A few reasons. Quite often when we get control in our end our entire team leaves the zone and we end up turning it over at our blue line. Another thing we are bad for is when the opposing dman stands up at the blue line instead if getting the puck deep our forwards try to make a move at the offensive blue line and end up turning it over. Our dmen get caught pinching once in awhile too.
We don't turtle when we have a lead. We have some players that tend to turn the puck over when there is a lot of pressure. Sometimes I wish we did turtle. Just keep 5 guys back and ice the puck.

It was a rhetorical question. A team that's hunkering down on defense as part of their overall team philosophy should not be 2nd worst in the league in giving up odd man rushes.

Defense obviously isn't our strong point. Hopefully we tighten up in the playoffs.

I just noticed that this thread hasn't been dusted off since right before we won a Cup.
This thread was started during a phase of endless page-long stats discussions. We haven't had as many in recent years. But since they're back, it's appropriate to resurrect this thread. FWIW, it has been mentioned several times recently during this agonizing phase of charts and graphs.

I think it's interesting it's been dormant since the Cup run for a different reason. Almost as if the hyperfocus on minutia faded in significance once the Cup made the stat gazing moot, until a few years of disappointment turned penetrating eyes inward again...

Or maybe we've sucked since the Cup because we haven't fed the analytics gods lol..

But I think you do have a point there. That minute self-introspection doesn't happen when you've achieved your wildest dreams. It only happens when you feel as if there is something wrong with yourself. Or your team.

I think the dormancy is mostly related to the caps board keeping things simple with our barebones GDTs and the general thread for everything else.

the fancy stats and everything else always finds its way back to the general discussion. We have our ways around here

There's that, too. We have a good system, imo.

But if the Cup hadn't been won in 2018 I think there would be far more analysis in the following years, and the thread bump that happened today would've come much sooner.

Just coming here to say thanks to @twabby for the excellent posts and information that exhibit analytic information about the team. (Others who also provide analytic information are also thanked.)

I may not agree with conclusions brought by such, and this thread may not be on my regular reading group, but more information >>> less information. Always.
