#5 Bernie 'Boom Boom' Geffrion, RW-5'9"170
The irony is that even though Bernie Geoffrion was one of the greatest players in NHL history and possessed all the qualities that fans look for in their superstars, he was always playing in the shadow of more popular players. Had he played his career with one of the other five clubs he would`ve been the star, but in Montreal he was always behind someone else in the hearts of Hab fans: first the beloved Maurice Richard (Geoffrion`s idol), then Jean Beliveau.
A strong argument could be made that Bernie was in fact Montreal`s best forward during their `56-`60 legendary dynasty. He scored more points in the playoffs during the 1950s than any other player; by a wide margin. In 1961 he became only the second player in history to score 50 goals in a season; the fans gave him a standing ovation; a sharp contrast to the boos he received when he passed Richard for the scoring title in 1955.
He was noted for several things in his playing style. First and foremost was his booming (hence the nickname "Boom Boom") slapshot which he popularized. He played the point on Montreal powerplay and terrorized many a goalie with his bullet. He had an offensive flair which came from tremondous on-ice instincts; after his first practice with the Habs, an impressed Butch Bouchard told Frank Selke "This kid can put the puck in the net". His skating style looked somewhat awkward, but any lack of natural ability was compensated for by hustle and determination. He had a fiery temper which sometimes got the better of him; one of the realities you have to accept with someone who plays with passion. Late in his career he made a comeback with the Rangers and guided what had been a chronically underachieving team to the playoffs.
Sadly, his underrated status carried over long after his playing days as Montreal didn`t get around to retiring his jersey until the 2005-06 season. He passed away the day of the ceremony.

#93 Doug Gilmour,C-5'11" 175
He was the best player, pound for pound his october playing weight was 170 when the season started but it would get dangerously close to 160 by the time april rolled around. Dougie epitomizes how a small man can play at such a high level in the NHL. Dougie had a ferocity about him that belies his size. He played on the edge of rules, with a little late push here, a sneaky lilttle cuff there. On his best night Gilmour could get into a emotional zone that lifted him into a class with the all time NHL elite. You would see it in his first shift, if he theres an extra push of energy in his stride and if there was then you knew he would be a pain all night long and a force to be delat with. He was one fo the few who was in the top five players in the league offensively and defensivley. Dougie needed to be hungry to thrive. He combined great vision and shifty skating to drive opponents nuts. Primarily a playmaker he needed wingers like Andreychuck or Wendel Clark to feed the puck too. When he wasn't attacking the opponents goal he was defending his own with relentless checking. He didn't just score big goals he scared the top players on every team. He was the heart and soul of Canadas team and became a national star and a beloved hockey legend.

#2 Bob Goldham,D -X4-6'2" 195
A great defensive d-men in Bob Goldham. A 5-time Cup winner, Bob played in 6 all-star games and was named a 2nd team all-star in '55.

It’s often said that the posts are a goaltender’s best friends. Except when Bob Goldham was on the ice, because he was truly the bosom buddy of all netminders.

A shot blocker supreme, this reliable defenseman laid down in front of more rubber than the asphalt on I-75. "Blocking shots in an art and he was the game’s best practitioner," said Detroit teammate Al Arbour, who went on to develop his own qualities as a shot blocker. "I learned the right way to do it from Bob Goldham."
-Legends of Detroit

"To this day, I can’t understand why he’s not in the Hall of Fame," former Detroit coach Jimmy Skinner said. "He was one of the best stay-at-home defensemen the game has ever seen."
-He is considered the nhl's first shot blocker.

#55 Sergei Gonchar,D-6'2"212
Sergei is a first round draft pick defenseman who went on to score 7 goals and 11 points in his team's playoff surge to the Stanley Cup Finals. He followed that up by being the HIGHEST-scoring NHL defenseman over the last 5 seasons combined.

The 6'2 footer NHL all-star may be inconsistent defensively but no one questions his world-class puck handling ability and rocket of a shot with the man advantage, hence his selection as the 7th d-man to be a powerplay specialist on the Tabs.

Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig has been playing with Gonchar since 1995 and he still can't figure his shot out. "He has a very deceptive shot," Kolzig says. "It's quicker and harder than it looks. He does a great job of coming in the back door on the power play and getting the pass from the forward and getting that quick shot past a goalie's blocker or glove."

"He is an elite defenseman," Bondra says. "He should be a perennial All-Star defenseman. He has all the tools."

# 16 Michel Goulet,LW-6'1" 185
One of the most opportunistic scorers in league history, Michel Goulet was an elite left winger during his 15-year career. He managed to score at least 20 goals in all but his last NHL year and once enjoyed a stretch of seven consecutive seasons with at least 40 goals. Although he wasn't considered a rough player, Goulet wasn't intimidated by aggressive play on the part of the opposition.

#33 Dirk Graham,LW-X3-5'11" 190
He was a diligent checker, team leader and under-rated goal scoring threat. He played the finest hockey of his career in Chicago. He scored at least 20 goals four times, helped the team reach the Stanley Cup final in 92 and served as the team's captain from 1989 to 1995. He was an inspirational leader on and off the ice and was an exemplary worker on both specialty teams. In 91 Graham's stellar work without the puck earned him the Frank J. Selke trophy. A few months later represented his country at the Canada Cup and scored a key shorthanded goal when the team vanquished team USA in the two-game final. Graham retired after the Lockout-shortened season in 1995.

#5 Rick Green,D-X4B-6'3" 220
Rick was one of the game's quintessential stay-at-home defencemen, Rick Green played over 800 NHL contests between 1976 and 1991. His trademark was staying in position and utilizing his 6'3', 220lb. frame to tie up opposing forwards. He never lost a battle for the puck. What he did best of all was clear the net of opposing players!

He was a very effective defenceman ,probably played his best hockey in Mtl. He played a smart game, had decent instincts. He passed well, and actually formed a good pairing with Robinson in the latter time of Robinson's He was one of the best defensemen allong the boards.

The high point for the steady blueliner was helping Montreal vanquish the Calgary Flames to win the Stanley Cup in 1986.

Through the late 80s' Green's defensive excellence was a pillar of the club's success under Jean Perron and Pat Burns. He was picked to participate in the 1987 Rendez-vous series between the NHL and Soviet All-Stars and was a key figure when the Habs reached the final in 1989.

#99 Wayne Gretzky,C-6'0" 185
"The White Tornado" later known as "The Great One" . Waynes game was unique and almost impenetrable. The area behind the opposition goal was dubbed "Gretzky's office" because it was from there that he made so many perfect passes for goals. He was equally known for using the trailing man on rushes rather than a man skating ahead of him. Gretzky would come in over the blue line and then curl, waiting for a defenseman, often Coffey, to join the rush and create a great scoring chance. When on the ice to kill penalties, Gretzky wasn't looking to ice the puck in a defensive role; he was looking to take the other team by surprise, to take advantage of their defenselessness to score shorthanded. The result was goals and more goals - the Oilers scoring 400 a season as a matter of routine - and Gretzky won the scoring race virtually every year in the 1980s.-HOF
-He was the most creative passer ever in the nhl.Had a high panic threshold. Would wait an extra second to attack then wait another second before weaving a perfect pass to a open team mate.

#24 Bill Hajt,D-X4B-6'3" 205
Bill is a defenseman with a healthy +321 career +/- He made his presence quietly felt during his 14 seasons with the Sabres. He was never a flashy player or a media darling, but he came up negative in the plus/minus column only once in his 13 full seasons with Buffalo. He played in 854 games, and registered 42 goal and 202 assists before a series of injuries led to his retirement in 1987. - Legends of Hockey Bio

During his 14 years as a Buffalo Sabre, Bill Hajt fulfilled the role of consummate team player from his position on the blueline, to a degree perhaps unparalleled in team history.

In his initial pro-season, 1972-73, he helped spark the Sabre's American Hockey League affiliate, the Cincinnati Swords, to the Calder Cup Championship. After 66 games with the Swords the following season, Hajt landed in Buffalo in 1974-75 as a defensive key to a squad generally considered the Sabres' best ever, a squad which fell only two games shy of a Stanley Cup Championship.

Hajt steadied the Sabres' backline for 13 additional seasons as an old-school "stay-at-home" defenseman. He seldom rushed the puck in the fashion of many defensemen of the times, and his style of play was not calculated to bring the fans out of their seats with wild applause. His positive contributions were too subtle, too routine for most fans to appreciate. For instance, Bill used his size and strength not to punish opposing forwards with thunderous body checks, but to steer them away from the goal area while stripping the puck. While not a frequent shot-blocker, Hajt was always in position to make the smart, safe play. Hajt's steady, reliable manner gave his defense partners the confidence to take chances, secure in the knowledge that the dependable, "defenseman's defenseman" would cover up. - Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame

#1 George Hainsworth,G - 5’6â€,150:
was one of hockey's dominant goaltenders of the 1920s and 1930s and his netminding heroics became a legacy that lasted many years after he retired. He appeared relaxed while performing between the pipes, as though giving a minimum of effort. His laid-back approach and exceptional puck-stopping ability continually frustrated opposing players. He won the Vezina Trophy each of the first three years it was presented, from 1927 to 1929. In 1928-29, he enjoyed his greatest season by allowing only 43 goals in 44 games and registering 22 shutouts. A veritable workhorse, Hainsworth led all NHL goalkeepers in games played for nine years out of 10 from 1926 to 1936 BM67

#39 Dominik Hasek,G- 5’11â€, 168 :
Blessed with tremendous agility and quickness, the “Dominator†will use any technique or body part to make a save and baffle shooters with his impulsive and unorthodox style. He’s so flexible there are times you think he has no bones in his body. Unlike most goalies, he is not afraid to turn away from the puck if he feels his best chance to stop the puck is to roll on his back or to fall forward on his belly while sticking out a leg behind him. Even with an empty net to shoot at, players know that when Hasek is in goal, they have not scored until the puck has passed the goal line. Because he has such control over his limbs, he has that ability to come out of the blue and make “impossible†saves. BM67

#10 Dale Hawerchuk,C-5'11" 185
At age 18, Hawerchuk took Winnipeg and the NHL by storm, smashing team records along the way. By season's end, "Ducky" as he was called by teammates, had led the Jets to the largest single season turn-around by one team in NHL history, a 48-point improvement. He shattered 17 club records in the process and became the youngest NHL player in history to reach the 100-point plateau, finishing with 103 points, the second best total by a rookie in NHL history. For his efforts, he captured the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie-of-the-Year -- the youngest to win that award -- and played in his first All-Star Game. Hawerchuk was now the darling of Winnipeg and was showered with media attention.

Admittedly a shy, reserved young man, Hawerchuk moved to a ranch outside the city limits to get away from the constant attention; however, his play would continue to attract notice. Other than a slight slump during his sophomore season in which he recorded 91 points, he reach the 100-point mark for five consecutive years, including a career-high 53 goals and 130 points in 1984-85, becoming the third youngest in NHL history to score 50 goals in a season. Goal Magazine referred to him as, "Mini-Gretzky," as he was named a Second Team All-Star behind #99 himself and was runner-up for the Hart Trophy. By the 1989-90 season, after three more All-Star Game appearances and Rendez-vous '87, Hawerchuk had re-written the Jets record book.

Despite playing in Western Canada during an era dominated by Edmonton and Calgary, Hawerchuk missed the playoffs only once during his 16-year career. During an era dominated by Gretzky and Lemieux, Hawerchuk recorded more than a point-per-game for 13 consecutive seasons. In a poll of NHL general managers during the mid-1980's asking them to select the player they would start a franchise with, Hawerchuk was voted third behind only Gretzky and Paul Coffey. He was the 23rd player to reach the 500-goal plateau in 1995-96 and the 31st player to record 1,000 points in 1990-91. His final career totals included 518 goals, 891 assists and 1,409 points, placing him 10th on the career NHL points list.

#7 Bryan Hextall,RW-5'11"170
With the careers of Frank Boucher and Bryan Hextall coming to an end, Rangers fans were anxious to see who the next star to lead the team would be. That role would be filled by Bryan Hextall, a strong, yet polite young man from the Prairies who would go on to become one of the best New York Rangers ever. Hextall was very much respected, not only for his hockey skills, but also for his classy, clean-living lifestyle off the ice. While he was a gentlemanly player though, he could and would fight back if provoked.
Hextall was one of the games best stickhandlers in the 40s. Where others would be forced to pass when confronted by opposing checkers, Hextall was strong enough to just push past them and talented enough not to lose the puck when doing it. He was also one of the few players of that era to often break into the other teams zone on his "off-wing". He twice led the NHL in goals, and won the scoring title in 1942- the last Ranger to do so until Jaromir Jagr 64 years later. His most important goal was the game-winner when New York won the Stanley Cup in 1940.
Bryan was only the start of pro hockey in the Hextall family. Two of his sons, Bryan Jr. and Dennis, had respectable NHL careers while his grandson Ron became an outstanding, and slighty tempermental goaltender.

#2 Red Horner,D-6'1"190
Inducted into HOF in1965 Red Played 12 NHL seasons from 1928 to 1940. Horner was a tough defensive defenceman mainstay for the Leafs for his entire career, beginning in 1928. For much of that time, he was paired with King Clancy, an attacking defenseman. Horner had to guard against opposition rushes when Clancy went deep into the offensive zone. He also had to protect a small but feisty Clancy and other Leafs from aggressive opponents

is regarded by many as the strongest man ever to lace up skates in the NHL. Strong beyond words, he would grab anyone foolish enough to invade his space on the ice and introduce him none too gently to the boards. He also earned a reputation as a peacekeeper over the course of his career, deterring opposition with a grasp known as the “Horton Bear Hug.†He was also a solid offensive threat and a strong skater with a cannon for a shot. #18 Marian Hossa,RW-X4B-6'1"208
A player who led his team in goals and points, and finished 3rd in all-star voting at right wing in both 2002-03 and 2003-04. In the same season he appeared briefly with the Senators but his next season was delayed by a serious knee injury. In the end, he played 60 games and spent most of his time doing defensive work on the checking line. But when he began scoring goals and collecting points, he seemed to be making up for lost time. He played only two-thirds of the season, but in the voting for the Calder Trophy he came in second after Chris Drury. His solid performance also earned him selection on the NHL All-Rookie Team and once the Senators were eliminated from the post season, he made his second appearance at the World Championships.

Hossa gave the game everything he had. It was becoming clear that Ottawa was offering him the opportunity to be a major player on their team. They started comparing him with Jaromir Jagr, who at the same age conducted himself in a similar manner

In 1999-00 Hossa tied for the team league in goals with 29 and over the next three seasons topped the 30-goal mark twice and 40-goal mark once. On the internation stage, Hossa went on to represent his homeland for the third time at 2001 World Championships and for the first time at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

One of the elite players in the NHL, Hossa went on to finish fifth in leauge scoring in 03-04 with a career 82 points (36-46-82). Although his NHL season came to an abrupt end in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Hossa would suit up for Team Slovakia at the 04 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic

#9 Gordie Howe,RW-6'0" 205
"Mr. Hockey". He played 33 NHL seasons Over five decade career Howe didn't just survive, he was dominant - on the scoring lists, in battles in the corners, on game-winning goals and when the year-end awards were handed out. He was a big man, though by modern standards no behemoth, but what set him apart was his incredible strength.Other superstars could be deemed somewhat better scorers, tougher fighters or faster skaters, no player has approached Gordie Howe's sustained level of excellence. Incredibly, Gordie finished in the top 5 in NHL scoring for 20 straight seasons. To endure and excel, Howe used a unique set of qualities, both physical and mental. He threw his weight around and he never backed away from a fight. Once Maurice "Rocket" Richard, challenged him with a shove and a few angry words.Howe knocked Richard out cold with one punch.
He often played 45 minutes of a game when the average total was 25. Observers noticed that when his exhausted line returned to the bench, Howe was the first to recover and raise his head, ready for another shift. Howe was selected to 21 NHL All-Star squads, 12 times to the 1st Team,6 Art Ross and 6 Hart as the league's most valuable player. His Detroit teams won the Stanley Cup four times

#2 Mark Howe,D/LW - 5’11,185:
was an extremely versatile player. One season he made the WHA mid-season All-Star squad at left wing. He played defense the second half of the year and excelled to the point that he ended up as one of the rearguards on the All-Star squad at the end of the season. Early in his first NHL season he was moved back to the blue line to improve the team's transition game and quarterback the power play. Later he was moved back to forward to add offensive punch and check the opposition's top scoring line. At his best on defense, he was one of the best skaters in hockey, agile and quick, sturdy on his feet and immovable. He was a gifted puck-handler, skating the puck through traffic, or finding teammates with outlet passes. BM67

#3 Harry Howell,D-6'1"195
On a Ranger team that was constantly struggling through the Original 6 era, Harry Howell was the one reliable and steady player on the team that kept them afloat. He joined the Rangers straight from junior in 1952, the New York fans were tough on him at first but slowly began to see him as the hardest working player on the team who gave his all no matter the situation; by the time in 1967 when the team held a night in Howell`s honour it was clear that he was the Rangers most popular player.
Howell was considered by many to be the best defensive defenceman in hockey in the 1960s. He posessed great strength, but never was a heavy hitter, just impossible to move or get by. His primary attribute was shot-blocking; after a 1-0 win over Chicago, Dennis Hull claimed Howell should get credit for the shutout because he made more saves than the goalie. Ed Giacomin called him the best shot-blocking defenceman he ever saw, who always knew if the shooter would shoot or fake.
By the mid-60s, Emile Francis estimated that Howell was logging more icetime than any other player in hockey Quiet defensive play usually won`t win you any awards, but in 1967 Howell captured the Norris Trophy; the last player to win it before Orr took it over. By the end of his career he had played more pro hockey games than any other defenceman, and his record for most games played by a New York Ranger still stands to this day.

Few of the game's superstars could match the physical talents of Bobby Hull. The Golden Jet combined speed, a feared slapshot and a powerful physique to rise to the elite of the NHL in the 1960s He scored 604 goals (even more PIM !) 1,153 points (at more than a point-per-game avg.), five-time 50+ goal scorer, 24 career hat tricks. I'm still not sure how he ever managed to win the Lady Byng given his reputation for gritty, tough play. When the NHL started calculating +/-, Hull recorded a +/- of plus 100 over his last five years (imagine what he would have had earlier in his career). He was the complete player -HHOF Vanilander

“Iggy†combines deceptive speed, strength, tenacity and great hands to pose a threat every time he’s on the ice. He’s a rock-solid, do-it-all wing who can provide both scoring and leadership. One of the best along the boards and in the corners, Iginla is extremely strong and will take the pounding in front of the net. A power forward who doesn’t play a traditional big man’s game, since he usually carries the puck himself rather than wait for it in scoring position. Iginla was a member of Canada’s 2002 Olympic gold medal winning team, and the 2004 World Cup winner. Iginla has won 1 Pearson Trophy, 1 Art Ross Trophy, 2 Rocket Richard Trophies, and is a 2 time all-star.

Coach - Tommy Ivan – He coached with a quiet manner. He never shouted, ranted or raved at players. He was quiet but very authoritative too. He knew the systems, how to play your position, where to play. He was a great leader, who had a knack for success, coaching a dynasty in Detroit and building a Stanley Cup winner in Chicago. He coached the Red Wings to six consecutive first place finishes, and won the Stanley Cup in 1950, ’52, and ’54. Possibly his greatest accomplishment in those years was putting together the famous Production Line of Sid Abel, Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe. As GM of the Blackhawks, he helped rebuild the teams sagging farm system and assembled the pieces for the 1961 Stanley Cup, including Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull.

Tumba was a big fellow at a solid 6'3" and 208 Ibs. He was in some ways a Gordie Howe type of player, very hard to stop and impossible to separate from the puck. He was however far from complete as Howe. Tumba's strength was his hard and accurate shot that always seemed to be on target. With his combination of physical strength and good hands he was a scoring threat whenever he had the puck.Tumba played for Sweden 245 times scoring 223 goals more than anybody else in the history of the Swedish national team. He was the first European trained player to attend an NHL camp when he went to Boston Bruins training camp in 1957. He was also a long time captain. He played in 14 World Championships, more than any other Swedish player, as well as four Olympic tournaments. He was a three time (1953,57 and 62) World Champion. Tumba was selected as the best forward in the 1957 and 62 World Championships. His 127 points (84+43) is the 5th best result in WC history. Bob Johnson -Coach-X3
"Badger Bob" was one of the most popular and successful hockey teachers and administrators in the amateur and pro ranks. His effervescent personality combined with a technical knowledge of the game to make him a natural leader wherever he worked.

A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Johnson played hockey in the City Park Board League, was an all-star in high school and took on his first coaching assignment at the age of 13 when he guided a local midget team. During his years playing forward at the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota, he spent much of his time coaching high school teams. Johnson led Minnesota to two conference championships and was the team's top scorer.

In 56, Johnson became the head coach of the Warroad high school in rural Minn. After one season he moved to Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis and won four city championships in six seasons. In 63, he took the post at Colorado College and after three years he moved on to the University of Wisconsin. Johnson guided the Badgers for 15 years, captured three national titles and was named the NCAA's top coach in 77. During this period he also coached the U.S. national team from 73 to 75 and the Olympic team at the Innsbruck games in 76. He later coached the Americans at the 81 and 84 Canada Cups.

#5 Duke Keats,D-X4-5'11" 195
A player who was a 1st team all-star in all 5 years of the WCHL/WHL's existence
"In 1919 Keats joined the Edmonton Eskimos of the Big 4 western league and led the league in scoring for the next two seasons. In 1921 the Eskimos joined the Western Canada Hockey League and it was around this time that story is told of Duke skating the length of the ice backwards and scoring a goal on the opposition. We may never know if Keats actually accomplished such a feat but it is certainly a fact that he was a perennial All-Star while in the WCHL, being named to the First Team for four consecutive years from 1922 to 1925. He was also named as a First Team All-Star for the Western Hockey League in 1926. One of his most memorable goals came in the 1923 WCHL playoffs against Regina. Keats won the game for Edmonton on a penalty shot and the victory sent the Eskimos into the Stanley Cup finals against the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League. The Senators won the best-of-three series with two, single-goal victories, one coming in overtime." - HHoF Bio

By age 14, Gordon Keats was tearing up the Cobalt Mining League on O'Brien Mines team. In the wake of his storied stints in Haileybury and Peterborough, the professional teams started to remember his name. After a while, people were coming from all over to sneak a peak at hockey's newest wunderkind. Keats received offers from every professional hockey town in the country. He signed in the fall of 1915 with the Toronto Blueshirts. In 1915-16, his rookie season, the tall muscular lad was stuffed in between Corb and Cy Denneny, a unit that would become the highest scoring in the NHA that season. Keats lived up to his billing, scoring 22 goals and 29 points in 24 games.

Keats hit his stride in Edmonton. The "Iron Duke", hailed on all sides as one of the most dominating forces ever seen, was the best player in the league. Throngs of people clamored to see this ig, strong center perform miracles with the puck. He shot as well as anyone anywhere, combining unparalleled offensive ability with a hard, clean style to become the greatest player to play in Edmonton before Gretzky.
- Ultimate Hockey
"A fiery leader, once while playing for Toronto of the National Hockey Association during the 1916-17 season, Keats became so angered by the poor performance of goalie Billy Nicholson that he strapped on the pads and took over in net himself for the next period." - Wings of Legend

" 18. Duke Keats, 2420 NPIM- Skill and toughness rolled into one. Keats was especially grumpy in 1926, the final year of the WCHL, when he collected 401 NPIM." - Normalized Penalties

"Duke is the possessor of more hockey grey matter than any man who ever played the game." - Frank Patrick

"Keats was the brainiest pivot that ever strapped on a skate because he could organize plays and make passes every time he starts." - Lester Patrick

"Gordon (Duke) Keats was the best player of all time. You would have thought he had a nail in the end of his stick, the way he could carry that puck around. He was that good." - Lloyd McIntyre, Edmonton Eskimo teammate

#4 Red Kelly,D/C -6'0" 195
-He was a unique player - versatile and talented enough to be one of the NHL's best-ever defensemen early in his career and a high-scoring center at the end. A solid but mobile and skilled defenseman, he quickly found a home on the team playing with such superstars as Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel. Kelly was an effective checker, at home on the blue line or on the left wing, where he was sometimes used due either to injuries or to add a little muscle on the offense. Kelly was an integral part of Detroit's winning formula. His puck-carrying ability allowed the Wings to move from their own zone quickly and provided them with a quick transition game. Kelly was an All-Star for eight consecutive seasons with the Red Wings, six times on the First Team, and won the Lady Byng Trophy three times. In 1954 he was chosen as the first recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the outstanding defenseman in the league. In 1956 he was named team captain, a job he held until the end of 1957-58 season. In 1960 the Wings traded Kelly to Toronto. He moved up to the center position and began what could be called a second career as a successful full-time forward. Frank Mahovlich played on the left wing in Kelly's first full season with the Leafs and set a team record with 48 goals, many of them due to the veteran's playmaking skills. In addition to his talent, Kelly brought his winning ways to the Leafs. In his eight years with the team, Toronto won the Stanley Cup four times.

#10 Ted "Teeder"Kennedy, C - 5’11â€,180 :
Never the the fastest or smoothest of skaters, "Teeder" became a remarkable leader with an infectious combination of determination and confidence. He was an exceptional playmaker, and always seemed to know where and when to set up his man. Known as one of the game's great face-off men and an antagonistic forechecker, he had the ability to score the important goal, to make the right check at the right time - to do all the little things that win big games and championships, which his Leafs did on a regular basis. One of the gutsiest captains in NHL history, “Come o-n-n-n-n Teeder!" was the rallying cry when the Leafs needed to engineer a comeback with a timely goal or face-off win. BM67

#1 Dave Kerr,G-X3-5'10"162
From his humble beginnings with Toronto Canoe Club as a teenager, to his years with the Abitibi Paper Co. in Iroquois Falls, Kerr was a standout goalie with a lightning fast right hand and extraordinary eyesight. He moved to Montreal, and guarding the AAA net won the Allan Cup in 1930. He signed with the Maroons later that year, but in 1934, after bouncing up and down between the NHL and the farm team, he was sold to the Americans to replace Andy Aitkenhead. It was there he played the last seven years of his career and achieved his greatest glory.

While he came close to personal and team success, it wasn't until 1939-40 when everything fell into place for Kerr. He won the Vezina Trophy, was elected to the First All-Star team, took the team on a league-record 19-game unbeaten streak, played all 48 games for the Blueshirts, and led the Rangers to a Stanley Cup victory over Toronto. He later invested in hotels in Belleville, one of which he later leased to the Ontario Ministry of Health for a pilot self-care test, before selling them in the mid-1960s.

Hockey Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier once joked that the only way to stop Kerr was to wrap chains around his arms and legs.He attracted plenty of harsh attention from checkers, but Kerr was neither deterred nor drawn into taking penalties for retaliation.

"I like to play beautifully," Kharlamov once said. And the CSKA Moscow winger's high-speed game with artistic dekes achieved a rare beauty at the 1972 Sapporo Olympics, where he led the tournament with six goals and nine assists. He added another gold in 1976 and a silver in 1980. Kharlamov remains arguably the most revered player in Soviet history after his tragic death in a 1981 car accident.

#8 Joe Klukay,LW-X5-6'0" 182
Left-winger Joe Klukay played nearly 600 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins during the 1940s and '50s. He was a consistent goal scorer and hard worker who contributed to four Stanley Cup wins with the Leafs.

Klukay joined the powerful Toronto Maple Leafs in 1946 and promptly learned how to win and be a professional. He and linemate Nick Metz became the league's most effective penalty killing tandem on a team that won through discipline and defence. Led first by Syl Apps and then Teeder Kennedy, Toronto won three consecutive Stanley Cups from 1947 to 1949. Klukay also spent some time working alongside talented centre Max Bentley. Any serious Stanley Cup contender needs a crasher, a big intimdating forward who can turn a game's flow with one huge hit. The Toronto Maple Leafs were fortunate in 1946 to have found their crasher in Joe Klukay.

In the mid-1940s, Klukay was one of Leaf boss Conn Smythe's prize scoring prospects down on the farm. But Klukay soon found that the Leafs already had enough offense. He adjusted to become one of the top penalty-killers-defensive forwards to ever step on the ice.

He showed himself to be a strong skater, one who prided himself on his mental toughness, his cool under fire. He never appeared to be out of place, playing an amazingly sound, technical brand of hockey.

Were you protecting a one-goal lead with two minutes remaining? Klukay was your man! Using one part technique and one part barbarism, the big lad helped drive the Leafs to Cups in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951.

#37 Olaf Kolzig,G-X3-6'3"225
He has incredible size for a goaltender(6'3). Is an intimidating presence in the crease. Possesses fast reflexes and poise. Always displays a great will to win.

A goalie who has played 60+ games for 7 straight years till 05-06(59), he owns a stellar .930 sv% in the playoffs he played junior hockey for the New Westminster Bruins and Tri-City Americans, with whom he became the first goalie in WHL history to score a goal, in a game on November 29, 1989. He led that high-scoring circuit with a 3.48 goals-against average in 1988-89, prompting the Washington Capitals to draft him in the first round 19th overall in the 1989 Entry Draft.

In 1994, he was named most valuable player in the AHL playoffs after his Portland Pirates won the Calder Cup championship. His exploits earned him a permanent spot on the Washington roster, at first as backup to Jim Carey for three years.

During the first round of the 1996 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Vezina Trophy-winning Carey began to play poorly, and Kolzig took over admirably, posting a 1.94 goals-against average and .934 save percentage in five appearances against the Pittsburgh Penguins. In one game, which lasted into a fourth overtime period, Kolzig played all 139 minutes and 15 seconds, saving 62 of 65 Pittsburgh shots. Petr Nedved finally scored on him to give the Penguins a 3-2 victory. The Penguins won the series, but Kolzig had won the affection of the Washington fans, who nicknamed him "Olie the Goalie."

In 1997, after a disappointing season in which the Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time since 1982, Carey was traded to Boston and Kolzig earned the number-one job. He won 33 games, played in his first NHL All-Star Game, stopping 14 of 17 shots in his one period of action, and was the key to Washington's excellent performance in the 1998 playoffs. He tied an NHL record with four shutouts, and the Caps made it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the defending champions, the Detroit Red Wings.

Kolzig has continued to be the Capitals' workhorse between the pipes, playing 73 games and a league leading 4370 minutes in 1999-2000. In 2000 he was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender and was a First Team All-Star.

At about the same time, several key skaters with the Habs jumped to the WHA. Suddenly the club was in need of some hitting power up front. Lambert's profile made for a perfect fit. He joined the Canadiens in 1973-74 and attained only modest results. But in year two, he established himself as the power forward the club had desired. He was soon billed as the French John Ferguson?a hard-as-nails, rugged performer who excelled in the corners and in front of the net during power plays. He hooked up with Doug Risebrough and Mario Tremblay to form "The Kid Line." The trio formed a superb collective with a finely tuned balance between great defensive play and an ability to score points. -HHoF

Leetch has a superb array of talent. Skating, passing, shooting, sense, and some grit combine to make a very complete defenseman. Tape to tape passes on the forehand and backhand come at ease for Leetch making him an awesome powerplay QB and a gem at the transition game. A hard and accurate shooter he has a knack for getting shots through defenders and on net. Leetch has top notch skating ability and makes his team a threat for an odd man rush every time he's on the ice. He also uses his great lateral movement to close openings, leaving opposing forwards without room to maneuver. In the late 80's early 90's if one went to the game they woudl most likely walk into the gardens and here the fans chant “REGGIE---REGGIE---REGGIEâ€

Reggie was well known for his Aero pads and great glove saves and the helmet pump after a big win.Reggie was a card-carrying stand-up goaltender. He just really had a flare for the dramtic and clutch save. He made saves that you thought had no chance of being saved. He relished beating "the beast" also known as the montreal canadiens

He had 19-game unbeaten streak for Calgary during 1983-84 season. It was the longest such streak by any goaltender that season and set a Calgary record for longest unbeaten streak. Was runner-up from Masterton and Vezina Trophies in 1983-84. Named NHL Player of the Month for November 1985.Set Boston postseason record (since broken) with 1,027 minutes in goal during 1988 Stanley Cup playoffsWilliam M. He was big and strong but rarely had to bully his way through defenders, sending them flying instead with deft fakes and dekes. In him, the attributes of the pure scorer and the playmaker were fused and his size, reach and balance made his end-to-end rushes seem effortless. In a few long strides, with a twist of those wide shoulders and quick change of direction, he found space on the ice where previously the way had been closed. Forced to choose between his accurate and heavy shot or his long arms reaching around them with a sweeping move, goalies were often left shaking their heads while they retrieved the puck from the net. Rarely has a sport's dominant player made the game look so easy and natural. HOF

He was a giant of a man at 6'3 he scored 30 goals 3 times in a row in a era where 30 goal scorers were like 50 goal scorers. Litz was named to the NHL second all-star team in 1957. He often formed a solid line with Bobby Hull and Lorne Ferguson. Between 1958 and 1961, the steady veteran served as the Hawks' team captain. In 1961, he helped the team win its first Stanley Cup since 1938. He won 3 cups with toronto and 1 with chicago

Lowe was pillar in the building of the Edmonton Oilers into a Stanley Cup champion. He was a solid positional player in his own zone, a team leader, and an astute playmaker on offense. His leadership on and off the ice was a major component of Cup championships in both Edmonton and New York.

His mobility, defensive hockey sense, and puck handling skills made him an asset on a club that won five Stanley Cups in seven years beginning in 1983-84

#20 Don Luce,C-X3-6'2"190
A good skater, and a hard worker, throughout his career, Luce was acknowledged as a premier defensive forward and penalty-killer. Called a junior-grade Clarke, who does everything, almost as good as Bobby. He may have been the most versatile performer ever to wear the Sabres sweater, combining offense prowess and checking tenacity to a degree unequaled in team history. His marvelous 1974-75 season, perhaps the most remarkable year ever registered by a Sabre, produced 33 goals, 43 assists, and an astonishing club-record plus-61 rating in his role as chief penalty killer and defensive stalwart. His 8 shorthanded goals were then an NHL record, and still stand as the Sabres team record. His remarkable season propelled Luce into the league spotlight as the winner of Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game of hockey.
The most dynamic penalty-killing duos of all-time by selecting While the French Connection grabbed the headlines for the Sabres of the early 1970s, the team's acquisition of checking center Don Luce from the Detroit Red Wings in 1971 was equally critical to the team's success. In fact, Luce may have been the most versatile performer ever to wear the Sabres sweater, combining offense prowess and checking tenacity to a degree unequaled in team history.

The fact that Luce was often overshadowed by flashier teammates and by Selke Award winners on other teams warrants a closer look at his marvelous 1974-75 season, perhaps the most remarkable year ever registered by a Sabre. While the NHL and the Sabres have duly lauded the 20-goal season which captured the Selke Trophy for Michael Peca in 1996-97, Luce produced 33 goals (8 shorthanded), 52 assists, and an astonishing club-record plus-61 rating in his role as chief penalty killer and defensive stalwart. - Buffalo Hall of Fame

"All-Hustle -Don Luce, Buffalo - A junior-grade Clarke who does everything almost as well as Bobby. If the Sabres have any hopes for a Stanley Cup, they rest on him." - Hockey Digest, June 1977 He still holds the Sabres club record for his +61 and 8 SHG, which was an NHL record at the time. .

Vladimir is arguably one of the best defense players in the history of Soviet hockey. Lutchenko was notorious for his steady performance and unprecedented consistency throughout his career in hockey. He was well respected among his teammates and recognized as an extremely reliable player in both SCKA and the national team.

Although he had a powerful slapshot, his strongest part was his performance in defense. Lutchenko set up the record for Soviet defense players when he scored 4 goals in a game against Sweden at the Ivestia Cup in 1975. His record still remains unbroken.

#2 Al MacInnis,D - 6'2" 200
Shot-blocking defencemen fear him. Goalies cringe when they see him hop over the boards. It comes down to two words, "the shot." Al MacInnis is acknowledged as possessing the hardest slapshot in the NHL, and although at one time he used it at every opportunity, MacInnis now employs the fear of his shot to set up plays, take an extra step, or unleash the blast of another drive.

Al perfected his shot in small town Port Hood on the island of Cape Breton. He would spend hrs each day taking shots at his parents barn .Perfecting the best tool of his trade. His shot would let Al advance through the hockey leagues till he got to the nhl. Once there he worked on his game and became a legend.

There are only a few father and son combinations not only to have played in the NHL but to have won a Stanley Cup. Lionel and Brian Conacher and Bobby and Brett Hull certainly are two of the more notable fathers and sons to have both enjoyed Stanley Cup victories. Here's one more combination to add to the list: Jack and Fleming MacKell.

#15 John MacLean,RW-X2 - 6’0â€, 200:
He likes to mix it up and play physically, grinding along the boards and bumping shoulders. A warrior with a natural scorer’s hands and a sound defensive game, he’s always showed up big in the playoffs, and in overtime, and he can play in a variety of roles – scoring line, checking line, power play. The teams all-time leading scorer Johnny Mac scored "The Goal" and was a key player in the Devils first three deep playoff runs, capped by their first Cup win in 95. He was a gritty competitor with an above average touch around the net, and played a solid defensive game.

#7 Rick MacLeish,LW-5'11" 175
A great 2-way forward and 2-time playoff scoring leader, C/LW Rick MacLeish The Flyers opted to start MacLeish in the AHL in 1971-72 before recalling him late in the year. The next season he broke through with 50 goals while playing the power play and taking a regular shift with Gary Dornhoefer and Ross Lonsberry. Over the next two season he continued to produce on offense but was asked to take on penalty killing and defensive responsibility. MacLeish's excellence was a key component on the Flyers' consecutive Stanley Cup wins in 1974 and 1975. During the first title run he led all playoff goal scorers with 13 goals and 22 points. Overall, MacLeish was named to play in the 1976, 1977 and 1980 NHL all-star games.

During the late 70s, MacLeish was a top two-way player for Philly. In 1979-80 he scored 31 goals while teaming with Bob Kelly and Dennis Vervegaert. The trio helped the Flyers set an NHL record by going undefeated in 35 straight games and later reach the 1980 Stanley Cup final-Legends of Hockey

A two-time Stanley Cup winner and the best defenseman at the 1991 World Championship. He was a hard-nosed stay-at-home defenceman who knew every trick in the book and could pass the puck ahead to his forwards fairly well.

The steady rearguard became a fixture on the Flames as they excelled in the regular season but constantly ran into the unstoppable Edmonton Oilers in the playoffs. In 1986, they finally vanquished their rivals and reached the finals where they lost to the Montreal Canadiens. In May, 1987, Macoun was involved in an automobile accident that resulted in severe nerve damage to his arm. He was forced to sit out the entire 1987-88 season but returned the next year to help the Flames win their first Stanley Cup

The "most physically talented man ever to sport the Toronto Maple Leaf colors
"Frank Mahovlich was a talented and classy winger, a large man with the skills and hands of a pure scorer." - HHoF Bio
"There are other excellent skaters in the NHL... But no one else is so elegant, so electric, so furious, so fluid. Other skaters stride, he swoops. They glide, he soars. They sprint, he explodes. Head down, shoulder up, legs churning, one hand on his stick, Mahovlich looks like the Super Continental coming through Saskatchewan, and is almost as powerful and as hard to knock down." - Viva Mahovlich! - Peter Gzowski
"Bobby Hull may score more goals, but no one scores better goals than Frank" - Dave Keon

#24 Sergei Makarov,RW-5'11"185
9 time winner of the Izvestia Trophy as leading scorer in the USSR
"Makarov became the best right wing in Europe. After the tragic death of Kharlamov he became the successor of this great player. His marvellous stick handling, unbelievable speed and scoring instinct made him one of Viktor Tikhonov’s most dangerous weapons. He became assistant captain and silenced the criticism of the past." - russianrocket

"An excellent skater, Makarov is the prototype Soviet-trained winger. He mixes outstanding speed with rock-steady balance and with a chippy approach that makes him impossible to intimidate. He skates with the apparent belief that every puck he shoots should go in the net, and every pass he makes will find the tape of the intended teammate's stick. His confidence is formed from years of unparalelled international success." - 1993-94 Hockey Almanac

"Chelyabinsk native Sergei Makarov was a masterful one-on-one player with magical hands who could make the most incredible moves. He always put up big numbers regardless of what linemates he played with." - World Cup Hockey

"Makarov stands for the unlimited will to always seek the extremely difficult solutions in game situations and to overcome obstacles." - Viktor Tikhono

#7 Rick Martin,LW-X3-5'11"179
If injuries didn`t put a premature end to his career at age 30, Rick Martin, with a few more healthy seasons would have undoubtedly hit 500 goals and 1000 points and likely received a spot in the Hall of Fame. Fate may have dealt him a bad hand, but Martin still packed a lot into his brief career. After being drafted by Buffalo in 1971, he was put on a line with Gilbert Perreault and set a new NHL record for most goals by a rookie with 44. The duo were later joined by Rene Robert to form the French Connection; one of the best and certainly the most exciting line of the 70s. Martin would hit 50 goals twice, was a 1st All-Star twice, and was selected to play in the All-Star Game 8 straight years.
Martin was a very fast and strong skater, but his greatest strength was his shot. Not only was it among the league`s hardest (it was known to knock a few goalies gloves off), it was also one of the most accurate. Martin didn`t waste his chances; he`d wait for the goalie to expose an opening, then wire the puck through it before anyone could react. The most telling statement of Martin`s offensive talent came from Punch Imlach, who had been around for decades and seen all the greats. Imlach stated that Rick Martin was the greatest natural goal-scorer he had ever seen. High praise

Vladimir began a brilliant playing career with the Czech national team that spanned from 1970 until 1981. During those years, Martinec help guide the Czechoslovak team to a World and European Championship medal on every occasion, comprising of three bronze, five silver and highlighted by the three World and European Championship gold medals in 1972, 1976 and 1977. His three Olympic tournaments earned him an additional bronze in 1972 and in 1976 took home the silver. Martinec reached the finals in his only Canada Cup appearance in 1976. His impressive totals of 155 National Team goals in 289 games, partly explain the three World Championship All Star nominations in 1974, 1976 and 1977. Aside from playing with Dukla Jihlava during the 1978-79 season, Martinec proudly wore the colours of Tesla Pardubice in his 13 other seasons in Czechoslovak national league spanning from 1967 to 1981, suiting up a total of 539 times and scored an incredible 343 goals. Martinec won the Golden Stick Award as Player of the Year four times, was the Top Scorer in 1978-79 and claimed the national title during the 1972-73 season. His playing career ended after four seasons with German club ESV Kaufbeuren in 1985, where Martinec also later coached, after his first coaching assignment with his old club from Pardubice.
