I think they're in a real tough spot with Backes.

I can't imagine him being on the team next season. Not after how the playoffs finished with him in the pressbox.

I also can't imagine any team trading for him, sweetener or otherwise. Not after how the playoffs finished with him in the pressbox.

It's different than Marleau who can still contribute on the ice somewhat. Backes looks like a straight up scratch.

I don't know what they do.
I like don sweeney a lot but he was out to lunch on the backes signing. I’m surprised he made it to be honest- not like him

Agreed. The problem is compounded by Backes’s NTC, in which he can be dealt to only eight teams. What if Backes doesn’t waive that clause and none of those eight teams want him? I guess that either Boston carries him next season as the 13th forward or he better get used to riding the bus in the AHL.

Providence should be the move. Could see him retiring if the Bruins apply that pressure. Hes gotten plenty on chances and the Bruins have been more than accommodating. Time for him to move on

I think Backes has already given some comments that one can infer many things from. I suspect his NTC isn’t as big as an issue as finding a team who wants him it nothing will happen before that signing bonus (says my gut and nothing else). I do feel for the guy.

Assuming they can find a way to free up enough cap but can’t get JoJo, I do like Zuccarello. I know I’ll get flamed for liking an older player but maybe he’s a better cap fit.

Understatement of the year. He’s ours. Ain’t nobody’s takin him, son. Bury him in Providence and bring up one of Donnie’s long shot draft day specials. We have no money left.

Gives you more cap flexibility than if you bought him out now. Perhaps some of our capologists can show you a comparison in numbers.

If I did this right, you wait until 2020-2021 to buy Backes out and you will carry his contract on the books for 2 years.

2020-2021 = 4M Cap Hit = 2M Savings
2021-2022 = 1M Cap Hit = no savings

So I don't know... Is it really worth buying him out in the final year to get 2M in cap space? You prolong the deal and end up saving 1M at the end of it if I looked at this right. I don't understand anything when it comes to this kind of stuff. It just seems like buying him out would be pointless. @Dom - OHL would be able to explain it if he has the time. I could be 100% off base, and it makes sense to do it your way.

Trade danton for virtanen. Plug virtanen on 2nd line. Sign mojo . Install seny full time with mojo and coyle and let him finally develop. The kid will pop 20 with that speed alone. All problems solved. Yes no?

It is. He wouldn't solve the right shot issue, but he would solve everything else. He seems like a guy who will give you 25+ every year. He'd be a great fit with Krejci (which is where I'd put him).
As long as the player can play RW, I don’t really care if they’re a left shot. Mantha would be the sniper we’ve been missing, and the best RW Krejci has played with in years. If Mantha’s healthy next year, there’s a good chance he hits 30-30-60.

You are really rolling the dice that Virtanen hits his potential when he hasn't shown many signs so far into his career.

Otherwise this is a trade that gets you fired.

Jake is a RW and bigger than Heinen, but he only scored 25 points in 70 games in this, his best season.

Ottawa has $33M in cap space with basically no one of note to sign. Are any of the big name UFA's going to want to go there? It would be really tough to entice a division rival to take on the albatross of Backes contract and the cost to do so might be too much for the B's to swallow, but i think they are the best fit money wise.

Backes, Halak, a mid-level D-prospect and a 1st for Nilsson? Probably too much to move unless you KNOW you can re-up Mojo or get a suitable replacement
