliners. More significantly, he was a superior defender in his own end who relied on positioning and discipline rather than physical intimidation for his success. Consequently, his penalty minute totals were remarkably low considering his role on the ice. He managed to go 131 consecutive games without drawing a penalty. To many observers, he was the prototype of efficiency and finesse in defensive zone coverage. Quackenbush was also considered a master at diffusing any forward's attempt to generate offense from behind his opponent's net. Quackenbush was a five time all-star, and the first defenseman to win the Lady Byng Trophy.
By the late 1940s, he'd evolved into one of hockey's top blueliners. Three times Quackenbush was placed on the NHL's First All-Star Team and twice he was selected to the Second Team.

Pat Quinn,Coach-X3
As head coach of the Flyers he lead them too two successful seasons in first and second place in the Campbell Conference. The Flyers recorded an NHL record 35 game winning streak under Quinn, who went on to sign a five-year contract with the team in 1981. But to the amazement of most Flyers fans, he was fired in just the second year of the deal. Quinn responded by enrolling in law school, continuing to draw his Flyers paycheck and keeping abreast of NHL activity by watching games on TV.

Quinns style of coaching emphasising offense, speed, puck-movement, and puck possession.

After being let go from the Flyers, Quinn wasn't finished with controversy in the coaching department. In 1987, back in the coaching game with the Los Angeles Kings, Quinn was suspended from the NHL for several months because he had accepted a $100,000 signing bonus to become president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks while still under contract with L.A. The Canucks were also fined by league president John Ziegler for paying Quinn the bonus, as were the Kings for not reporting the deal promptly.

Nevertheless, Quinn coached 11 seasons in Vancouver, leading the team to a narrow loss to the New York Rangers in a seven-game Stanley Cup finals in 1994 before coming back to the Maple Leafs for the 1998-99 season. He quickly made his presence felt, telling fans and reporters he had definite plans for his new team, one that had been a little flat in the goal-scoring department in past years.

Vancouver was playing that "free-flowing" hockey out West and everyone marvelled at how it contrasted with the trap-happy hockey being played in the East? As Marc Crawford once said, "That's just Pat Quinn hockey".

Quinn certainly became a big hit in his early days with the team he once played with, leading them to their first playoff appearance since 1996 and their third trip to the conference finals in the 1990s. Quinn also led the team to a club-record 45 wins. He finished the season as runner-up for the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year and during the off-season was named general manager of the Leafs as well. A short time later, he was named coach of Canada's Olympic entry for Salt Lake City in 2002. He was named coach of Team Canada for the 2006 Turin Olympics

05-06 was the 7th season where the leafs were coached by Pat. The vultures had started to circle as Pat and the Leafs finally looked like they may be ready to retire as a non contending team. The Leafs of 05-06 were hand cuffed by bad Free Agent acqusitions. Luckily after Allison Kahanov and Belfour went on the Injured reserve list something happened to the new leafs team. They started to win after speedy youngsters were given more playing time. Under Pats toutiledge the leafs surged at the end of the season getting 16 of a possible 18 points going down the stretch.

Here is pats record with Toronto. It is worth noting that Quinn hadn't coached a non-playoff entry since 1987 when he was behind the Los Angeles Kings' bench.

#5 Alexander Ragulin,D-X2-6'1" 218
Ragulin was the perfect defenseman for the NHL. He was big and very strong, as well as very good at moving out opposing forwards from the slot. When Ragulin put that "bear hug" around a player it wasn't much anybody could do. His weakness was his skating but he made up for that with very good positional play. He had a heavy shot but it was primarily his defensive play that was his strength. Ragulin was often portrayed as a caricature in Soviet newspapers. Often as a fortress, as someone who was "impossible to destroy". He was very seldom in the penalty box despite his physical play.

#10 Craig Ramsay,LW-X3-5'10" 175
Craig was one of the top defensive forwards and penalty-killers of all-time
"Craig Ramsay's long career in a Sabre sweater was replete with big goals in key situations; unfortunately, Craig was frequently overlooked in terms of recognition for his considerable contributions. However, knowledgeable Buffalo fans grew to appreciate the Rammer's quiet excellence, and became accustomed to his cerebral play. Craig eventually developed to one of the leagues premier defensive forwards and top penalty-killers, laboring night after night against the NHL's foremost offensive threats in situations where success in preventing goals depends more upon brain than upon brawn." - Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame

"Craig was an intense competitor who did a lot of hard work that went unnoticed by the average fan, but to his teammates he was invaluable. He showed up night after night shuting down the opposition. The fact is that he has the 4th longest consecutive game streak in NHL history. He played 776 straight games between 1973-83. Also worth noting is that Craig only had 201 Pim's in 1070 regular season games. He was also a +328 during his career. Never being a minus player during his 14-year career, which is quite remarkable given the fact that he was matched against the oppositions star players on most nights." - Sabres Alumni

"The Seventies - Best Shadow - Craig Ramsay was nicknamed "Boris" by his peers because he played hockey like one of the many well-drilled Russian stars. Ramsay was a valuable part of the Buffalo Sabres into the 1980s, a master when it came to checking or positional play" - Ultimate Hockey

"Craig Ramsay is one of the most underrated players in the league. Game in and game out, he's one of our best, and I'd miss him more than anyone else on the team." - Punch Imlach, Sabres GM

"Hey, anybody would be happy to have a guy who does as thorough a checking job as Ramsay does, makes no mistakes, and gets you more than 20 goals a year for nine consecutive years." - Scotty Bowman, Sabres GM

He scored four points in six matches while playing chiefly a defensive role, and his overall skill and calm temperament impressed the Soviet players and coaching staff.

#1 Chuck Rayner,G-X4B-5'11" 190
A Hart winning goaltender in "Bonnie Prince Charlie" A superb skater, it was not unusual to see Rayner carrying the puck down the ice. "(Eddie Shore in Springfield) always told me you have to have balance on your skates and you would just find yourself moving out to get the puck." Although his dream was to be the first goalkeeper to score a goal in the NHL, he did not achieve his dream - but it certainly wasn't through a lack of effort. "I got to the blueline against Toronto one night. They had pulled Broda for an extra attacker late in the game. I stopped the puck and shot it down the ice. It bounced off the boards and suddenly, it started going straight for the empty net. Well, you could have heard a pin drop in Madison Square Garden, the people were so quiet. But at the last moment, it swerved and missed going in by just a couple of inches," Rayner reminisced. He did score against an opposing goaltender while playing during the war. "I was on a Navy team during World War II. We were playing an Army team in Vancouver. It was a rough game and at one point, the penalty boxes were full. Bill Carse, who had played for the Chicago Black Hawks, led a rush into our zone. Carse had a terrific shot and he let one go. The damn puck hit me in the chest and bounced way out. I looked up and couldn't see anything but that puck and Art Jones, the goaltender, at the other end. So I started (skating) and I got going so fast, I couldn't stop. I thought, "The hell with it. I must as well keep going." Everybody was so stunned they didn't know what was happening. I didn't even bother to deke. I got to the other end, let one go about an inch off the ice and she went in." It wasn't until Jacques Plante starred with Montreal a decade later that other goalkeepers exhibited strong puckhandling and playmaking skills.

During the late 1940s, the New York Rangers used Rayner on the point during powerplays late in a handful of games. "That was Frank (Boucher's) idea all the way. I used to do a lot of skating and shooting in practice, so he decided to try it in a game. I'd only come out half way up the blueline. It only happened four of five times," laughed Rayner.
- Legends Spotlight

"He was an NHL Second Team All-Star and appeared in the All Star game in 1949, 1950, and 1951. He is one of only five goalies to be awarded the Hart Trophy as most valuable player, winning the award in 1950. But more than awards and accolades, he was also known as one of the first wandering goalies. On more than one occasion he made a save and skated up ice with the puck before hustling back into goal. Twice in particular he came right in on the opposition goalie in an NHL game and almost scored!" -
HHoF Bio

" Playing for a mediocre Ranger team that never finished higher than fourth, Bonnie Prince Charlie led the Rangers to upset the Canadiens in the 1950 playoffs. They went on to the final round against the Detroit Red Wings. Playing not one home game, they surprised the entire NHL with their strong bid, only to lose the seventh game in dramatic fashion - in an electrifying, double-overtime affair." - The All-New Hockey's 100

"The best individual goaltending I ever witnessed was Bernie Parent in the playoffs [in 1974 and 1975] and the next best goalkeeping was Chuck Rayner in the 1950 playoffs." - Emile Francis

"You would be going in on Charlie and that stick would come out like a serpent's tongue. You'd be on your fanny in no time." - Ted Kennedy

"I owe a lot of my success to Prince Charlie. Chuck was the person who taught me the pokecheck while I was with the Rangers in 1953-54. I really appreciate what he did for me in my career." - Johnny Bower

#23 Paul Reinhart,D-X4B-5'11" 205
Only defenseman with 2 NHL playoff hat tricks. As a Flame, Reinhart made a leap directly to the pro ranks, quickly establishing himself as a superior two-way defender with versatility to boot. Although he preferred his blueline duties, he sometimes played on a forward line where some have claimed that 100-point seasons were his for the taking.

But nonetheless, as a rearguard he showed plenty of offensive spark, especially setting up goals. He was also a very strong playoff performer, netting 77 points in 83 contests over the course of his eleven-year career. - Legends of Hockey Bio

#16 Mike Ricci,C-X4B-6'0"190
He's a real tough guy. Fearless in the corners and battles hard for the puck every shift. In a word...Relentless.
Is a premier face-off man, very responsible in the defensive zone and one of the best back-checking forwards in the NHL. Elevates his play in crucial games.Ricci is a true NHL character. He was a offensively gifted player earlier in his career. Over the years, Ricci's game has evolved away from the finesse style of his junior days towards a more defensive approach although he still spots his share of goals and assists. He continues to play a game replete with leadership, character, and dogged defense.
He had TREMENDOUS heart. If he could play all 60 minuites he probably would. Great veteran and his talents will trickle down to anyone hes with. He isn't the best player in terms of points scored, but he can provide the grit that any good third or fourt line needs to wear down or check an opponent.
He would withstand a boatload of puishment to bang in a goal. Ricci scored a lot close to the crease, withstood the beatings and late in his career we see its toll. The passion would be screaming out of him he even scored a few falling down on his back. He has played 1092 nhl games and has nearly 600 career points. Playoff PTotals 110 23 43 66 +17

#9 Rocket Richard,RW-5'10"180
Richard was arguably the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history, and was one of its best all-around players. He had a lethal combination of speed, shooting ability and intensity. The Rocket led the league in goals five times during the regular season and five times during the playoffs. He was runner-up for the Art Ross five times and led the playoffs in scoring twice. Richard won two Conn Smythe trophies, one Hart, and was a member of eight Stanley Cup-winning teams. He also holds playoff records for overtime goals.

""Rocket" Richard's explosive 18 year career made him the most exciting player of his generation, and a national hero among Québecois. Fiercely competitive, a virtual demon on ice, Richard was a scoring genius. In 1944-45 he scored 50 goals in 50 games, hockey's most celebrated record for many years. He led the league in goals five times and won the Hart in 47.Above all, he excelled under pressure. He scored 18 playoff game-winning goals, still a record today." -- Historia.ca

#14 Rene Robert,C-X5B- 5'9" 165
During an NHL career that extended to a dozen seasons, Rene Robert was an important offensive weapon. The right wing on the French Connection Line with Gilbert Perreault and Richard Martin, Robert reached the 20-goal mark eight straight years between 1972-73 and 1979-80. Possessing blinding speed and a lethal shot, Robert was a fine complement to the slick playmaking of Gilbert Perreault

He’s a heart and soul type player, a leader, a tough two-way power winger with a nice touch around the net, who creates space with intelligent physical play, and has a knack for winning pucks in the corners and along the boards. Known for his hard drives towards the opponent's net, he ended up in the net when he scored his first NHL goal. Became first player in NHL history to score 50 goals and record 200 penalty minutes in the same season when he achieved feat in 1991-92. Roberts won the Masterson for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game of hockey in ‘96. He has played in 3 all-star games. He has twice led the NHL in shooting percentage, and has an incredible career percentage of 19.33.

#19 Joe Sakic,C- 5'11"185 -
Joe is a Franchise Center he owns one of the league's best wrist shots. Has smooth skating ability and crafty playmaking skills. Sees the ice extremely well and is rarely out of position. Plays with tremendous desire and determination at all times.

When all is said and done Joe Sakic should be one of the top ten scorers to ever play in the NHL. Noted for his all around play, he was a Selke trophy runner up in 2001 and excellent PKer. Sakics elite sense and patience with the puck makes him a great playmaker and lethal on the power play. His deadly wrist and snap shots make him a natural goal scorer. Never more dangerous then when he is trailing a rush, Sakic has one of the best releases in hockey history and can score before a goalie can adjust to him. His skating is about control, balance and an awesome first step that he uses in traffic to elude defenders and to break into openings. #66Conn Smythe Trophy 96 NHL 1st All-Star Team 01,02,04 Lady Byng Trophy 01 Lester B. Jim Schoenfeld, D/Coach-X3
"Jim Schoenfeld was a goaltender's best friend. A dominating defenseman in his own zone, Jim was a more unheralded version of Rod Langway in many ways. While Schoeny could handle his own against any of the NHL's toughest customers, don't think he was your stereotypical 1970's goons. He was a fan favorite in Buffalo because of his bone crunching bodychecks, his fearless shot blocking, his tenacity in front of his own net and his constant hustle and work ethic. Jim was an eager learner and was always one of the last off the ice during practice. He worked hard to improve his shot from the point that was one of his weaknesses.

At age 22, he became the youngest captain in the NHL at the time. He was eventually stripped of his captaincy before the start of the 1977-78 season. The reason was that Sabres' coach Punch Imlach wanted Jim to fight more. Schoeny refused and didn't back down from his position.

Jim, as mentioned earlier, was not an offensive threat, but probably the best shot-blocker in the NHL at that time. His career +/- rating was +247 (+211 with Buffalo). His best season came in 1979-80 when he scored 36 points (9 goals and 27 assists), all career highs. He added 110 PIM and was an amazing +60 en route to being named to the NHL second All Star team. To give you an idea of his great year, the other defensemen named to the All Star Teams were all future Hall of Famers, Robinson (First Team), Ray Bourque (First Team) and Borje Salming (Second Team)."

His demeanor was always serious. On the ice, this manifested itself in mature play and tremendous leadership. He was generally regarded as second only to Eddie Shore in terms of skill and rugged play, and Shore once confessed that Seibert was the only man he was afraid to fight. Defensively, he was one of the best shot-blockers in the game, and he could move the puck just as quickly as anyone. He was a strong, fast skater, an intimidating force with his stick and his body. He also owned excellent puck-handling skills and was almost impossible to knock off his skates. BM67
It was in the Windy City that Seibert established himself as one of the best defensemen of his era. He was named to the First or Second All-Star Team each year between 1935 and 1944, a feat surpassed only by Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard, Bobby Hull and Doug Harvey. Seibert was generally regarded as second only to Eddie Shore in terms of skill and rugged play, and Shore once confessed that Seibert was the only man he was afraid to fight. #2 Eddie Shore,D-5'11"194
Eddie Shore represented the best and worst that hockey could be. He was an incredible combination of skill and strength who could wow the fans with end-to-end rushes and hard bodychecks; he was also the man who ended Ace Bailey`s career. There really is no modern-day comparison to Shore, he was one-of-a kind.
Shore was the best at everything in the NHL in his era. He was the best player, winning the Hart Trophy 4 times, more than anybody else except Gretzky and Howe. He was the toughest player, routinely playing through injuries and constantly being targeted by the other fighters in the league. He was the game`s most colourful player, often skating in the pre-game warmup with a black cape which a manservant would remove for him on the ice. Boston fans loved him, fans in other cities hated him, but they all paid to watch him.
The most famous example of his courage was driving through a blizzard from Boston to Montreal in a car that lost its windshield on the way. When he arrived at the arena, his hands were frostbitten and he looked exhausted, yet he played the entire 60 minutes (except for his two penalties) and scored the only goal in a 1-0 Bruins victory. He was also an innovator who studied methods to give him an edge: for example he skated in a crouch position when bearing in on the defence which made it harder to be knocked off his feet, or he would sometimes intentionally shoot the puck a little wide of the net because he knew exactly where it would land after it hit the boards.
His tyrannical reign as coach and owner of Springfield in the AHL is legendary. Players dreaded the thought of being traded there, but that shouldn`t overshadow his brilliance when it came to hockey. Many of his practice exercises (i.e. the "duck-walk") were ridiculed by most at the time, yet in the 70s it was noticed the Russians were using several of those same methods. (Shore swore they spied on him and stole his ideas- fact or paranoia?).
Years later, Bill White said that although he hated every minute playing in Springfield, he never would`ve made it to the NHL if not for what Eddie Shore taught him about playing defence
