This is a trying time for all of us no matter where you live.

Right now politics should be put aside. We all have government leaders at the Federal and State/Provincial levels telling us what we must do to get through this.

Adhere to the rules below regarding discussion that is political in nature or you will be warned and permanently removed from this series of threads. Considering we are relaxing forum rules regarding political discussion, what steps "over the line" is completely at the discretion of the moderation team. Examples of what constitutes appropriate discourse are listed below. When in doubt, don't post it. Do not wish harm or infection on members of the public, including the press, be it an individual or network/outlet/newspaper, etc.

It is becoming apparent that threadbans/infractions aren't enough for some people. The next step is a forum ban until hockey season starts.

***

We are going to follow similar rules for this thread that exist in the COVID-19 forum.

You may critique the response of government but don't make it political.

Posts attributing motives because it involves this or that political party/politician/ideology will not be tolerated.

Examples:

Allowed: "Trump doesn't know what he's doing, the response was too little too late"

Not Allowed: "The only reason the response was so slow was to keep the stock prices high so he can get reelected"

Allowed: "The media is over-reporting this and it's going to make things worse"

Not Allowed: "The liberal media is over-reporting this because they're trying to bring down Trump"

Miracle cures, home remedies, and medical advice should not be posted.

Re the Oxford report on 50% on UK population having contracted Covid

We don’t really know the true numbers though. When testing is more available and widespread, the mortality rate could drop quite a bit. That’s a best case scenario.

Coronavirus 'may have infected half of UK population', researchers say

Word of reason / caution on these types of reports. If you look at it purely from a statistical / probability perspective this simply isn't possible. Circa 60M people - equivalent to Italy, France, Spain x 1.2. Similar demographic in terms of age and underlying health conditions. If you simply look at the critical cases in each of these 4 countries it's just not possible for the UK to have 50% of the population infected with the current critical and terminal case count in the UK. Sure, it's more than the case count report, but it's just not realistic to think they have it at those levels and miraculously they are spared severe conditions.... Oxford people are pretty smart but this stinks of justifying testing to validate a hunch as opposed to a sound theory.

I am not saying the ultimate mortality rate will not drop to low single digits, but at this stage, it's a pretty nasty illness and it is taking people at 25-30 times the rate of the flu for what we know today.

"Our advice to customers is to take the precautions that they feel are the right ones for them," Carney said in response to a question about what people should do. Amazon has two specific suggestions that are worth it if you're concerned.
Wipe down packages with disinfectant.

The first suggestion is to wipe down packages with disinfectant. Most deliveries coming from Amazon have two pieces of packaging--the product packaging, and the shipping container. Realistically, you should probably just remove your product from the shipping package, and dispose of that box immediately.

Once you've done that, the surface of the inside package can be wiped down with a disinfectant wipe. Most products shipped by Amazon have likely been in a package for some time, meaning that the inside product probably isn't a super likely source of infection. Still, if you want to be extra careful, you can wipe that surface as well.

After you've disposed of the packaging, and wiped everything else down, wash your hands. Which, by the way, is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the virus anyway--meaning, you should be doing it anyway.

Leave them outside.

If that's not enough, another option is to leave the entire package outside, or, as Carney said, put it "in a remote location for a period of time." While it's not known exactly how long this particular virus can survive on cardboard packaging, in the long term it needs a host organism to survive and multiply. If it can survive on cardboard for only 24 hours, leaving it outside may kill it, allowing you to safely bring your package inside.

If you have a garage, you can simply place the entire box outside, and leave it a few days. Then, to be safe, you can wipe down the inside package as described above.

Here's How Amazon Says You Should Handle Packages to Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus

Today has sucked so much.

Why? It's just a passing moment. Come nighttime have a look outside at the Stars. That's 13 Billion plus years of the universe having seen it all and then some. Don't get down on things you can't control. :thumbu:

Tim Thompson who for many years did the video montages for Hockey Night In Canada on CBC has just uploaded this

Hockey Films by Tim Thompson

I've been really moved by all the beautiful, selfless acts of kindness and duty going on during this hard, unprecedented time. I wanted to pay tribute to the frontline workers everywhere, to those providing essentials, and to the artists whose work is giving hope, and helping our hearts, minds and souls get through this. If anyone knows who the musicians performing are, I'd love to know...they are from Italy, which is all I could find. But to them, thank you!! This is for everyone who's doing their part, and shining a light. And to my Mom for the inspiration to make it. Be safe. Be kind. Stay inside. #cleanhandsopenhearts

Freezers

You wouldn’t think a pandemic would be the time you’d start shopping for appliances, but plenty of people went in search of them this month. In particular, they wanted freezers — the better to stockpile food. Freezer searches climbed 440% this month compared with the first two weeks of February according to data by Slickdeals, an online coupon company that monitors e-commerce shopping traffic.
Bidets

When all the toilet paper sold out at grocery stores, shoppers began hunting for another solution: bidets. Searches for the bathroom fixture jumped 304% this month compared with the first two weeks of February according to Slickdeals. (The firm’s data also showed searches for toilet paper were still high — up 7,000%.) At New York-based bidet startup Tushy, “Sales have been up about [tenfold], which is pretty crazy,” CEO Jason Ojalvo told the "); background-size: 1px 1px; background-position: 0px calc(1em + 1px);">New York Post.
Weapons

In San Francisco, business was brisk at gun stores last week amid the state’s shelter-in-place order to stem the tide of new Covid-19 cases. And there are signs that sales of guns and ammo are "); background-size: 1px 1px; background-position: 0px calc(1em + 1px);">increasing nationwide. As one customer told the "); background-size: 1px 1px; background-position: 0px calc(1em + 1px);">San Francisco Chronicle, “If society is unraveling, it’s up to us to protect ourselves.”

House panel warns coronavirus could destroy Postal Service by June

“It has become clear that the Postal Service will not survive the summer without immediate help,” said Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

The U.S. Postal Service could be gone by June unless Congress immediately delivers billions of dollars to counteract the impact of the coronavirus crisis, a House committee chairwoman warned Monday night.

"Based on a number of briefings and warnings this week about a critical fall-off in mail across the country, it has become clear that the Postal Service will not survive the summer without immediate help from Congress and the White House," Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said in a statement.

I live in the city. We have no stars.

It was rough at work and home.

It is so hard not to be upset that my sister doesn’t get to have the graduation ceremony she deserves. She went through hell to get her PhD and to not see her walk across the stage is a tough pill to swallow.

Virus Knocks Thousands of Health Workers Out of Action in Europe

The thinning ranks of doctors and nurses, particularly in Spain, are hampering the ability to fight the epidemic, straining hospitals and raising fears that health workers are spreading the coronavirus.

MADRID — Across Western Europe, health care professionals have used the language of war to describe the struggle against the coronavirus, which has left some hospitals on the brink of collapse. And health care workers are the soldiers on the front lines.

Out of Spain’s 40,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, 5,400 — nearly 14 percent — are medical professionals, the health ministry said on Tuesday. No other country has reported health care staff accounting for a double-digit percentage of total infections.

But the problem is widespread throughout Europe. In Italy, France and Spain, more than 30 health care professionals have died of the coronavirus, and thousands of others have had to self-isolate.

In Brescia province, the center of Italy’s outbreak, 10 to 15 percent of doctors and nurses have been infected and put out of commission, according to a doctor there.

Dr. Fauci gives important advice: If you are leaving a city where the infection rate is increasing like crazy, PLEASE self-quarantine for 14 days so you don't get everyone around you sick and start a domino effect in the next city. Common sense really, but many don’t have it.

President Trump: "It sure would be nice to open the country on Easter, that would be a great day for it, but we are re-evaluating on a daily basis and we'll see how the next few weeks goes.
