NO NO, I don't want baseball in MTL. I lived through all this before. We had a team, every year rich teams like NY Y simply out bid every other team to get our best players. Sure we had a team but no chance to win a WS unless its once in 200 years. I went to games knowing we only had a 25% to win the game.. so less and less fans less and less tickets sold leading to howels about the system and then 3-4 years of PROMISES that a CAP and even playing field is about to happen, well NEVER DID and the expos went bye bye. NOW just to the math. this promise was how many years ago? STILL NOT DONE. lies lies and more lies. Fool me once not going to fool me twice.
NOT ONE DIME until a full level CAP on ALL TEAMS is locked in and running. NO MORE BULL SHIT PROMISE.

Hold off the exagerations there, cowpoke.

It took'em less than 30 years to build a highly competitive team. They were the most complete team in 94 and all was needed was a bigger set of balls to pull through and keep the core to build up finances later on. The stadium was getting its highest seasonal attendance, playoffs in 95 were a real possibility if they had kept the core intact, but the player strike snipped any balls right off, costing the expos more than any other team because of their precarious situation. Everything came to a tipping point at the same damn time and without the strike, I still wonder what would've truly happened.

But all of this has nothing to do with today. There's a strong base for baseball in Montreal, especially with the Habs waddling in mediocrity for molsinfinity.

The league operates a bit differently, although like others have stated, a cap is greatly needed. The GMA is entirely different than it was, with double the population. Different generations at different points in their lives. I know the corporate backing will still be a problem, the biggest one, but on the other hand, I'm pretty sure that a next-to-downtown location with that much of a bigger population will yield a lot more attendance than in the past and this could very well snowball into long-term viability.

I'm also pretty sure Bronfman would plan on using brand recognition and marketing to create associated ventures that are not baseball related but still use the Expos brand, I mean, just simply diversifying on the side to supplement the survival of the team and in the long-term, profit. There are so many dynamics involved, I just don't know about the viability.

Watching those old games, I get a bit of a kick out of seeing how much baseball has changed since the early 80's. The approach at the plate in particular is just night and day, with most of the guys back then having a very closed stance and holding their hands back, looking purely for contact and putting the bat on the ball. Nowadays 95% of the guys have an open stance and are swinging from as far back as physically possible, trying to pull the ball . It really shifted from contact to power.

And it didn't take 5 minutes between pitches either.

Yes, although Portland and Seattle are on good terms as cities, there is a fierce rivalry in MLS and the Winterhawks and the Thunderbirds in the Western league although they are from Kent, it is not that far, about 20 miles from Seattle. I am hoping that Seattle gets another NBA team so that can continue with the rivalry with the Trailblazers. The Sounders get lots of people in their home games, even by international standards.

There's too much money, and affluence in seattle for the nba not to come back. It's only a matter of time.

They should have never left in the first place.

I agree. There is a lot of wealth in Seattle and lots or rich people. Those people that started working for MS and had all the stock options and those that did were all millionaires 20 years layer in stocks.

I worked as a consult for Microsoft to create the new certification. It was then called something like MOS that stood for Miscrosoft Office Specialist. This was for the new Excel format that went from the 97 format *xls to the 2007 format with a million of rows (the old had about 65,656) *xlsx. I worked together with some software engineers, some other consultants and I spent 2 weeks in Seattle (it's about a 3 hour drive from Portland) they paids for everything. 2 weeks at a hotel near the MS campus, all food. Either get receipts and eat wherever you want or eat at their own cafeterias which had decent food, the employees have free soft drinks, nice coffee and we had all those amenities as well. The employees are allowed to play xbox games at work, This was in 2005 and they paid me $900 per day. so I made 9,000 (minus taxes that I had to pay myself since I had my own Excel consulting business called NW Excel Solutions) I also got gasoline money reimbursed. Best gig I have had in my life.

I think RDS is showing "Blue Monday" tonight.

Say it isn't so, Peate, say it isn't so :(

I just saw the nth repeat of El Perfecto yesterday and, I have to say, he seriously deserved that Perfect Game!

The umpire wasn't giving him that enlarged, generous strike zone like they did for Maddux and his 88 MPH fastball out of the batters' reach all the time. Martinez had plenty of full counts that he came out ahead from in that game.

Martinez had to make a great field on a bunt along the first line in the 7th inning to keep the drive for perfection alive.

Montreal's offense only had four hits with two points scored being unearned. There was no 7-0 lead to let Martinez take it easy on the mound.

In the eighth inning, El Presidente also spent plenty of time on the bases after an inning leading base hit, having to move up to third base along the way.

He also had the back-up catcher who called a great game!

Some regulars weren't in the lineup either with Owen in at shortstop, I believe.

Hell of a performance from the 37-YEAR-OLD pitcher!

It was, and Pedro's 9 perfect innings was pretty good too. It's a shame he lost it in the 10th.
