Replica of Bobby Orr statue is being raffled to benefit pandemic workers - The Boston Globe

The Boston Bruins Foundation announced Tuesday that it will raffle off a small replica of “The Goal" — the statue of Bobby Orr’s famous Stanley Cup-winning strike in 1970 — with proceeds earmarked for organizations that benefit first responders in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The full-size bronze statue, commonly referred to as the “Flying Bobby," was unveiled 10 years ago and stands as the centerpiece fronting TD Garden’s new Hub on Causeway entrance.

The replica, 18 inches by 18 inches, is one of only 11 in existence, according to the foundation, which already has committed $400,000 to COVID-19-related organizations.

In its media release, the foundation quoted Orr as saying, “Thank you to all the first responders, health care providers, and frontline workers that contribute to the daily battle against COVID-19.”

Orr also referred to the workers as “heroes,” the same term he used in a recent open letter lauding all workers at Massachusetts General Hospital, for their efforts throughout the pandemic.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at nhlalumniassociation.org/Fundraiser.

Sales will end May 8, two days prior to the 50th anniversary of the goal vs. the St. Louis Blues in Game 4 of the 1970 Cup Final. The goal ended Boston’s 29-year Cup drought.

Hell baby
What a weird time.

The president’s lies can be immediately obvious. You don’t even have to dig for information to prove them.

Couldn’t imagine defending this man.

Yeah the fake news media keeps making him tell blatant lies on camera. Or whatever. Great defense fellas.

Like the people that defend him understand we have eyeballs and ears right?

Sorry, I must have missed it or can’t see it. Who was fired?

Isn't the question, who did the firing, not that coward in the WH, he always gets someone else to do the firing. He talks big but is afraid of sand. Unless, of course, he is on Reality TV, "You're Fired" was his favorite line.

So GA is going to open. I am glad I am not living there. It would be my death sentence since I am such a high risk for COVID-19.

Thanks, Governor Murphy of NJ, for staying strong and holding the line, unlike GA.

I don't want Donald J. Trump to be the cause of my death.

Good News:

Rutgers University has announced that it will launch the nation's most extensive prospective study of health care workers exposed to COVID-19, including a series of clinical trials that will explore new drug treatments, antibody testing, and long-term health tracking as to how to treat the disease and prevent the spread.

About 550 health care providers and aboutv300 non-health care workers from Rutgers University Hospital in Newark and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick have volunteered for the study, some having had direct patient exposure and others having had none.

Hopefully, we will get data and facts to make future sound decisions regarding the COVID-19 rather than flying by the seat of our pants or advice from DJT.

Pelosi: Trump 'engaged in distractions' amid 'total failure' on testing

Speaking on "PBS NewsHour," Pelosi asserted that Trump has engaged in a series of "distractions" and "misrepresentations" in order to deflect responsibility for the handling of the virus's spread in the U.S.

"What is impeding the federal government from addressing the COVID-19 crisis is the president’s denial, delay in all of this, and that has been deadly," Pelosi said. "We are insisting on the truth and the president is engaged in a series of misrepresentations to the American people and that is the impediment."

She went on to argue that Trump has refused to recognize science and the role of government in the nation's response to the pandemic, noting that his recent decision to impose limits on U.S. immigration was another distraction to avoid blame.

"[Trump is] always engaged in distractions like immigration, distractions like supporting people in the street," she said. "They're all distractions away from the fact, the known fact, that he's a total failure when it comes to testing."

Trump has faced continued scrutiny over how his administration initially responded to the crisis, with many state officials regularly voicing concerns over a lack of testing and medical equipment. The administration promised tens of millions of tests would be available by the end of March, but only about 4 million tests have been conducted thus far.

States smuggle PPE to avoid federal seizures as House probes Kushner

Now, states and hospital officials are concealing shipments of supplies from the federal government in order to avoid detection. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat, recently secretly bought millions of masks and gloves from China. He kept the details under wraps, "because we've heard reports of Trump trying to take PPE in China and when it gets to the United States," a source familiar with the situation told the Chicago Sun-Times.

"The governor has clearly outlined the challenges this administration has faced as we've worked around the clock to purchase PPE for our health-care workers and first responders," a spokesperson for Pritzker told the outlet. "The supply chain has been likened to the Wild West, and once you have purchased supplies, ensuring they get to the state is another Herculean feat."

Dr. Andrew Artenstein, the chief physician executive at Baystate Health in Massachusetts, revealed in a letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine that he was questioned by the FBI after the hospital staff worked "around the clock" to secure a shipment of PPE.

And also, what’s the point of that? I assume they’re all staying put anyways, but what is the point of burning tests on one small community? Let’s say 5% of their population has it. What do you do with that information? It’s not like it can’t spread to all the other members of the community at some other point in time. That community may be rich, but it can’t actually believe it’s in any way self sustainable and can isolate.

What we should be working toward (collectively) is pushing down the curve and getting to a point of contact tracing to be able to have the capacity to fight off a second spike. Lot easier to fight off a second spike when the virus is held to low numbers nationwide. Small little pockets being tested/being confirmed free of the virus means absolutely nothing beyond a few days for either those small pockets or the rest of us. Complete waste of what is now an extremely limited resource.

I feel like an old school Republican for the first time in my life.

f*** the federal government right now. Nothing but an obstacle to states (some states) that are trying to care for their people.

“Equipment and testing is up to you...we will seize all of your stuff to make that job impossible, along with do nothing to assist in any way...but it’s all up to you!”

From the same article.

"
Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and a group of House Democrats called on FEMA to provide any documents related to the seizures.

"Officials and health care providers in California, Florida, Washington, Illinois, Oregon, Alaska and Texas have described similar experiences," the lawmakers said in a letter to FEMA Administrator Peter Gaynor. "FEMA must explain their actions," Nadler added.

The seizures had already come under scrutiny from two other House committees after The New York Times reported that Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner had "surprised" FEMA officials by redirecting supplies. Kushner himself said during a White House coronavirus briefing that he had supplies delivered to New York after Trump got a call "from his friends" about the conditions in the city's hospitals. "

It is called Donald J. Trump disease, it is killing Americans. Some Americans don't recognize this disease and protest not to save their own lives and that of others.

The Quiet Hand of Conservative Groups in the Anti-Lockdown Protests

The group, which was created this month, has yet to report any financial activity. But its founder, Suzzanne Monk, who is active on Twitter with the handle @Trumpertarian, called the idea for the rally “pushback against these governors who want to stay shut down far beyond their economic capacity to do so.”
Save Our Country,” which was formed to push for a quicker easing of restrictions.

YouTube program that went online the day Mr. Trump named him to the task force, Mr. Moore said he had “one big donor in Wisconsin” who had pledged financial support for the protesters, telling him, “‘Steve, I promise, I will pay the bail and legal fees of anyone who gets arrested.’”

Protesters Pushing to Reopen Economy Are ‘Idiots,’ Says Top Manufacturing Lobbyist

Mr. Timmons’s post began with a single word in all capital letters: “IDIOTS.”

A chief of staff to a Republican former governor of Virginia, Mr. Timmons now heads the National Association of Manufacturers, one of America’s largest business lobbying groups. His frustrations, which he detailed this week online and in a 30-minute interview, show the stark divide between the small-but-loud groups of protesters who are marching on state capitols to demand an immediate lifting of restrictions on economic activity and business leaders who have called for more gradual and careful steps toward reopening.

“These people are standing so close together without any protection — with children, for God’s sakes,” Mr. Timmons said in a video call.

“And they have no concern, and it’s all about them, and it’s all about what they want. And you know what? Every one of us wants it. Every one of us wants some sense of normalcy.

But I can tell you this: We’ll never have it if our manufacturing workers can’t do their jobs, if they can’t get that personal protective equipment manufactured, so that everybody has access to it to go back out into public.”
