When you carry a semiautomatic in public you are saying I have power and can kill you. All you need to know about me.

I can’t speak for New Jersey but the reality of what’s happening in LTC is a nightmare we in the industry all saw playing out before this virus started to spread. The logistics just aren’t in our favor.

Most LTC facilities have shared rooms with a curtain separating the residents. They can’t afford with the money we get in from Medicaid to pay what some of the bigger private hospitals can. As such most LTC employees that have to do up close and personal care on the residents, the CNAs, work in multiple facilities to make ends meet. Most facilities need a 90+% occupancy rate just not to close so even if a case pops up in house, where do you move the resident to?

They closed down colleges early for this very reason, because the virus would spread like wildfire in a communal based living space.

Pence just started his LTC PPE tour. We needed it back in March. Most of us were calling our state begging and pleading for a way for us to procure masks, gowns, gloves and were given the run around while hospitals were prioritized until April. Flu season had just ended and most places were already short on supplies. When they went to reorder the state and feds had bought up everything causing a mad scramble. As such nursing homes, rest homes, assisted livings are all doing what they can with minimal to no PPE. They’re an essential tier in the health care continuum as people need short term rehab, respite stays, and long term senior living. Do to our lack of PPE, 1 in 5 people in Massachusetts sick with the virus are LTC staff. Not because they did a bad job or because they didn’t care. But because they didn’t have the tools and the cards were stacked against them.

We in LTC are burnt out and tired. We wear the same mask day in and day out for 8, 12, 16 hour days so we can conserve our PPE. While restrictions will lift in Massachusetts, most LTCs will continue to have to be in lockdown. Our new normal is isolation and I don’t think that will end until a vaccine is developed. I tell my staff every day how great a job they’ve done as we have zero cases but have to also remind them, even when the surge ends out in the community, ours will begin when are first resident gets the virus. Because once it’s in house, it’s like trying to plug a hole on a sinking ship.

There’s a lot that needs to be looked at in senior care and it’s not what we didn’t do; it’s what the state and feds didn’t do for us. How does it make sense not to prioritize the very industry caring for the most at risk?

Thank you for this info it's very valuable.

We hope to open Mendon Twin Drive-In, legally and safely, Monday May 18 at 6pm. Movies on both giant screens will start after sundown. We’ll begin selling tickets online if and when MA government provides permission to operate, hopefully this will happen Monday morning.
Below, please find updated preparations:

Block every other parking space
Use fences, cones, stanchions, signs, spray paint, and tape to create distance marks anywhere customers might wait in line
Cover all food and beverage, including our fresh popped popcorn
Turn over every outdoor picnic table (we have no indoor dining)
Install plexiglass between employees and customers
Install hand sanitizer dispensers
Give every employee mask and gloves
Ask any employee with a high temperature or who traveled the last sixty days to stay home
Install bins for exchange of credit card, money, or ticket scanning
Add food pickup from an app *we’re testing this new system now
Sanitize all facilities
Thoroughly clean all sixteen acres
Close every other restroom facility
Close every other sink
Install dividers between all restroom facilities
Create in and out path for each restroom

Thanks to our team, they’ve set a new standard for safety. We’ve presented a written plan, pictures, and video, and communicated with state and local officials, to obtain MA permission to open.

We’re already doing takeout food. Our parking lot is already distanced. We have more space per customer than virtually any business. The experience is 99% outdoors or in your vehicle. We believe it’s time to open.

Families need safe, affordable entertainment. People need paychecks. Government needs taxes. We all need positive things to celebrate. We hope to see you Monday night.
Yours in flicks, food, and fun,
